Oceanus 04.22.10	Fair enough. Personally, I think there's more to it than that: something has to be more than mere entertainment if you can't imagine life without it. Most of the time, instead of actual, tangible thoughts, I'll have music looping in my head. Sometimes it is music that exists, and sometimes it isn't. Also, some of my most actualizing, 'real' moments in life have been in a musical setting. I suppose that's how it is with any passion, really. But there has to be a reason why so many people are passionate for it other than just to provide and receive entertainment, why so many people dedicate their entire lives to it. Music, in my mind, is just as effective a mode of communication as language or other mediums. And to nit-pick, it can't be fair to call anything 'just entertainment'. There are reasons why people are entertained by it, after all. The most concise perhaps being that they can relate to it. But why do we have the capacity to relate to it in the first place? Isn't it just a collection of pitches and rhythms? Meh.

fatlip27 04.23.10	Oceanus, I couldn't have said it better myself. The "It's just entertainment" argument is a major disappointed coming from anybody from this website. It's the equivalent when I ask my female friends as to why they like mainstream Top 40 songs and they respond by saying "It's just something to dance to." Really? You dance to "Hit that bitch with a baseball bat," "Come on rude boy can you get it up?" "Check out my lady lumps... in the back and in the front," and "My neck, my back, lick my pussy and my crack?" And these women get offended when I call them out on it and then they give me, "Well, I don't even listen to the lyrics, I only enjoy the beat." Fine, whatever.... ... but to get that same answer in this website--nevermind that this website is probably 90% 12-18 year-old males who probably think they have all the answers at such a young age, pretend they're smarter than everybody else, or minimize other people's opinions that are different from their own by questioning that other person's intelligence (no, I'm not talking about that)--who have 18 year-old kids parading the works of artists such as Jeff Buckley, My Bloody Valentine, Godspeed you black emperor and swear that it's the greatest music ever created and when someone legitimately asks for a more elaborated opinion, we get "Testicles.... that is all." Am I really expecting too much from this website? Maybe that's my problem, but I was looking forward to reading a spirited discussion about music. Nevermind, I should be sleeping anyway....
Oceanus 04.27.10	Sniper: Do it. :) Fatty: I know what you mean, but I also respect that music means different things to different people, whether it's just "something to dance to" or "the epitome of all meaning to existence" or something in between. And this is also the internet, where people say things for the 'lulz' regardless of how they feel. I am glad that there are artists such as My Bloody Valentine and whoever else you mentioned, independently of my personal opinion on their music, because they have to be doing something right to even get an album produced (for one) and because at least people who listen to them are listening to something. I know that ten years ago the music I was listening to was nothing like my preferences now (although it is always fun to revisit for nostalgia and all), and that growth is both to be expected and embraced. The fact that you even dislike the music you mentioned (presumably) is just illustrating that music is fundamentally disparate enough to be suitable for all peoples and ages.
