| Top 10 Metal Albums Of 2008
This is a list of my opinion on the best metal albums of 2008. Don't expect gay albums like slipknot or the new in flames or death magnetic. | 1 | | The Faceless Planetary Duality
This album is simply breathtaking and is hands down album of the year. Amazingly technical, yet brutal and melodic at the same time. The greatest part of this album is the atmosphere it puts out. You feel like you should be suffocating in the deep reaches of space as you listen to this album, concluding with your head exploding. Recommended tracks: Planetary Duality 1 + 11, The Ancient Covenant, Xenochrist, Coldly Calculated Design. | 2 | | Cynic Traced In Air
It took Cynic 15 years, but the wait was well worth it. They have toned their sound down in this release, having drifted away from death metal influences to a more progressive metal/jazz fusion, but it works perfectly. Paul Masvidal has a voice unlike anything I have ever heard, and it is much more apparent in this release than in Focus. It is very soothing, yet powerful, and it is completely relaxing music. I feel like listening to this when there is not a cloud in the sky and it's a bright sunny day. Recommended tracks : The Space For This, Evolutionary Sleeper, The Unknown Guest, King Of Those Who Know. | 3 | | Meshuggah ObZen
ObZen is my favorite Meshuggah record. It is an extremely deep album, one that you have to understand the vocals to understand the full meaning, but I haven't even begun to understand it yet. And yet, it is still one of my favorite records of the year. Each song sounds the same at first, but we know there is more to these songs, that with each listen, they grow and we find something else. Recommended Tracks: ObZen, Dancers To A Discordant System, Pravus. | 4 | | Opeth Watershed
Opeth takes many many listens to completely appreciate their albums. Watershed is no exception. Opeth prove to be the masters of progressive death metal. While some, like me, are put down by longer track lengths, I let Opeth slide because each of their tracks are just beautiful. This album feels like it should be one, epic song, rather than seperated tracks. Still, I doubt they will ever top Blackwater Park. Recommended Tracks: Listen to the entire album in one sitting. | 5 | | Arsis We Are The Nightmare
I am a huge fan of this band, but my favorite record still has to be A Celebration of Guilt. Still, Arsis manages to put out one of the best of 2008. With their highly technical, progressive sound, they put on a melodic juggernaut album for the ages. With the band about to release Starve For The Devil in 2010, this bands future looks bright. Recommended Tracks: We Are The Nightmare, Servents To The Night, Shattering The Spell. | 6 | | Misery Signals Controller
Controller might just be one of my favorite metalcore releases of all time. It sounds completely different from all other metalcore releases as well as being as brutal and progressive as the best of them. Here's hoping their next album surpasses this one. Recommended Tracks: Labryinthian, Parallels, A Certain Death. | 7 | | Rotten Sound Cycles
Ahh, the best grindcore release of 2008. Next to Pig Destroyer, Rotten sound are my favorite grindcore band. Their song titles aren't too short, but not too long. Not to mention I like the cover art alot, don't really know why. Recommended Tracks: Caste System (IMO, the best track on the album), Alternews, Poor, Deceit. | 8 | | Scar Symmetry Holographic Universe
Scar Symmetry is my absolute favorite Melodic Death Metal band. Their albums are all pretty much equally good, except maybe the newest one. This album has the typical scar symmetry formula that works so well, crushing riffs, brutal screams, and amazing clean vocals. Recommended Tracks: Quantumleaper, Morphogenesis, Trapezoid, Holographic Universe. | 9 | | Veil Of Maya The Common Man's Collapse
Many people might not like this pick. They dismiss the band as generic deathcore. This certainly isnt the case. Veil Of Maya are progressive deathcore, and they are the best at what they do. I find their breakdowns to be absolutely devastating, in addition to their awesome guitar work inbetween the breakdowns. The lyrics are also pretty funny to read too. And I mean funny in a completely masochistic way. Recommended Tracks: Pillars, Mark The Lines, All Eyes Look Ahead, We Bow In It's Aura. | 10 | | Ihsahn AngL
I very recently got into this band but I am glad I did. I've been listening to Emperor for awhile now, and Im glad I have been. I personally like his solo work better, I dont know why. It's definitely more progressive, so thats probably why I guess. I wish I couldve listened to this album sooner, because it rocks. Recommended Tracks: Misanthrope, Scarab, Emancipation, Monolith. | |
