09.23.10 | ^ That's my issue right now. And I'm not "relying" on my influences, but like it or not it's impossible to write something completely devoid of -any- influences. It just happens that my main influences for writing are albums that have been crucial to my musical development in some way, and albums and songs I can go back to time and again because they're just good. They aren't all great, but every one I've listed has at least one major element that influences my style of songwriting.
And honestly, just playing what sounds good without paying attention to what you're writing leads to a million bands playing their influences and sounding exactly the same, because it sounded good when they wrote it. You have to step back and write from a more cerebral standpoint as well. Especially when a goal of the project is to unify disparate styles. |
