| Masochist's Magical Mystery Tour (of Florida)
Earlier this month, I took a week-and-a-half long solo road trip from rLubbock, TX to Florida and back (via New Orleans) to see the sites and meet rmy father for the first time. It was an experience, to be sure...here's rhow it went down. | 1 | | Louis Armstrong The Definitive Collection
SATURDAY - I picked up my rental car in Houston (a 2012 Chevy Malibu with
150 miles on it) and drove to New Orleans. Chilled on Bourbon Street, ate
Etouffee, listened to jazz, collected some beads. A good time, no doubt,
but it reminded me a lot of 6th Street in Austin (with more nudey bars). | 2 | | Asobi Seksu Citrus
SUNDAY - Drove from New Orleans to Tampa, FL. Long drive...very pretty,
but very long. How long? I left New Orleans about 8:30 a.m. and got to
Tampa about 2:00 a.m. the next day. Of course, I took the scenic route
along the panhandle coast, lost an hour from the time zone change, and
took a nap in Perry, FL, but still...a long-ass time to be in a car. Luckily, the
rental car I got (the second-cheapest one they had) came with Sirius XM
radio, so I was listening to comedy routines and talk radio most of the time.
It made the trip so much more bearable that I can't imagine how I could've
taken the trip without it. | 3 | | War Greatest Hits
MONDAY - Met my dad (and his wife of 15 years) in Venice, FL for the first
time ever. It was insane...but after the initial awkwardness, it was a good
time all around. He treated me to seafood and such, we did some things
around town, and then chilled at his house. He made tacos, I spun the
night, the next morning I left. It really could've been a lot worse than it
was, and I'm glad I finally got to meet the guy from whose loins I come
from. | 4 | | Vanilla Ice To The Extreme
TUESDAY - After the father meeting, drove to Miami that night...and then a
tropical-depression-type storm hit. It was kinda bad; I was at a McDonald's
trying to wait it out while looking up the weather details, and The Weather
Channel mentioned that a tornado had actually hit at a particular corner
near a resort. It was about this time that my phone crapped out on me (it
hasn't, and probably won't recover). Later, after the rain died down and
the Tornado Warning subsided, I drove to the nearest truck stop I could
find...only to discover that it was on the very corner that the fucking
tornado had swept through about half-an-hour before. Freaky shit.
Also...while I was dealing with that, back in my hometown, an 8,000 ft. high
wall of dust swept across the city and blotted out the sun. | 5 | | Kevin Rudolf In The City
WEDNESDAY - Still in Miami; the rain calmed down, drove to Miami Beach.
Checked out The ArtCenter South Florida, which is probably one of the most
unique art museuems I've ever been in. The artists all have studios there,
and you can chat with them and watch them work. Pretty amazing
experience, to tell the truth. Also went to the World Erotic Art
Museum...VERY interesting, to say the least (they have the actual white
penis rocking chair from 'A Clockwork Orange' in there). Had a cuban buffet,
drank a mojito at Ocean's 10, and stepped foot in the Atlantic Ocean for the
first time in my life. Good times, to say the least. | 6 | | The Beach Boys Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys
THURSDAY - Key West. Storm passed by, so the sky was blue and clear,
weather was awesome. Did all the touristy thing -- Shipwreck museum,
Hemmingway House, Southermost Point. Also had a Cuban Sandwich,
which was so, SO damn good (actually, it was a Midnight Sandwich on
Cuban bread, but they say a medianoche is closer to an authentic Cuban
anyways). Had to leave pretty early, though, because I had somewhere to
be by eight. | 7 | | Converge Jane Doe
THURSDAY NIGHT - Drove to West Palm Beach to meet up with Dan, John
and Wylie...or rather, dnor, Iluvatar and BallstotheWall. Stayed a couple
hours at an all-night restaraunt, headed downtown to World of Beer (the
only thing they have on their menu is beer and wine...but have over 500
different types of beer and wine to try). I had a nice Irish Cider; poor Dan
had barley wine. Afterwards, we sort of bar-hopped and chilled. Drank
some more. Chatted some more. Got hit on by cougars (well, Dan did).
Oh, and took pictures like this one:

...and this one:

...and this one:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/JetWarrior/Pictures%20to%20share/OutWithTheGuys3.jpg | 10 | | Mutemath Odd Soul
FRIDAY - Drove from West Palm Beach all the way back to New Orleans so I
could catch a MuteMath show. Show was SO DAMN GOOD; I'd rank it in my
top 5 shows of all time (Below Muse and System of a Down; right around
Rise Against and Bad Brains). Also, chilled on Bourbon Street again; had
gumbo and New Orleans BBQ Shrimp (with that orgasmic garlic pepper
sauce!). Another good night. | 11 | | Grailknights Return To Castle Grailskull
SATURDAY - Drove to Houston. Returned my rental car, and ended up going
to the Texas State Renaissance Festival in Houston that afternoon. Only
spent four-and-a-half hours there (not enough, trust me), but it was
awesome nonetheless. Had some to-die-for sushi at Ra Sushi Bar that
night. | 12 | | Buddy Holly The Chirping Crickets
SUNDAY - Back to Lubbock. Back to life; back to reality. | |

10.28.11 | One of the best trips I have ever been on. Solo road trip, slept in the car, showered at truck stops, drove whenever and wherever I wanted to. It was damn amazing.
Also, again, met my dad for the first time ever.
Hope to meet some other Sputfolks again; we have a few stories to tell now :-P. Fucking Pit missed out on the Night-At-The-Roxbury-Spoof-style Against Me! Sputnik Singalong. Oh, well...his loss. | Masochist
10.28.11 | Sup, Josh | Masochist
10.28.11 | Hell yeah...one of my absolute favorite rap albums. | Deviant.
10.28.11 | Worst Usual Suspects lineup ever ;) | Ignimbrite
10.28.11 | I would love to be a part of an epic irl sputnik brodown like this, but alas, no one lives in San Francisco. | Relinquished
10.28.11 | lol the kamehameha pose, you guys look so young and I look like I'm 25 when I'm actually 4 years younger.

10.28.11 | Awesome sounding road trip. Epic pics, haha. I'd hang out with all of ya ;D | Masochist
10.28.11 | Hell yeah. Hey, when I met my dad, he told me that most of the rest of that side of the family lives in...SAN DIEGO. I'm thinking I need to meet the rest of the fam...;-) | aok
10.28.11 | some of us new yorkers meet up now and again, but we're probably more low key people than most of the sputnik crowd.
coachella 2012 weekend one should be pretty epic though for anyone thinking of going | aok
10.28.11 | also, this list should def be featured | Relinquished
10.28.11 | looks like hanson wanted a piece of that ass | taxidermist
10.28.11 | Whaaaaat, haha. We def need to hang out when you get a chance to come over here. Should prob wait another year until I'm 21 though, lol. Then we can go hard m/ | Masochist
10.28.11 | Relinquished - LOL...thought the same thing when I first saw the full-sized picture XD
Tax - Got it, man. Halloween 2012 will be epic ;-) | taxidermist
10.28.11 | Dude, YES. | Masochist
10.28.11 | aokuneff - I've always wanted to go to Coachella, but it always costs too much (both to get there and to get in). Oh, well.
Also...don't know about a feature, but I will explain why each album is where it is:
1 - Louis Armstrong is from New Orleans
2 - As I passed through Pensacola, DeLuna Fest 2011 was happening. I stopped in at a cool hot-dog place across the street just as Asobi Seksu was about to play.
3 - I remember seeing that album in my dad's house when I first walked in.
4 + 5 - Both Vanilla Ice and Kevin Rudolf are from Miami, FL.
6 - The Beach Boys' surf rock reminds of the drive to Key West...the Overseas Highway. Also, I passed through Key Largo.
7 + 8 - Bands mentioned while chatting.
9 - The aforementioned Night-At-The-Roxbury-Spoof-style Against Me! Sputnik Singalong.
10 - The band I saw in New Orleans, and the album I listened to the most on the entire trip.
11 - Because it for no reason at all reminds me of Renaissance Festivals
12 - Buddy Holly and The Crickets are from Lubbock, TX. | Masochist
10.28.11 | Tax - We'll get Wayne and Andcas down, we'll convince Ban to fly back down again, we'll break shit and have a good time. IT'LL HAPPEN. | taxidermist
10.28.11 | We have a whole year to plan this, so let's get it going! Maybe have some more spuddies come down? :p | Masochist
10.28.11 | Whoever can/wants to come down can come down. I don't know who lives in the So-Cal area. Ignimbrite,
you want in (maybe not So. Cal, but Cal nonetheless)? | Trebor.
10.28.11 | Thug life | tkxxx7
10.28.11 | No Michigan involved? Oh.
Yo Mas, why'd you post the pictures out of order (i.e. 2, 1 3?) | Masochist
10.28.11 | Hahaha...the numbers are just the order that I edited/saved them onto my computer. I posted them here in increasing order of ludicrousness :-P. | BallsToTheWall
10.28.11 | medianoches are the fucking shit. Thursday night was bomb, I needed something like that. | Satellite
10.28.11 | lololol fucking hanson in 9

10.28.11 | "This conversation is lively and interesting" | Masochist
10.28.11 | Balls - I'm happy it happened. It's the first time I have ever met people in real life who I first got to know online.
Satty - It was...though I'm not going to lie, the whole time I was there, it didn't feel like I was talking to "MY DAD." Just felt like I was talking to a stranger who let me spend the night at his house...which I guess I was. Maybe at the family reunion.
OH! I forgot to mention in my list that I also talked to my paternal half-sisters on the phone for the first time, too (I've chatted with them online for over a year now). | WeepingBanana
10.28.11 | mas this is amazing. so jelly.
i need to get in on this in the future | BallsToTheWall
10.28.11 | Still cant believe your not from England weeping. | aok
10.28.11 | this definitely deserves a feature because it consists of a lot of well put together thoughts imo (but what do i know?) sputnik meetups are fun | WeepingBanana
10.28.11 | lolballs | Trebor.
10.28.11 | I requested a feature m/ | Samshine
10.28.11 | Sound amazing, so happy you got to meet your dad Mas, must have been a good feeling. Now you can defs check that one off the bucket list. Also, beyond jelly that you got to meet Hanson. We could have taken pictures like that too but uhh... *sniff*.. i uhh.. *sniff* i see how it is.. you know, no uhh.. no hard feelings. | WeepingBanana
10.28.11 | don't even complain sam. john hasn't teased you like he has me =[ | BallsToTheWall
10.28.11 | pirates of the sputnibbean. We should become a fierce horde of pirates terrorizing the north east and north west. | Waior
10.28.11 | I do need to meet Mas.
Really cool that you got to meet your father and than see MuteMath (and I guess John Hanson). Seems like a lot of boxes were checked. | Satellite
10.28.11 | i know, weeping is so effeminate that i assumed he was from england for the longest time ;) | BallsToTheWall

10.28.11 | Sam - Yeah, I know, I'm regretful. I'll visit Vancouver again, though, don't worry :-)
Weeping - You look more British than Stokes does, IMO. I though you were English, too :-P
Tax - No...you don't ;-) | Emim
10.28.11 | "http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b99/JetWarrior/Pictures%20to%20share/OutWithTheGuys2.jpg"
One of these things is not like the others. | BigHans
10.28.11 | oh hey this was the night when Balls drank like a pussy. | wabbit
10.28.11 | how come hanson looks like a normal dude in two of them and then he looks like he's rocking the downs and is fat in the other? | BigHans
10.28.11 | for some reason I always pictured Dnor as a skinny hipster. | taxidermist
10.28.11 | @Mas Is he that tough? I'll back off then :p | Masochist
10.28.11 | Tax - Guy is hardcore. On his birth cert., it shows his name as John Fucking Hardcore Hipster Hanson. | tkxxx7
10.28.11 | John Hipster Faggot
Hanson | dnor
10.29.11 | Lol Hans....you were wrong eh? And yeah. Hansons wanted dis ass | Waior
10.29.11 | "Waior, watch out dude, someone's after your title."
what title? | foreverendeared
10.29.11 | Dude, I like you, but did you really go to New Orleans and chill on fucking Bourbon street? Dude, you're doing it alllll wrong. | foreverendeared
10.29.11 | "One of these things is not like the others."
Yeah, one guy doesn't have his arms crossed. | jefflebowski
10.29.11 | just out of wanton inappropriate curiosity, who's who in those photos? | foreverendeared
10.29.11 | Mas, Balls, Iluvatar, Dnor left to right | Masochist
10.29.11 | Forever - I spent a grand total of eight hours in New Orleans between the two days, three of which were spent at the MuteMath show. Had I had more time (and gotten there earlier), I probably would've spent most of it at The Preservation Hall listening to whatever Jazz was playing that night, but I was just doing what I could in that little amount of time (between eating, drinking, and walking, I actually had very little time to do much else in the city).
HSThomas - No way I could beat Caleb in traveling. That guy SKIPS the US when he bounces around places. I've only ever been out of the country once...for only three hours.
jefflebowski - foreverendeared got it right ;-) | foreverendeared
10.29.11 | Fair enough! I hope you at least enjoyed some delicious food. The best food I've ever had was in New Orleans. Sooooo good! | Masochist
10.29.11 | Wish I could've done more...
New Orleans BBQ Shrimp had me embarrassing myself :-P | foreverendeared
10.29.11 | My mouth waters just thinking about NO food. | foreverendeared
10.29.11 | Bourbon street is pretty nuts, by the way. I don't think I've ever seen so many shit-faced people in one concentrated area behave so well. haha |
