11.12.10 | Not really..... |
FrostbiteOblivion
11.12.10 | I have yet heard a Punk album that I would consider essential to anything. |
ShadowRemains
11.12.10 | you have Henry Rollins as your profile pic, but the list doesn't have Black Flag... |

11.12.10 | touche |
ShadowRemains
11.12.10 | lol wow frostbite |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | Not sure that I agree 10 is "essential" but I love the list. |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | None of this essential..... at all. |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | "oh and frostbite, how ya gonna have a whopping 74% of yo pie chart dedicated to punk-influenced genres of music (metalcore, post-hxc, hxc) and say that like holy shit wut"
He ain't the sharpest tool in the shed, Hep. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | essential to life, no. Essential to a younger person getting into punk... I disagree sir. |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | Not even that. There are much better punk albums to introduce to someone who's never really listened to the genre. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | For example? |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | lol |
porch
11.12.10 | sputnik has awful taste in punk and it doesn't help that new users are constantly recommended mediocre bands
not including present company in this however |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | Better not be including me, Porch.
I'll give you at least 3 accessible punk bands that will help any newbie to the genre: The Replacements, Bad Religion, and Social Distortion. |
BigHans
11.12.10 | needs moar Latterman |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | How are NOFX, Pennywise, Lagwagon and Rancid not hand and hand with Bad Religion. I agree with your three but these are west cost punk bands that sprang either with or from Bad Religion. Arbitrarily dismissing them is what is confusing me. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | Would someone please put Latterman in a list for BigHans |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | Dude, you're still ignoring the "essential" in the title, huh? |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | "How are NOFX, Pennywise, Lagwagon and Rancid not hand and hand with Bad Religion."
Also, be careful with a statement like that. Ignorance in a genre like this will only get you killed. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | So his essentials need to be your essentials? I mean I don't see Sex Pistols and Ramones in there
either. Someone would think that essential but I'm not going to dismiss an entire list of good punk
bands because he didn't put a couple I think should be there on.
Publicly verbally (in text) flogged perhaps but not killed I assure you. |
Eskate87
11.12.10 | i suppose i should have clarified. this list is just a sample of some punk that ive been digging lately and also happen to be some of the albums i grew up listening to. |
Eskate87
11.12.10 | ^well said omni |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | "So his essentials need to be your essentials? I mean I don't see Sex Pistols and Ramones in there either. Someone would think that essential but I'm not going to dismiss an entire list of good punk bands because he didn't put a couple I think should be there on."
Dude, essential means something that helps revolutionize the genre, not just some albums he likes. Keep it up, though, because you're good for a laugh. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | They did for me and I would guess for Eskate87 as well but I digress because the higher power of
awhiteguy doesn't agree. My bad dude ;^) |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | "i suppose i should have clarified. this list is just a sample of some punk that ive been digging lately and also happen to be some of the albums i grew up listening to"
See, that's fine. What you like is definitely not "essential" for anyone to have, though. If you want essential punk, you gotta go with:
The Ramones
Social D
Fear
Dead Kennedys
Bad Religion
Stuff like that. Also, omnipanzer, here's a definition of essential, because I think you're struggling with proper word usage:
Essential:
1. Something fundamental.
2. Something necessary or indispensable.
|
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | It's not the higher power, it's a word with a specific definition, and by the definition, none of these releases are essential. |
WeepingBanana
11.12.10 | wait.. someone else knows hi-standard... AWESOME! |
Eskate87
11.12.10 | Hi-Standard rules |
Masochist
11.12.10 | Agree with awhiteguy - none of these are essential. Also agree with omnipanzer - good list. Nice with the Millencolin and Pulley.
You ought to check these out:
Bad Religion - 'Against The Grain' or 'Suffer' or 'The Empire Strikes First'
Bouncing Souls - 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation'
Hot Water Music - 'Caution' or 'Fuel For The Hate Game'
Ten Foot Pole - 'Unleashed' (from whence was borne Pulley) |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | The list is pretty damn good. I don't have a problem with the list itself, just the title saying essential and then putting bands like NOFX and Lagwagon on it |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | Allow me to elaborate:
One simply cannot determine what was essential to the growth of someone elses musical background or
what they consider essential to pass on.
I believe he is within the boundaries of the definition.
I have no problem agreeing to disagree ;^)
I like your list masochist I own all of them and stand by them as well. correction I don't have ten
foot pole.
I would add Generator. |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | I'm not determining what's essential, dude, history is. So let's put it this way:
I need air to breathe, so that makes air essential right? But what if I don't like air, and I want to breathe something else? Does that make air non-essential than to me, just because I don't like it? |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | If your daddy never loved you you would be a different person or vice versa. That experience was "Essential" to who you are as a person weather you were even aware of it or not. are these essential to where music is today... by definition yes they are. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | Sorry, you need to broaden your scope. |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | indeed :^)
But I did need to pass an hour so thank you for that.
It was enjoyable. |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | Nevermind, I give up. You're a fucking idiot. I'll leave you with one last lesson, though:
When someone says "Some Essential Punk," it means essential to the genre, not themselves(unless clarification is added, which it was later). |
omnipanzer
11.12.10 | love you dude! |
awhiteguy
11.12.10 | Also, by your "reasoning," if I liked Brokencyde, I could say they were essential as well.
Get off the internet, omni. People like you shouldn't be allowed out of their cages. |
Eskate87
11.12.10 | soo...about God existing or not....thoughts? |
omnipanzer
11.13.10 | @awhiteguy: ok lets do this for the slow people (you). According to your logic Tom Petty isn't "essential" because of his friend and mentor Bob Dylan who isn't essential because of his friend and mentor Woody Gutherie?
Now take a deep breath and rest your engorged e-peen for a moment.
"Essential:
1. Something fundamental.
2. Something necessary or indispensable."
Here is where you go wrong... Fundamental, Necessary or Indispensable to whom or what you dope?
Take a deep breath neckbeard it really isn't that important but randomly cussing and getting crappy when you are wrong will just get you stomped bro. ;^) |
pizzamachine
11.13.10 | "soo...about God existing or not....thoughts?"
God luvs yoooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!! |

11.13.10 | I stay away from religion... it's too controversial. |

11.13.10 | Oh come on everyone needs to believe something. |

11.13.10 | I believe in a magical world where pizzamachines exist in every home. |
awhiteguy
11.13.10 | "Here is where you go wrong... Fundamental, Necessary or Indispensable to whom or what you dope?"
Dude, none of these add to the sound of punk. How are you not getting this? They didn't expand or anything on the sound of the genre, they just piggy-backed on the sound that was created by another artist that came years before. So let's see. If it weren't for the bands that these artists piggy-backed on(not a knock on the quality of the music, just fact), than thebands on this list would have never existed. So now, explain to me how these are essential to any punk fan's catalog when they didn't invent, create, or do anything different than what's been done before? |
pizzamachine
11.13.10 | @ omnipanzer: Awesome. |
Satellite
11.13.10 | list honestly isn't that bad, guys. better than a OMG OPETH RANKED list. |
omnipanzer
11.13.10 | Any band that has influenced becomes essential. I guaran-damn-tee you that at least half of those groups have influenced some modern bands. Making them essential to someone. Can't have one w/o the other. |
omnipanzer
11.13.10 | @sat I agree |
awhiteguy
11.13.10 | "Any band that has influenced becomes essential. I guaran-damn-tee you that at least half of those groups have influenced some modern bands. Making them essential to someone. Can't have one w/o the other."
Who says these bands influenced anyone?
Satty, I never said the list was bad, I just said these releases aren't essential. Somebody, not going to say any names *cough omnipanzer cough*, doesn't understand the definition of "essential." |
Satellite
11.13.10 | i only read like the first 10 comments and assumed the whole list was the op getting shat on.
lo siento señor pit. |
awhiteguy
11.13.10 | It is all good, mi amigo. |
omnipanzer
11.13.10 | Wrong... your use of the definition is incorrect.
initial statement I politely disagreed with "None of this [is] essential..... at all."
That statement is patently false on all levels.
It isn't even defend-able but captain chuckles insists on defending it because he doesn't agree with the list.
You have every right to your opinion and I have every right to mine.
I also have a right to point out when you are factually wrong.
Now had the statement been "I feel that None of this [is] essential..... at all." there never would have been an issue.
In other words I am being the same level of douche that you are except in favor of the list and Eskate87's right to call it what ever the hell he likes. |
Masochist
11.13.10 | "In other words I am being the same level of douche that you are except in favor of the list and Eskate87's right to call it what ever the hell he likes."

11.13.10 | hey, it's your community I'm just looking to settle in. |

11.13.10 | Oh, and I would like to post an official apology to Eskate87 for hijacking his post... sorry dude. |
feav233
11.13.10 | these are not essential, wtf dude |
tom79
11.13.10 | the words 'essential' and 'millencolin, 'pennywise', and 'anti flag' should not be on the same the list together |
musicConsumer
