2011 Has Been Strange

A lot of good stuff, not so much REALLY good stuff - but I won't rcomplain. List is in some kind of rorder - i.e. 25 might be worse than, rsay, 27 but it's definitely better than 38. I find comparing rmusic racross genres difficult. Some notable albums aren't here just rbecause I haven't given rthem proper listens yet.
50Keep Shelly in Athens
Our Own Dream
49Beirut
The Rip Tide

Don't believe the hype.
48Woodkid
Iron

Has a surprisingly good Mystery Jets remix on it.
47The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation
Anthropomorphic
46Yuck
Yuck
45Gang Gang Dance
Eye Contact
44Powder! Go Away
Laika Still Wants Go Home
43Son Lux
We Are Rising
42Laura Stevenson and the Cans
Sit Resist
41Okkervil River
I am Very Far

So, so, so disappointing.
40Unexpect
Fables of the Sleepless Empire

well that was unexpect-ed
39Of Monsters and Men
My Head is an Animal
38James Blake
James Blake

Overrated.
37Chad Valley
Equatorial Ultravox
36Radiohead
The King of Limbs

Patchy as fuck but god DAMN Codex is good.
35Walls
Coracle
34The Antlers
Burst Apart

23 Timber Timbre
Creep On Creepin' On
22Deaf Center
Owl Splinters
21Gui Boratto
III
20The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
From the Stairwell

It took its time to settle, and when looking through their back catalog I
don't think they're quite on their top form with this release - but in places it
"clicks" perfectly.
19Milo
I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here

I don't normally listen to hip-hop, but when I do it's depressing and relatable.
18Tycho
Dive

Super chilled-out electronic. It's got that "-wave" genre prefix sound but
manages to have a lot of substance behind it as well.
17Metronomy
The English Riviera

I pretty much see this as the best of Indie Pop. Catchy, inventive and
consistent: what more can you ask for?
16Swarms
Old Raves End

I don't think I enjoy it quite as much as a lot of people seem to be, but "eh"
who cares.
15Wild Beasts
Smother

The exact kind of dream-like-but-a-bit-deep indie that I grew up with ?
relatively speaking that is, I?m not old yet. Yeh, there may not be a retarded
amount to be found in Smother, but fuck it this is my list.
14 The Log.OS
?????

I think I can get away with calling this dubstep, it's definitely street enough
in places. Oh and IT'S FREE! http://the-log-os.com/?b0a8a040
13Tim Hecker
Ravedeath, 1972

Something about this LP makes it perfect thinking music for me. Anyone
else get that?
12Fo//ic/e
Nidificating

Dark, shuffling, experimental indie/electronic. Fuck yeh, tags.
11Maybeshewill
I Was Here For a Moment, Then I Was Gone

Not very sophisticated, in my view at least, but that kind of works in its
favour. I love the almost primal way it just let?s loose.
10Olafur Arnalds
Living Room Songs

A less powerful #1
9The Dear Hunter
Indigo EP

When a band truly pushes themselves to try something different and,
possibly more importantly, succeeds, I?m always going to take notice.
?Therma?, especially, surprised me even more than I was expecting.
8Sigur Ros
Inni

While I?ve always been on the side of Godspeed in the ?OMYGOD WHAT?S
THE BEST POST-ROCK BAND?? shitfest, there?s no denying the excellence of
Sigur Ros, especially showcased as it is in Inni.
7The Caretaker
An Empty Bliss Beyond This World

Corrupting old 20?s dance tunes with eerie electronics ? it?s an odd mix of
comforting and off-putting, but brilliant nonetheless.
6John Maus
We Must Become The Pitiless Censors of Ourselves

I write this under the watchful eye of an Ian Curtis poster. This album
reminds me of Joy Division (in places). Nuff? said, really.
5Submotion Orchestra
Finest Hour

Switching sporadically between chilled-out, loose electronic street stylings
and liberating jazz outbursts ? it?s hard not to find something in Finest Hour
that doesn?t immediately connect. I often hold myself back from reading too
much into this album, I think I ascribe far too much social commentary
compared to what an album is capable of giving? I don?t know, maybe I
should ask other people who?ve been listening to this for a while..
4Amon Tobin
ISAM

An incredibly interesting release: the blend of organic textures with
mechanical structure feels unnatural but somehow fitting at the same time.
It?s easy to see why this may not be to everyone?s taste, but to not find it
at least noteworthy is- to my mind- to be denying yourself a fascinating
listen.
3Colin Stetson
New History Warfare, Vol 2: Judges

I'm just kind of breaking into jazz - I love this kind of dark, atmospheric stuff
so I found it really easy to sink into and enjoy. I hear some people are
having a few problems with it though - if you're one of those people then
you owe it to yourself to try. This shit is insane.
2Fredrik
Flora

I find it quite sad when music as creative as Flora goes ignored. Every time
I listen to it, the album just keeps getting more infectious. It definitely
requires time to get your head fully immersed, but it?s time well spent.
