| Boss Bass Riffs
Saw an article today that listed the 50 greatest guitar riffs of all time, and was simply thinking what that list would look like if it were bass guitar riffs instead...then I got on the thought of personal favorites. So here they are, my personal favorite bass guitar riffs--not solos or players or bass parts...simply riffs. List is in ABC order by artist, and in no way concrete. | 1 | Bad Religion Epiphany
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BUrdazftS0 -- Jay Bentley proves why he's one of the best bassists in punk rock with the opening to this song. | 2 | Black Sheep The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9F5xcpjDMU&ob=av3nm -- One of the most recognizable basslines in hip-hop, IMO. | 3 | Boysetsfire Bathory's Sainthood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efhsO20uHEY -- Very Tool-like, but one of the very first basslines I ever fell in love with. | 4 | Brand New Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbSZa1b3M_E -- I got into Brand New because of this song; I got into this song because of the bass opening. | 5 | Common Be (Intro)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FkVmZt2tg0 -- Beautiful way to start out a hip-hop album. | 6 | Descendents Myage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1n_QNicyMs -- The bass part right before the chorus is the single part that I think of most when I think of this band, but the whole song is an example of awesome bassage. | 7 | The Doors Peace Frogs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRJKOtM-onM -- Far and away my favorite Doors song, specifically for the bass. For as relatively simplistic and repetitive the song is, it's amazingly effective. | 8 | Dr. Dre Nuthin' But A G Thang
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qkP8SvHvaU -- Surprisingly not the most recognizable part of the song, but I love the way it flows and fits together. | 9 | Green Day Longview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy5XR-oxCus&ob=av3nl -- THE bass riff of damn near every 90's teenager. | 10 | He Is Legend Dinner With A Gypsy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIFJ7t705S0 -- That the bass riff is my favorite part of this song says OH SO MUCH about Matt Williams...especially in that jazzy outro. The whole damn song is amazing. | 11 | Jane's Addiction Mountain Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ5kGqOstMc -- Deceptively simply, but decisively effective. It sets the tone for the entire song, which isn't necessarily HEAVY, but definitely very WEIGHTY and voluminous. | 12 | John Frusciante Dark/Light
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1eGIIPtn-s -- Of course, I mean the bass riff that starts when the choir is vocalizing for the last five damn minutes of the song. | 13 | Michael Jackson Bad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTWQxCoYgXI -- You know this one. | 14 | Nas It Ain't Hard To Tell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9Wk3Cv02oQ - Four notes, that's it...and it carries the whole damn song. | 15 | Newsboys Elle G.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mERhGFdwJE -- One of the best thing I can say about an opening bass solo is that it gets me pumped to hear the rest of the song, and that's what this does. | 16 | Red Hot Chili Peppers Higher Ground
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gs2o5T7oN8 -- You knew a Chili Peppers song was getting on the list (even if it was a cover). This is a strong contender for my absolute favorite bass riff of all time, so yeah. | 17 | Rise Against Like The Angel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0bUgbbOp5w -- See #4; replace 'Brand New' with 'Rise Against'. | 18 | Starflyer 59 Wake Up Early
http://ilike.myspacecdn.com/play#Starflyer+59:Wake+Up+Early:732979:s26687687.9514701.5848126.0.2.132%2Cstd_48ed83cfb4634cf6a263c274f30b0ba3 -- Just cool. | 19 | System of a Down Mr. Jack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uUruXmq_Kc -- Haunting. | 20 | Tool Schism
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo -- You knew this would be on here, too. | |

01.21.11 | List is not complete, nor is it immutable. I do want to mention that there were certain bass parts I didn't include because they're technically not riffs, like the bass solo in Rancid's "Maxwell Murder," or any part of the bass in Mudvayne's "Not Falling" or any Victor Wooten song.
Also..."Aerials" would've been chosen over "Mr. Jack," but I found out that that's not a bass riff, so yeah.
Copy and paste links to hear songs. | Urinetrouble
01.21.11 | needs jazz bassists | KotoFtw
01.21.11 | Same situation for me on 4. Back when FUSE played music videos. | Masochist
01.21.11 | Urinetrouble - Yeah, true, but they'd overrun the list. I was going for more...traditional modern song structures, not so much instrumentals. Besides, I don't know too many specific jazz songs; I just enjoy jazz music period. | acorncheese
01.21.11 | Oceansize - No Tomorrow | Butkuiss
01.21.11 | Stanley Clarke-School Days.
And no Claypool or Steve Harris!? No Sean Malone or Roger Patterson?! List is irrelevant, though Chancellor somewhat redeems it. | MUNGOLOID
01.21.11 | cool to see so much hip hop on here. i like it i like it. could use some "Excursions" by A Tribe Called Quest though. | NigelH

01.21.11 | No Quarter by Zeppelin | Masochist
01.21.11 | Butkuiss - Not a list about specific people, only bass riffs that I've heard that take a good song and elevate it to something amazing. I don't listen to Atheist (though I'm interested in them), have only ever heard one Primus song, and while I definitely enjoy Iron Maiden, none of the bass parts really stick out for me as much as the guitar parts.
MUGOLOID - Oooh...you know, I definitely took out "Electric Relaxation" in the very last minute to accommodate the Michael Jackson song, because while "Electric Relaxation" has an awesome bassline, the one in "Bad" is the REASON I enjoy the song so much, whereas "E.R." has lots more for me to enjoy. | SloppyMilkshake
01.21.11 | Well, no Primus. This list sucks. Could use some Beatles too. Paul was godly at basslines. | Urinetrouble
01.21.11 | needz moar primus songs list is phail without it | Masochist
01.21.11 | LOL...again, only one Primus song I've ever heard ("Jerry Was A Race Car Driver"), though I recognize his talent, much like Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne. | Urinetrouble
01.21.11 | download the first 4 primus albums now | wyankeif1337
01.21.11 | don't | Urinetrouble
01.21.11 | wyankeif shut up or i'll rape yo through the netzs | wyankeif1337
01.21.11 | oh shit bro | deathcap
01.21.11 | I thought everyone knew bass was gay. | Drydensucks
