| Silence's Top 3
After reading cirq's list and seeing Dougie conform I thought "if Doug's cool enough to conform its pretty ignorant of me to think I'm not." So these are (probably) my top 3 favorite artists. | 1 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To
Basically every sound these guys have ever made has been like life changing and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven is the perfect examples. I think that everyone has that one classic album that can't be explained; this is mine. While GY!BE's other classic, F# A# , has a great concept that is made quite clear (the apocalypse) LYSFLATH has no theme to go one, except the climatic title of the album itself. Each song except the finale, Antennas To Heaven, contain just one word (Storm, Static, Sleep) and hold no massive and exploding build ups that could easily fit into the new apocalyptic horror movie spin-off, 28 Seconds Later. The samples range from a Market Mall broadcast to a old southern man singing about sticking his finger in a babies eye, and on paper this album would probably be considered a weird, boring mess. Instead every note, sample or even simple sound fit together in a heavenly fashion that I can only explain as the best album ever created. Do yourself a favor and listen to the record through at least once and if by the last 8 minutes of Antennas To Heaven you aren't in awe then you just weren't listening. | 2 | | Matthew Good Vancouver
Whether it is with his band or his solo act, Good has proved himself to me a musical and lyrical genious. With his solo project he has released one excellent record, two near classics and one incredible, mindblowing classic. Vancouver, to me, is not just a recorded political statement, nor is just a great record by a great artist; what it is, is one the few records that have such a deep impact on me, not just in my own music but in my everyday life. It is the kind of record that reminds me of the kind of relevant art that can be made by a passionate songwriter, even one who has been around for over a decade and has been through so much desolation. Solely produced by Matthew Good, he combines the grandiose sound of the fan favourite, Avalanche, with the intimacy of heartbreaking, Hospital Music, creating a soundtrack that is not only politically savvy and intelligent but also devastating and desperate. With Vancouver, Good doesn?t simply make his other work irrelevant but instead, effortlessly, combines all the paramount attributes to make not just the record of the year, but his magnum opus. | 3 | | Mono / Worlds End Girlfriend Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain
Mono is so consistent it should be a illegal. Since they released one of the best debuts I've ever heard, Under The Pipal Tree, Mono has proved themselves to be one of the best instrumental post rock bands out then and since GY!BE went down, the best. It was hard to choose between putting Sigur Ros or Mono on this list but yesterday I was walking across town to do sound for this youth group and there was a snow storm, and I put on Silent Flight, Sleeping Dawn then Pure As Snow and it was one of the most amazing experiences in recent memory. Of course I was high as eff but it was like I was watching myself, so amazing. So what was even harder was which Mono record to put one this list because everything they have put out has been incredible. From the extremely dark and beautiful One Step More You Die, or the majestic minimalist masterpiece Your Are There, or the cinematic classic, and album of the year, Hymn to the Immortal Wind. Hell even probably their worst record Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky has some of their best moments. But I had to pick their split w/ Worlds End Girlfriend and here's why. The atmosphere is fragile, slow moving and subtle, only ever breaking out of its solacing dreariness twice, once in the middle and as it builds up towards the end. Like a story the record plays, being divided into five tracks which are more like chapters each keeping the same pace; track one creating an atmosphere, track two building only slightly from the first while track three comes to swell and break the silence, shattering the hope and gentleness set by the first two into a sense of depression and lose. Track four is accompanied by a distant and haunting voice with a slight sway to pick up the pieces of the devastation that has been brought by the third track and act as a bridge to one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, the last track and the delicate and restrained yet glorious climax. Some consider this to be a dark and depressive piece and I disagree, this is a record of hope, a record showing a light in the dark, if you will. Mono and World?s End Girlfriend hone one of the most underrated attributes in music, restraint, and produce one of the beautiful soundtracks that I have had the privilege of hearing. | |
