10.06.11 | Yeah, some of these only have instrumental scores. Oh well. Also, I know that Once is from Ireland.
Feel free to rec anything similar to a particular film on the list. |

10.06.11 | Once is quite hipsterish around in these parts, a good movie though. I wanted to see Broken Flowers. |

10.06.11 | Thirteen is basically the darkest teenage girl movie ever.... and it's really fantastic. |
Trebor.
10.06.11 | I love Ghost World |

10.06.11 | Definitely check out Broken Flowers. As many great performances as Bill Murray has had, I think this is one of his best. |
BallsToTheWall
10.06.11 | The Life Aquatic is my favorite of his although I haven't seen What About Bob to my family's chagrin. |
omnipanzer
10.06.11 | I don't know that any of these are underrated. Most of these are definitely not for everyone. |
AsoTamaki
10.06.11 | Haha, What About Bob was hilarious. It was the favorite of this older lady I used to do work for. Made me watch it three times.
They're just underrated based on IMDB as I mentioned. |

I'm saying I don't agree with your presumption. I find most of these to be very slow movies that most would not get into. I like the ones of these I've seen 8/12 but I can recognize that out of all 8 most people that aren't cinema buffs probably won't like them very much (adequately represented by the number of votes).
Have you seen "Cash Back" I think it would be right up your alley. |
MisterTornado
10.06.11 | Eyes Wide Shut. |

10.06.11 | I see what you're saying. Although, I think most of these would appeal to at least one fairly large demographic even if they aren't film buffs.
Haven't seen Talk Radio or Cash Back. Will look into those. |

10.06.11 | Cool. Seems interesting and I haven't seen the cast in 50 other things which is nice sometimes. Too bad it doesn't seem to be on blu-ray. |
foreverendeared
10.06.11 | Yeah Sunrise/Sunset were pretty great movies. Also Waking Life, yeah, basically any Linklater. Little Children is amazing. Once is great too. And now as I'm mentioning these movies, they are all fairly highly acclaimed, not underrated at all. |
MarvellousG
10.06.11 | Just saw you had Once and Waking Life too, two more films from my top 10. I think I reviewed the Waking Life OST on here a while ago, I LOVE that soundtrack |

10.06.11 | "Thirteen is basically the darkest teenage girl movie ever.... and it's really fantastic."
I haven't seen thirteen--i do remember watching an oprah segment years ago that talked about the film--but I've seen three Larry Clark movies (kids, bully, and ken park) so y'know I can say with pretty good authority that there's no way that's the case.
anyway I think "A River's Edge" and "Trust (1990)" are far too unknown. |
AsoTamaki
10.06.11 | Oh, sweet. I didn't even think to look for the actual OST for some of these. |
americanohno
10.06.11 | okay I was being an asshole w/ that last comment about thirteen, you qualified your statement and i still came in and tried to one-up you. Also to be fair none of those Clark films I mentioned where strictly about teenage girls, just teenagers in general--regardless of gender.
i apologize. |

(If memory serves) It started as a short film that was submitted to IFF and won a few awards. this movie is what resulted and is footage edited onto the original short. |

10.06.11 | I wouldn't say that any of these films was underrated tbh. Less than 50,000? What kind of indicator is that? |

Let me know If I can rec you any more like these. |
AsoTamaki
10.06.11 | Right, teenage girls. Those Larry Clark films do focus on some darker details, but was a bit more extreme in the portrayal. Thirteen had more of a "your daughter could be doing these things" kind of vibe. Overall, as a film, I think Thirteen is better made. Kids is great though.
@omni: Oh, that trilogy is right up there with most of this list. Love it. Didn't include any non-English language films, but yeah. Feel free to rec them. |
Trebor.
10.06.11 | Not a whole lot of people have seen Citizen Cane or Seven Samurai |

10.06.11 | I can't give specific numbers, but I can say that votes of one website (however popular) isn't an indication of the amount of people who have seen a movie. Citizen Cane, I would venture to guess, has been seen by the majority of English speaking peoples over the age of 40. In other words, a shit-ton of people.
Not sure about Seven Samurai (although it's enormously popular as well, just not as much in America), although I'd guess that's because the movie is like 15 days long. |
AsoTamaki
10.06.11 | Oh, no argument. 115k is a lot for IMDB. Even mega-blockbuster recent movies like The Dark Knight only have ~500k ratings. It's not like everyone who watches a movie logs into a website to rate it as soon as it's finished. I only made this criteria to qualify the term "underrated" in some way. |
americanohno
10.06.11 | i fink he was kiddin' maybe.
another film i think is underrated is "Strang Circus" if like jodorowsky's (sp?) film you'll love it.
Also there's two films i haven't seen that seem great but are pretty obscure:
"Amer" -- which finally got an american dvd/bluray realese
trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaEKIgHr1_0
and "Last Night at the Alamo"
full movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ1v1jOthLo (in what looks to be poor quality but since the film doesn't have a dvd release that's prolly the besy ya gonna do)
anyway this film had a huge influence on jim jarmusch and richard linklater. |

10.06.11 | The Sono Sion directed Strange Circus? I enjoyed it, but thought it perhaps a little bit too twisted. He's an amazing director though and I love some of his other works. Will check out the recs, thanks.
@foxblood: For sure. Really diverse soundtrack too. |

10.06.11 | yh man it's a fucked up movie I found real fun to watch. which may say a lot of unfortunate things about me. anyway yh man I'll check out thirteen since you like it more than clark's movies. |

10.07.11 | You know, I didn't get to see Submarine. Heard good things about it though. I really just don't go to theatres that often these days. Will be anticipating the home release.
@Balls: Definitely need to watch that. I'll admit to not having seen as many pre-1970s classics as I should. |
