Writing About Boredom
Trying to write a story about boredom that doesn't end up being Madame Bovary, because afterall I am perpetually bored. Thinking of incorporating some sort of musical journey, Cam's blog got me thinking. Anyhoo, here's 20 songs that are essential to my being. Fads come and go, but these will last forever in my heart. You could say that these are my 20 favourite songs of all time, but that's too temporary. |
20 | Max Richter On the Nature of Daylight
Oh to lament the ones left off. So many, and yet I feel this is definitive. |

18 | Neutral Milk Hotel Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 |
17 | Eric Whitacre Sleep |
16 | Elton John Curtains |
15 | Frederic Chopin Raindrops Prelude |
14 | Edward Elgar Enigma Variations |
13 | Radiohead The National Anthem |

5 | Queen Bohemian Rhapsody
Temporary Titles: Velvet Waltz, Until Sunshine Scorch the Last Pine Needle, Bronze Statues, Are Running at Roads of Eternity, idk yet, other stuff. |
4 | Dave Holland What Goes Around
Big Band turned upside down. Play count the melodies interacting and you'll lose your mind, 11/4 basslines running for 18 minutes. Trombone solo with triad chords. Yep. |
3 | Built to Spill Velvet Waltz
So far my novel is about a small town where one families kid accidently kills another one of the same age. At first it seems like the two fathers dealing with it, but then the one father kills the other because he snaps and the rest is about the two older siblings dealing with that crazy shit in high school, in a really dull, boring town. This is a perfect song as a study in how to create tension and release to awe-striking effect. |
2 | Kayo Dot The Manifold Curiosity
Best 14 minutes of music ever made? Arguably |
1 | Do Make Say Think Fredericia
Like a conversation turning into an argument and slowly boiling over into violence. |
