| Tv Show Opening Videos
I've always had a soft spot for music videos. I remember in high
school watching videos by The Used and AFI and how much more
moving the music was when put to some kind of visual theme. The
OP of a TV show is basically a music video that has the added
purpose of setting the tone for a show. A crappy opening certainly
doesn't mean it's going to lead into a bad show, but a good one
can add to the mood beautifully. So here's my ten favorites: | 10 | The Magic School Bus

Never before and never since has rockin' a river of lava been so sylish. | 9 | The Tick

Da DWEEEEE dadada dwee daa. | 8 | Neon Genesis Evangelion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A62011nyXNI
I have to admit, this opening makes the show look totally gay (it's actually
the greatest work of audiovisual art ever made), but I also have to admit
that this is my favorite Annoying Japanese Pop Song ever, other than the
one that plays at the end of Rebuild 1.11. Also, it's always a joy just to look
at Eva's awesome character design and detailed facial animation. | 7 | Men in Black

Saturday morning nostalgia aside, this tune is a stylish blend of
instrumental hip-hop and new age ambient. Watching it makes me miss this
show like crazy. This cartoon was the greatest thing that ever came of that
movie. | 6 | Samurai Champloo

As someone who generally tries to stay away from hip hop, I'll say that
Nujabes, who wrote this song and most of the rest of the show's
soundtrack, is a genius. Keep your gun-toting, g-rag wearing rap away from
me, but I'd jam to this all day long. Plus the video showcases the show's
brilliant, smooth, fast-paced animation with an ounce of abstractness that
suits the song very well. | 5 | Early Edition

Such an underrated show, such a great intro. With the perfect "urban
meadow" music that embodied the show's setting, to the enigmatic images
of the characters sitting in and then vacating the city park bench, this is an
example of a video that can just be fun to watch while still maintaining a
little bit of artsiness. | 4 | Pinky and the Brain

If you don't know this song by hear... well... I'm sorry about your sheltered, politically
unchallenged childhood. Lyrical brilliance. Stunning animation. Great stuff. | 3 | Firefly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrAS20mNZUE
No list like this one would be complete without Firefly. I'm pretty sure Joss
Whedon wrote this song, although I could be wrong. Anyways, it strikes me
just how well Western influences were incorporated into this song (and the
soundtrack of the entire show) without being overbearing. The visuals
during the trailer are fairly cliche for an opening, but the song's so
awesome it doesn't matter. | 2 | Phantom: Requiem of the Phantom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn2vBaO1q5E
Not only is this song absolutely beautiful, it perfectly sets the tone for the
haunting, heart-wrenchingly tragic story that follows it. I never once
skipped this intro while watching the show, and it managed to give me
chills every time, particularly the very end, with Zwei tied to marionette
strings and the masked face of Ein flashing across the screen. | 1 | Ergo Proxy

Atmospheric. Bleak. Gorgeous. This has always been my favorite show
opening ever since I first saw it. The song is awesome, but it's the images
that hazily slide by with the music that really make this video. I especially
love the silhoette of Vincent, Pino, and the old guy fishing, a serene image
that stands in contrast to the darkness of the rest of the video. Too bad
the show itself couldn't live up to the promise of the opening video. | |
