10.16.11 | Check out Boris, they are incredibly good and although they're very unique, I think they fit in with the style of music you like. Their discography is huge, but it's ALL good. Also check out the album Happy End - Kazemachi Roman. It was named the number 1 japanese rock album of all time by Rolling Stone Japan, which of course doesn't mean much because Rolling Stone is a terrible music reveiwer, but that album actually probably deserves it. |

10.16.11 | Yeah, I second Boris. Also, Corrupted are Japanese, but their songs are usually in Spanish so I dunno how much help to you they'd be. |

I can't tell if you're interested in Japanese metal or not... it wouldn't be much help to you since the vocals are usually just as distorted as in Western metal, haha.
J-rock is an option (although a lot of it is crap); the only band I still listen to is Dir en Grey, though. |

10.16.11 | Yeah, you would love Boris based on this list. For mainstream rock, try The Yellow Monkey. They're definitely my favorite of the 90s. Also, check out Yoshii Kazuya's (the singer and rhythm guitarist) solo albums. It's more modern sounding and he just released his latest earlier this year.

10.16.11 | See what I said about Angel? I knew he'd see Japanese in your title and click away.
Also, I'm not entirely convinced with this immersion method. There was a girl who skipped first year and got into the second year class with me in college, because she had mastered enough basics from watching anime/reading manga, but she started struggling throughout the term, because her actual sense of grammar was fucked to hell and she kept trying to use phrases she picked up from those, which often aren't appropriate for actual usage. She also spoke in an anime girl voice - and this was a white girl (whose voice in English was about five octaves lower). I actually quit the second term, partly because I didn't want to have another semester with her.
But if you're not, say, trying to get a job in Japan, you should be fine, lol. |

10.16.11 | "Also, I'm not entirely convinced with this immersion method."
Ionno, the biggest weeaboos in my school tend to do the best in Japanese, simply because they are so hellbent on embracing/being embraced the culture. But we're learning conversational/basic Japanese and it's high-school, so that might be the difference. I'm surprised she had no grasp on the grammar if she supposedly mastered the basics and learned from reading manga/watching anime. The easiest part about Japanese language for me right now is the grammar, I'm horrible at remembering everything else.
The only thing I find wrong about this is that you're trying to immerse yourself with only? music. I can't imagine learning English through music, or poetry for that matter. I'd sound like a bigger fob than the fobs I hang out with. |
NOTINTHEFACE
10.16.11 | Haha no, obviously not. Read the site's table of contents, it gives a better explanation. The idea is that you learn kanji and kana, then go straight into reading sentences, but all the while you listen/watch as much media in the language as you can. His methods are a little extreme, but I figure a little music in the language can't hurt. Plus, your brain picks up more than you realize while you're just listening to what seems like background noise. I can say that from experience. |
Vesper
10.16.11 | "Besides, i'm also taking japanese at college, so I'm getting good grammar from that."
Ah, okay, you'll be totally fine.
And, yeah, I went through the FAQ pretty quickly, but, aside from people who have a natural knack for language, most people I've met find it difficult to just pick up an entirely foreign language, since the way East Asian languages are structured can be quite different if you're used to English.
My program taught speaking before reading and writing, so my teachers just tried to make us speak and listen to Japanese as much as possible, albeit from each other rather than media.
"I'm surprised she had no grasp on the grammar if she supposedly mastered the basics and learned from reading manga/watching anime."
Well, it's more that she understood basic conversation and could talk fine colloquially, but since her structural understanding of Japanese wasn't strong enough, once we started moving into more advanced, complicated areas, she seemed like she was too dependent on how she grasped Japanese to work from media, not what our teachers were telling us. |
NOTINTHEFACE
10.16.11 | Sounds like a learning problem with her to be honest. My Japanese teacher is pretty adamant about teaching us the polite form first and the conversation form later, because it's easier to go that direction than in the reverse. |
Vesper
10.16.11 | Yeah, same here. Besides this girl, it seems to be harder for people to go from the other direction (and they're more likely to slip up and use too casual forms). A friend of mine who was half-Japanese, half-German had similar problems in first year, because he had spoken it all his life with his family, but had to basically learn it all again in polite forms. |
spillingmercury
10.16.11 | Just read bits of it right now. It's pretty motivational in terms of pursuing studies and whatnot.
@Vesper: That sounds like a lot of my friends who grew up speaking Asian languages but weren't raised to write/read it fluently. Most of them don't get promoted to a higher level course though, not that I know of. |
