11.15.11 | Where in Korea and what for?
(Please don't be the predictable English teacher...)
I have nothing to offer you in terms of recs, though, haha. |

11.15.11 | fill it with Korean music! |
Vesper
11.15.11 | ^ Just not K-pop.

AtomicWaste
11.15.11 | I am the predictable English teacher. But I actually have a Bachelors in English Ed., unlike 98% of the people over there filling the job.
And Busan is where I'll be moving to. |
BSX
11.15.11 | @Vesper - that's the only reason people go there . . . and for KPOP
EDIT: Nevermind y'all posted faster than me ~_~ |
AtomicWaste
11.15.11 | Yeah, I should probably find some K-pop to bring or something. Does Korea have a brand of visual kei? haha |
BSX
11.15.11 | KPOP is the visual kei |
Ovrot
11.15.11 | listen to some trot

Vesper
11.15.11 | Haha, okay, well, at least you're actually qualified. That's okay, then. :]
Sweet, I have some family around there. Hope you like Korea! More than I do, anyway, haha. |
BSX
11.15.11 | @Vesper - TELL US WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!! |
Vesper
11.15.11 | Kpop is awful for the most part. There's something of a punk scene in Seoul, but it's hard to find it if you don't know someone in it.
My suitemate in college played this alllll the tiiiimee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dww9UjJ4Dt8&ob=av2e |
Vesper
11.15.11 | @BSX - Lolwut? It's not a specific incident, just a lot of problems I have with the mainstream pop culture and other aspects of Korean society/values. Still, we have goddamn awesome food, so enjoy that, Atomic. |
LordOfAlexandria
11.15.11 | There's some great black metal activity under Nerbilous, if you're into that sort of thing. Not sure how often their acts perform live, but at least you know there's some life to the underground. |
BSX
11.15.11 | @Vesper - OK, I see your point I have a few friends that are Korean and we sometimes talk about the cultural difference between America and Korea. |
silentstar
11.15.11 | The Reign of Kindo - Hold Out
Tides of Man - Chemical Fires
Deas Vail - Birds
Circa Survive - Get Out
Just a couple of songs you could check out, and if you like them, you can always get the albums :] |
BallsToTheWall
11.15.11 | Promoting that communist agenda of your eh? |
AtomicWaste
11.15.11 | @Balls - You know it, mengh. Packed up 25 t-shirts, all red.
@Shadow - I have Circa and Tides (both of those albums are win) I'll check out Reign of Kindo and Deas Vail.
@Lord - Not that into Black Metal, but if it's what I can get around there, I'll take it.
I also plan on getting drunk and watching a professional starcraft game or 80. |
DeathByDaydream
11.15.11 | if you like closure in moscow you'll probably like pmtoday. |

11.15.11 | Was kinda hoping you'd be batshit mental enough to go to North Korea. |
PayneTiger777
11.16.11 | I know a guy I used to work with who is now a teacher in Korea. |
RooseveltsGhost
11.16.11 | Supertramp, Dream Theater, Russian Circles, and Cosmogenesis. Also more Scale the Summit. |
North0House2
11.16.11 | I knew a kid from South Korea once. He was obsessed with Blink 182, wanted to be a sumo wrestler, and climbed over bathroom stalls just because he could. His name was Anthony, and he was cool.
Dude, learn to play Starcraft well. It's a sport over there. No joke, it's televised. |
North0House2
11.16.11 | Also, fill it with Ben Frost, Stars of the Lid, and Jakob. |
Eclecticist
11.16.11 | batshit mental |
Riptide
11.16.11 | Lol korea, sucks for you. Say hi to kim jong il for me, hes such a homie |
North0House2
11.16.11 | Dude, there is a South Korea haha. |
ncguitar
11.16.11 | Holy shit I lived in Seoul for two years, though I was 11 when I got there. People are weird, dude.
"Dude, learn to play Starcraft well. It's a sport over there. No joke, it's televised."
True story, all they stream on korean TV is food programs & people playing shit (especially PES). |
qwe3
11.16.11 | "korea's culture is awful"
korea's culture is deep and immensely interesting
also i hope you like starcraft listmaker |
ncguitar
11.16.11 | "korea's culture is awful" you're an asshole, of course you'll have that idea if you're a self-centered scumbag |
TheseModernThings
11.16.11 | im korean and i approve of this. |
Vesper
11.16.11 | "korea's culture is deep and immensely interesting"
"you're an asshole, of course you'll have that idea if you're a self-centered scumbag"
I'm pretty sure sif's talking about the pop culture there, not the ethnic culture and traditions, because sif would be totally correct in that respect. |
TheseModernThings
11.16.11 | i was raised in busan for 6 years. korea has one of the richest cultures but you won't find that there, seeing as you'll most likely be living in the city. korean pop culture does suck, but it's the same reason why people in America listen to Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. And yeah, starcraft is pretty crazy there.. they have a tv channel for it. what you should be excited for is the food. friends who go there for month long vacation trips come 15 pounds heavier, but surprisingly there are very few overweight people compared to America. enjoy your trip! |
sifFlammable
11.16.11 | nono vesper im talking about their general culture |
Vesper
11.16.11 | Uh, okay, sif.
I thought I had a lot of a self-hatred towards Koreans, but I guess not.
And, wait, I'm not the only Korean on here. Woah. |
sifFlammable
11.16.11 | and im 100% korean and lived there for 11 years + on and off for my entire life
so yeah what the fuck would you know ncguitar |
Vesper
11.16.11 | Lol, that was referring to the comment that you edited, so now I just sound mean, haha. |
sifFlammable
11.16.11 | i thought it'd sound better if i did a separate address to ncguitar lol
seriously the level of oppression and insecurity the members of korean society have to face daily is extremely cruel |
AtomicWaste
11.16.11 | Going to Good Korea, not Best Korea, for what it's worth.
I'll have to check on some more recs - already have plenty of DT, but I'm kinda burned out on it. I'll have to look at Cosmogenesis, Supertramp, and House's recs.
For some reason I tried Russian Circles and was not into it.
And lolyeah, Starcraft. I've been a fairly big starcraft player (though my friends are much more into it now than I am) and used to follow the Korean leagues. Here's hoping for tickets to a Jaedong vs Flash match. As a player I'm only mediocre at Starcraft 2 and pretty bad at Brood War.
I do plan on exploring and hopefully I won't overindulge in food. I've been told to plan on losing weight, so I'll be striving for that. Much more walking than I'm currently used to should help (got a dose of that when I visited Japan for a month a few years ago). |
ncguitar
11.16.11 | Well, there is no perfect culture. All regions have great things and major fuck-ups. And I lived in Korea long enough to see that they are hard workers, very reliable and respectful with authorities. In their negative aspect, people are shallow and quirky, and there is a huge percentage of people with depression-related problems.
Ah fuck it, let's handle this like men and beat each other in TF2. |
Vesper
11.16.11 | Yeah, tell me about it. Korea's fucked from the top down.
I get more angry about the pop culture side of it, because it's more in my face.
My niece moved there when she was in junior high from New Jersey, and she eventually had to be home-schooled because the shallow girls at her high school relentlessly bullied her because she wasn't 45 kg.
Girls talk about plastic surgery in regular conversation, since it's not out of the ordinary to get eyelid surgery as a HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION present. Sickening. |
Vesper
11.16.11 | ncguitar, with all due respect, if you're not Korean, you don't get to experience the really awful undersides of our culture, because you'll be treated as a foreigner. |
sifFlammable
11.16.11 | "eyelid surgery as a HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION present"

11.16.11 | Does she call her boyfriend 'oppa'?
I hate that cutesy Asian girl shit.
Lol, Korean bonding on Sputnik over how much we hate Koreans. |
ncguitar
11.16.11 | Well, though I evidently was treated as a foreigner, I talked about the topic with a lot of Korean buddies. Also, some aspects were obvious (harsh parents, shallow girls, consumist people, etc). But my point is, no culture is perfect. Latin American are joyful, but unreliable. North Americans are down-to-earth, but way too airy, and so the list goes on.
A major problem is that girls have small attributes of Eve. |

11.16.11 | vesper u forgot the shy expression they have to put on ))

11.16.11 | Yeah, I get what you mean, nc. I just feel it a lot more strongly since I am Korean, obviously. :P
And the Korean boys are dickbags too. No wonder I've never dated Korean guys.
I like how we just hijacked Atomic's thread. Hope he still wants to go after reading this, haha. |

11.16.11 | Lol, Hype, yeah, there's the small problem of all the ones I've met also having fuck all in common with me.
pizza, you haven't met enough Koreans. I BET YOU WOULD HATE ME. |

11.16.11 | Why do korean guys were such trendy clothes? |
BSX
11.16.11 | @Pizza - stop stalking me
@Vesper - Lol, Korean bonding on Sputnik over how much we hate Koreans . . . you would fit in just fine with my (korean) friends

11.16.11 | I read the list title as "I move to Kowea white now! White now!" |
Vesper
11.16.11 | Pit, your stereotypical Korean accent is all wrong, that's more like baby talk.
Should sound more like: "I move to Kohrea lite now! Lite now!" |
TheseModernThings
11.16.11 | cause being trendy is more acceptable in Korea. you'll also notice about 25% of guys carry mens purses/satchel/whatever. not to mention clothes (excluding brand names) are a whole lot cheaper there (Funny story about that during my month long vacation there - my parents stopped at a supermarket near the countryside to buy some fruits for family we were going to visit and there was a tiny rack of t-shirts [around 30 t-shirts] and i checked it out and to my surprise, they were all band shirts. i found a Glassjaw, Funeral For A Friend, and Blink 182 t-shirt [and i don't even think they were from the band cause i couldn't find the same shirt anywhere else online] and a fender and gibson shirt, all for $20) |
