overtheedge: Writing Music

thebhoy 03.01.11	My writing style is just to improv on a key for a while until I find something and build on it. My songs are usually 80% improv but yeah that's jazz for you. Also, I play piano, not guitar.

BlueW 03.01.11	For some reason I really don't like Andy I play guitar aswell, play in a band (although I play bass in my band), write my own stuff too... So far the writing process of my solo stuff goes through the process of either mindlessly play an open tuned guitar until i find a riff I like or start in fl studio and work out the rest from there

overtheedge 03.01.11	thebhoy, that sounds a lot like how I've writing. It feels nice to be making my own music though rather than playing someone else's
Blind 03.01.11	I love all of the influences you've posted, and I think the marriage of these influences into one cohesive piece would be really cool. Be sure to post it if you ever get it recorded!
overtheedge 03.01.11	If I ever do I'll be sure to, but some of them, like C+C, are more influences on how they play certain chords rather than the whole style, or other small things.
North0House 03.01.11	I wish I played guitar, to be honest. I've been playing piano relentlessly for the past 10 years... So I can play most anything at this point. Yet, I still can't put together a song that sounds half decent. It sucks.
thebhoy 03.01.11	some people can't write good songs, and by some I mean a lot. I'm an average songwriter. I have some good stuff just nobody ever hears it. I really want to record some stuff.

acorncheese 03.01.11	I've been messing around on my dad's guitar for years, but have never attempted to learn it as an instrument. I have lots of ideas memorized and written down. Oceansize's disbanding has seriously made me want to do some studying and practicing and pursue those ideas. I'll never have the satisfaction of hearing new music from them, so I feel the satisfactions now gotta come from myself.
Superbus 03.01.11	Just finished a 25 minute jam with my band haha, yeah dude good luck starting to write your own material. what we do is find a good bassline or riff, and then improv in that key, and when we find something to build on, we build on it. it's pretty simple man. however, writing pop songs is much harder than you would think. remember "it takes more skill to write a great pop song like Gloria than Stairway to Heaven"
acorncheese 03.01.11	I think I've gotta take some fundamentals of music classes at my community college lol. I don't know a THING about theory. Don't know how to play in a certain key. Don't know more than a few chords. No scales. I know virtually nothing about music. All I know is that I have fun playing guitar, bass and drums. Planning on getting a drum kit sometime this year.
