| Thrice + Protest The Hero = I Win!
Here's the deal: I live in a city of 80,000 people called Nanaimo. It's on Vancouver Island, west of, you guessed it, Vancouver. The biggest thing to ever happen here as far as live music goes was when Gob played a concert here a few years back after nobody really cared about them anymore. Now, being that I live close to (and sometimes in) Vancouver, I ocassionaly get some big name/awesome acts to see. But this, this is unprecedented. On August 29, Nanaimo will host The Big Easy Music Festival and several pretty solid local bands will be playing. But here's the sweet part, Thrice and Protest the Hero are headlining. This is huge for my city. Huge. It's like Led Zeppelin playing in Antartica. Anyway, here's the list of the bands. Some of them I know, some of them you won't know (local bar bands) but some of them I've never heard of. Let me know which of these are any good (except the one's I know, that's just for gloating purposes). Oh yah, the whole festival costs $10. 10 Canadian dollars. So like 1 real dollar. So good. | 1 | Thrice
Oh this is so sweet. I've just started to get into them, I've only heard Vheissu and Alchemy Index, but those are both incredible. With a new album coming out, this should be just what I need to become a fanboy. Also, they have a six day rest before playing here, and don't have another show for a couple months after. So it should be super high energy. The Brand New/Thrice tour isn't coming my way so this is a welcome alternative. | 2 | Protest the Hero
I saw them in Vancouver about four months ago but they weren't great for a few reasons. They were only in Vancouver for the Junos (Canada's Grammys). They were nominated for "Best Rock Album." Fortress was nominated for "Best Rock Album." Can you believe that? I bet Nickelback or Simple Plan ended up winning. Anyway, they had flown in from Estonia the night before for the award show so they put this poorly planned show on. Their equipment got stuck in Estonia so they were using another bands' stuff and it sounded off. Also, the levels were really bad and I could hardly hear the guitars. Plus, no encore on account of jet lag. So esentially, this is their chance to make it right. | 3 | Rorschach
Not the metalcore band that will pop up if you look them up on this site. This is my favourite local band. They're so good and if they ever release anything besides a demo, I'll put it up here and review it. I've seen them lots but I'm always down for a Rorschach show. | 4 | Classified

Saw them when they opened for PTH in Vancouver. I don't know what their story is but they were great. | 7 | Current Swell

Decent local ska band. | 9 | Funk Vigilante

Local metal band. Some grind as well. Not a huge fan, I don't like much grind. | 16 | Christopher Arruda

There, that's the link to Nanaimo band Rorschach's myspace. The best songs on there are probably B.M.A. and Galaxy Destroyer but they're all great. This page doesn't do them justice though. | OllieS

08.02.09 | My user name, aids514, comes from that fact that my friends have been calling me "aids" (my name is Adrian, get it?) since like grade 8 and that my birthday is May 14 (514).
Terrible user name I know, but I don't know how to switch it. Oh well.
