Masochist's Magical Mystery Tour (of Florida)

Earlier this month, I took a week-and-a-half long solo road trip from rLubbock, TX to Florida and back (via New Orleans) to see the sites and meet rmy father for the first time. It was an experience, to be sure...here's rhow it went down.
1Louis Armstrong
The Definitive Collection

SATURDAY - I picked up my rental car in Houston (a 2012 Chevy Malibu with
150 miles on it) and drove to New Orleans. Chilled on Bourbon Street, ate
Etouffee, listened to jazz, collected some beads. A good time, no doubt,
but it reminded me a lot of 6th Street in Austin (with more nudey bars).
2Asobi Seksu
Citrus

SUNDAY - Drove from New Orleans to Tampa, FL. Long drive...very pretty,
but very long. How long? I left New Orleans about 8:30 a.m. and got to
Tampa about 2:00 a.m. the next day. Of course, I took the scenic route
along the panhandle coast, lost an hour from the time zone change, and
took a nap in Perry, FL, but still...a long-ass time to be in a car. Luckily, the
rental car I got (the second-cheapest one they had) came with Sirius XM
radio, so I was listening to comedy routines and talk radio most of the time.
It made the trip so much more bearable that I can't imagine how I could've
taken the trip without it.
3War
Greatest Hits

MONDAY - Met my dad (and his wife of 15 years) in Venice, FL for the first
time ever. It was insane...but after the initial awkwardness, it was a good
time all around. He treated me to seafood and such, we did some things
around town, and then chilled at his house. He made tacos, I spun the
night, the next morning I left. It really could've been a lot worse than it
was, and I'm glad I finally got to meet the guy from whose loins I come
from.
4Vanilla Ice
To The Extreme

TUESDAY - After the father meeting, drove to Miami that night...and then a
tropical-depression-type storm hit. It was kinda bad; I was at a McDonald's
trying to wait it out while looking up the weather details, and The Weather
Channel mentioned that a tornado had actually hit at a particular corner
near a resort. It was about this time that my phone crapped out on me (it
hasn't, and probably won't recover). Later, after the rain died down and
the Tornado Warning subsided, I drove to the nearest truck stop I could
find...only to discover that it was on the very corner that the fucking
tornado had swept through about half-an-hour before. Freaky shit.
Also...while I was dealing with that, back in my hometown, an 8,000 ft. high
wall of dust swept across the city and blotted out the sun.
5Kevin Rudolf
In The City

WEDNESDAY - Still in Miami; the rain calmed down, drove to Miami Beach.
Checked out The ArtCenter South Florida, which is probably one of the most
unique art museuems I've ever been in. The artists all have studios there,
and you can chat with them and watch them work. Pretty amazing
experience, to tell the truth. Also went to the World Erotic Art
Museum...VERY interesting, to say the least (they have the actual white
penis rocking chair from 'A Clockwork Orange' in there). Had a cuban buffet,
drank a mojito at Ocean's 10, and stepped foot in the Atlantic Ocean for the
first time in my life. Good times, to say the least.
6The Beach Boys
Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys

THURSDAY - Key West. Storm passed by, so the sky was blue and clear,
weather was awesome. Did all the touristy thing -- Shipwreck museum,
Hemmingway House, Southermost Point. Also had a Cuban Sandwich,
which was so, SO damn good (actually, it was a Midnight Sandwich on
Cuban bread, but they say a medianoche is closer to an authentic Cuban
anyways). Had to leave pretty early, though, because I had somewhere to
be by eight.
7Converge
Jane Doe

THURSDAY NIGHT - Drove to West Palm Beach to meet up with Dan, John
and Wylie...or rather, dnor, Iluvatar and BallstotheWall. Stayed a couple
hours at an all-night restaraunt, headed downtown to World of Beer (the
only thing they have on their menu is beer and wine...but have over 500
different types of beer and wine to try). I had a nice Irish Cider; poor Dan
had barley wine. Afterwards, we sort of bar-hopped and chilled. Drank
some more. Chatted some more. Got hit on by cougars (well, Dan did).
Oh, and took pictures like this one:

10Mutemath
Odd Soul

FRIDAY - Drove from West Palm Beach all the way back to New Orleans so I
could catch a MuteMath show. Show was SO DAMN GOOD; I'd rank it in my
top 5 shows of all time (Below Muse and System of a Down; right around
Rise Against and Bad Brains). Also, chilled on Bourbon Street again; had
gumbo and New Orleans BBQ Shrimp (with that orgasmic garlic pepper
sauce!). Another good night.
11Grailknights
Return To Castle Grailskull

SATURDAY - Drove to Houston. Returned my rental car, and ended up going
to the Texas State Renaissance Festival in Houston that afternoon. Only
spent four-and-a-half hours there (not enough, trust me), but it was
awesome nonetheless. Had some to-die-for sushi at Ra Sushi Bar that
night.
12Buddy Holly
The Chirping Crickets

SUNDAY - Back to Lubbock. Back to life; back to reality.
