| Fantasy Football Draft
Had my fantasy football draft yesterday. Kinda weird considering I had to do it over a webcam because everyone's over a thousand miles away from me. Here are my picks and explantations of why I picked these guys. | 1 | Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville
Usually I like to stray away from smaller backs knowing that they have a higher risk for injury, but MJD was just too good to pass up. He's a fantasy beast, scoring an average of 15.9 per game. | 2 | Brandon Marshall, WR, Miami
Not exactly a fantasy player to build around, but with the predictions for this year and what I believe will be the coming out party for Chad Henne, Marshall could become the steal of this year's draft. | 3 | Miles Austin, WR, Dallas
Showed great promise last year with an average score of 12.1, but I believe he will really break out this year with rookie Dez Bryant on the other side of the field. | 4 | Phillip Rivers, QB, San Diego
I didn't want to pick a QB this early, but I had to considering my league started grabbing all of my QB picks early, and Phillip was the last on my list of 3. Averaged 16.1 points per game last year, so he's no slouch. I do feel, though, that the loss of Vincent Jackson early in the season could become a problem for my roster. | 5 | Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans
At the time he was the best player available, so I scooped him up on hopes that he will improve on his sub- par 9.4 per game from last year. Has the potential to be a monster, but only time will tell. | 6 | Thomas Jones, RB, Kansas City
Again it was a situtation of who's the best player available, and I grabbed Thomas Jones. If he can look anything like he did last year with the Jets, this could be a real bonus on my roster. That line in KC is terrible though, so I might put him on the trading block pretty early on in the season. | 7 | Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay
With Aaron Rodgers as the Pack's QB, Finley can be a real problem for opposing defenses. His score of 5.6 was pretty average for tight ends last year, but the two I wanted most(Witten, Gates) were swiped off the bored before I had a chance, so I went with Plan C. | 8 | Packers D/ST
Again, not my first choice(Eagles or Jets), but still a solid defense. I'm hoping they can improve on their turnover ratio, which will then improve on their 9.5 season average for last year. | 9 | Stephen Gostkowski, K, New England
Has a pretty good leg and has been solid since Vinatieri left for the Colts, so this might be a pretty good pick up. People don't realize that kickers can win or lose a week for you, and a 9.4 average from last year shows that Gostkowski has the potential to do that. | 10 | Santana Moss, WR, Washington | 11 | Antonio Bryant, WR, Cincinnatti | 12 | Cadillac Williams, RB, Tampa Bay | 13 | Chad Henne, QB, Miami | 14 | Texans D/ST | 15 | Marshawn Lynch, RB, Buffalo | 16 | Jon Carlson, TE, Seattle | |

07.27.10 | I've got to really watch my bye weeks, because I had no choice but to pick some guys who have the same bye weeks. I'm going to do some trading and finagling before the season starts in hopes of picking up some more bench help, but overall I think I have a pretty solid team. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Plus, I had my hand forced numerous times yesterday. | BigHans
07.27.10 | Either this is a small league or you are drafting with morons. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | It's a small league(only 10). It's me and 2 of my good friends and a bunch of new people whom we had to invite in. Apparently, 4 out of the 7 people we invited in have never been serious about fantasy football. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | And I hope you're not including me in the "morons" label, Hans. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Fine, I guess not one American on this site enjoys football. | BigHans
07.27.10 | No, I was saying you have a good team. Your first 4 picks mean you drafted with idiots. | Apollo
07.27.10 | I thoroughly enjoy watching football. I just don't fully understand the concept of the fantasy football league thing. My dad always tried to get me into football when I was younger and I never liked it, but the last few years living on my own I love watching it. Considering getting cable so I can watch this upcoming season. | BigHans
07.27.10 | And there aren't alot of football fans on this site I've noticed. Are you surprised with the amount of scenesters here? | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Dude, I was so upset when they started grabbing QB's so early. My friend Key and I kept looking at each other like WTF is going on?!?! It was ridiculous! I've never, ever drafter QB earlier than th 7th round | BigHans
07.27.10 | QBs are usually the highest scorers in the leagues I play in, so having one of the top 5 is key. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | QB's are middle of the road in the league I play in. You always want to grab top tier receivers and back with your first 4 or 5 picks, and then go grab everything else. | BigHans
07.27.10 | Rivers went a long way towards carrying me to a title last year. The days of RBs dominating FF are pretty much over. | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Panthers | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Not in my league, but we will see. But ya, I thought Rivers was a great pick up. The guy is a fantasy owner's dream when it comes to QB's, but I'd prefer to have Brees or Manning over him.
Dale Doback: I manage a baseball team.
Nancy Huff: Oh, little league?
Dale Doback: Fantasy league | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Panthers suck. No QB, Steve Smith's already on the down slope, and you don't have a line to block for that once-great running back tandem.
I will restate it: Panthers suck. | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Panthers | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Suck | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Not | BigHans
07.27.10 | The Panthers will be better than last year, but they wont be going anywhere beyond the wild card if they can get there. | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Superbowl
Panthers | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | No, the Super Bowl will be(leaving my bias aside) Colts vs. Cowboys.
Prediction: Cowboys 27, Colts 17
| BigHans
07.27.10 | The Cowboys have the best talent in the league but wont make it for two reasons:
1. Romo is a fucking choke artist
2. Phillips cannot discipline a team into not playing sloppy, mistake ridden football. | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Saints vs Panthers
complete and total bias | BigHans
07.27.10 | too bad theyre both in the NFC Brandon. Go back to being a dork who knows little about sports. | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Too bad you can't realize sarcasm when it punches you in the pixels | Inveigh
07.27.10 | my draft's not for another two weeks, but it's a ridiculous tilt towards QB play (you can start two, average QB gets 19.8 points per week, whereas the average RB gets only 13.8). The dude who set it up made it 20 passing yards and 20 rushing yards are 1 point, rather than having it at 10 rushing yards (which is totally unfair) and also made passing TDs, rushing TDs and receiving TDs all the same (also unfair).
The reason I say unfair is because it's a keeper league that I joined last year, and my starting QBs were Brady Quinn and Jake Delhomme, where as the guy who makes the rules has had Brady and Brees for 4 years. LOL at least there's not money on it. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I think Romo's moved beyond the "choke artist" label(this will be the year he does it, and if he can't do it, he never will). I also think they will rise above the Phillip's Factor and do this year what they have been saying they would have done the past couple of years. | Maniac!
07.27.10 | Have I pissed you guys off yet?
*tries harder* | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | 20 yards for 1 point? That's ridiculous! Passing, rushing, and receiving TD's should all be different point totals. Ugh, ridiculous.
We start one QB, 3 backs, 3 receivers, a tight end, a defense, and a kicker. QB's tend to be the lowest scoring skill position(minus tight end), while backs and wide outs tend to win you games. | BigHans
07.27.10 | I'll buy Romo not being a choke artist when I see it. The guy crumbles under pressure like a whore in church. | BallsToTheWall
07.27.10 | sup Pit. | Zoo
07.27.10 | I usually never take a kicker until the very last round. Having a top flight K is always nice, but I don't buy into the statement that they can win or lose a week for you more than a QB, RB, or WR. The fantasy point gap between the #1 K (Kaeding) and the #10 K (Reed) was just 30 points but for the QB's it was 108, RB's: 149, and WR's: 42.
I like the receivers obviously but you have some serious depth problems at RB. If MJD ever gets injured, you could be in trouble. Since Cadillac is actually starting, it'll be more beneficial to start him instead of Jones since he'll probably on see 8-10 touches a game (although some will be goal line carries) with Charles carrying most of the load. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I don't know, Hans. I think the playoff win last year sparked him(of course he didn't have any O-Line help against Minny), and I think the edition of Dez Bryant will be a HUMONGOUS bonus for him. Plus, Felix Jones will become the premier back for the Cowboys, making it easier on Romo to pass because they won't be able to play off the line anymore.
Sup Balls? You see the Miami love in my draft? | Inveigh
07.27.10 | In my mind, you should start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Def and maybe 1 flex
25 passing yards = 1 pt
10 rushing yards = 1 pt
10 receiving yards = 1 pt
Passing TD = 4 pts
Rushing TD = 6 pts
Receiving TD = 6 pts
Fumble = -1 pt
fumble lost = -2 pts
return TD = 6 pts | BigHans
07.27.10 | I know Nick but regardless of what Romo has around him it all comes down to his moxie, which I dont believe he has. Sure the o-line was cracking against Minny, but Romo pretty much went into the fetal position and died, jsut like he did in the second half of the 08 NFC title game against NYG. He was clearly, and I mean clearly skittish. The greats say FUCK YOU to the blitz. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Zoo- I don't think Charles will start over Jones, but we'll see. Yeah, I do have serious depth problems at back though. I'm going to try and make a trade for a Marion Barber(his red zone percentage is off the charts, making him a big time scorer in my league) or another goal line bruiser. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Hans, shit, if I had Jared Allen and his 350 lb buddies coming after me unblocked, I'd curl up into a fetal position too. And yes, the greats do say fuck you to the blitz, but do you know what helps them become one of the greats? An O-Line that protects them and doesn't crumple when Jared Allen decides to rage. Aikman was like Romo before he got his O-Line, and look what he turned into. | BigHans
07.27.10 | I just dont trust Romo. He has the nerves of a fucking field mouse.
Remember the 06 playoffs? Seattle? He fucking choked there too.
How about the 08 season finale against Philly, to decide who would go to the playoffs, and they got blown out by 40. I'm telling you, he lacks the balls the true great QBs do. Heres hoping he proves me wrong.
And for the record, there are much worse lines than the Cowboys. | Inveigh
07.27.10 | "And for the record, there are much worse lines than the Cowboys."
yep, like the Bears. Jay Cutler is a bonehead at times, but I don't question his toughness or testicular fortitude. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Cutler's a different animal all together though. He stands in there, gets hit, and throws a pick at the same time, while Romo stands and scrambles, gets hit, and either takes the sack or fumbles.
Ugh, the Boys. DAMN YOU!! | alachlahol
07.27.10 | this is a site for music-based discussion. why are you surprised over the lack of interest in football? go to the forums or espn.com if you want a more fervent sports interest (espn will give you more activity) | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Thanks alachlahol. I didn't know ESPN existed! What's ESPN?!?! | BallsToTheWall
07.27.10 | Yeah. I cant wait for my drafts. Sputnik needs another league. | Inveigh
07.27.10 | lol | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Is ESPN that thing where you can read people's minds? Or is it bulimia? | Inveigh
07.27.10 | that's called HPV, but I hear it gives you warts | Xplisit
07.27.10 | my draft is this weekenddd | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | So reading one's mind gives you warts? That explains why my hands look like tree branches!!!
| Inveigh
07.27.10 | does your dick look like a character from Lord of the Rings? | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Yes, but with dreadlocks | Inveigh
07.27.10 | yep, you've been mind-reading alright | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I watched the Dinner for Schmuck's bootleg last night. FUCKING HILARIOUS! | Inveigh
07.27.10 | it looks pretty funny... Hot Tub Time Machine was terrible.
anyone see Brooklyn's Finest? I've got it rented but haven't had a chance to watch it yet | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Brooklyn's Finest is pretty damn good, albeit a bit formulaic.
You didn't like Hot Tub Time Machine? I'm not saying it was a great movie by any means, but it still brought out a few good chuckles. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I dunno, Alachlahol. This thread has 55 comments, so I'm guessing you feel like a fool now.
Oh, wait, 43 of those comments are mine. FUCK! | Inveigh
07.27.10 | I guess there were a couple funny parts, but I think I was just expecting more because a few people I knew said it was really funny. Maybe "terrible" was too strong of a word. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I'm not saying it was a great movie, but it definitely wasn't terrible, not even bad. It was okay, more stupid than anything else, but it still made me laugh. Rob Courddry seems to be the only highlight of anything he's in. | Inveigh
07.27.10 | yeah the part where he had to suck Craig Robinson's dick was pretty funny. I also watched Broken Lizard's new movie, Slammin' Salmon or whatever -- it was on Comedy Central. Pretty standard fare from those guys, but not as bad as Club Dred. | illmitch
07.27.10 | dunno when my fraternitys fantasy football league will start but i think im gonna give it a go this year | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | As a guy who used to dream about being involved in pro sports one way or another, Fantasy Football is as close to the real thing as I am going to get. Personally, I think I could be a GM for a pro football or baseball team, but again, that might be stretching it a bit. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Just pulled off my first trade. Gav up Marshawn Lynch and Jon Carlson for Marion Barber. | BigHans
07.27.10 | Wow, nice haul. Only a moron accepts the 2 quarters for a dollar trade. So you managed to get Barber for a third string RB and a role player? Nice. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | Well, he needed a tight end since there are serious doubts about Owen Daniels playing much this year, so Carlson was a good pickup for him. However, grabbing Marion Barber for those two really is a steal. | BigHans
07.27.10 | The best way to really sucker noobs is to offer them the 3 quarters and a dime for a dollar trade.
4 for 1! What a deal! | Inveigh
07.27.10 | Marion Barber is one of my 4 keepers from that shit team I inherited last year. QBs are what you need, but since I ended the year with Bulger and Matt Moore, I chose to keep Barber, Calvin Johnson, Ryan Longwell and the Jets defense lol | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I wanted that Jets D so bad, as much as it would pain me to have 'em.
J-E-T-S SUCK SUCK SUCK! | Inveigh
07.27.10 | I had it in both of my leagues last year, in one I had the Jets and the Colts (which was surprisingly awesome due to sacks and ints) and in the other I had Jets and Giants. | BigHans
07.27.10 | I remember fondly having the 06 Bears D in fantasy. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I just wanted Barber because I know he can be good as a starter in a pinch. The Cowboys are saying they'll use him more in goal-line and short yardage situations rather than him being a full-time back, so he'll rack up the fantasy points in first downs and touchdowns. | BigHans
07.27.10 | He'll get plenty of touches once Felix inevitably gets hurt. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | For a Cowboy's fan, Hans, you're awfully pessimistic. Usually we are a bit too optimistic. | Inveigh
07.27.10 | it's those lonely Minnesnowta winters man | BigHans
07.27.10 | Pit, I know the flaws in the team, and they are glaring. Yes, I am a pessimist. Probably due to the fact Dallas has won exactly one playoff game in the last 14 years. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I've been a lifelong cowboys fan(not more than the Dolphins, though), and I've been disappointed year in, year out since 1996. However, I think this is the best team that we've had since then, despite Coach Cupcake. If they can overcome Cupcake's shortcomings and Romo can continue to build the confidence from last year, this could be a pretty damn good team. Plus, Miles Austin's a beast, Felix Jones, when healthy, is a speed demon, Dez Bryant's my candidate for rookie of the year(was before he was drafted), and the defense should be much more solid. Plus, Ware's completely healthy, and has been pushing harder than ever to become a beast of a pass rusher he was supposed to be. | BigHans
07.27.10 | I hear what you're saying Nick but you are glossing over the flaws of the team. Talent is not the problem, and hasn't been for about 4 years. On paper, they are arguably the most loaded team in the league.
The problems, which I do not see being fixed any time soon, are what you alrady mentioned. IF they can overcome Coach Cupcake. Well, what if they cant? What if Romo gets the deer in headlights face again in crunch time?
Great teams are solid, consistant, and play with heart. The Cowboys, with the exception of a few very noteworthy players, are not this as a whole. That has been their downfall, and unless Phillips suddenly turns into Parcells, it will be again. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | "IF they can overcome Coach Cupcake. Well, what if they cant? What if Romo gets the deer in headlights face again in crunch time?"
What if they can? What if Romo all of a sudden becomes the monster he's shown he can be?
| BigHans
07.27.10 | Well if they can I will be happily wrong and will probably fap right in front of the TV if it happens. | LaCosaNostra13
07.27.10 | I'd go gay just to see the Dolphins or the Cowboys in the Super Bowl. I'd bend over and take it right up the ass!
Too much? | BigHans
07.27.10 | Maybe just a bit Nick. I mean, they HAVE won 3 titles in our lifetime. | Sowing
07.27.10 | pretty good team bro.
best picks: MJD is a beast, Austin is primed to have another great season, Rivers is always amazing, Colston in that saints O will continue to produce, Cadillac in the 12th is a steal considering how he came back from injury down the stretch last year
worst picks: marshall is good, but in the 2nd round? t. jones is wayy on the downside of his career and wont be a starter in KC | LaCosaNostra13
07.28.10 | To be honest, Marshall was the 10th best rated player by ESPN and was the best available at the time. I agree with the rating, and I think he's poised to really turn it on, because Henne is the perfect QB for a big receiver like that. It all depends on what henne does, though.
Thomas Jones was a risk, I agree, however he was the best player available in the draft. I needed another starting RB, and he was right there, so I scooped him up. |
