2012 Intentions And Resolutions

There's plenty to look forward to in 2012 with some of my all-time favorite bands readying new releases (Alice in Chains, Fates Warning, Tool) and others hopefully making their returns to something I can enjoy again (Garbage, Cursive). Still, I intend to make some new discoveries.rThis year will be the year I listen to all of the albums that I've known about and expect to like, but never got around to listening to. This list is a reminder. Although I don't feel like racking my brain trying to think of everything right now. So, in the end, this list won't be as useful as it could be. Oh well.rI will also attempt to prove to myself that the recent popularity of black metal really isn't the worst thing to happen to music since Napster. We'll see what happens.
1Immortal
Sons of Northern Darkness

This is undeniably good stuff. I was awakened to this after someone lent me a live dvd of theirs. I've only heard this album so far, but Will definitely look into the rest of their material.
2Burzum
Belus

This is awful stuff, but I did plan on going through at least one of his earlier records.
3Deafheaven
Roads to Judah

One of the more well regarded black metal albums from last year. MORE than mere black metal, supposedly. Listened to a song called "Violet" from this. Just sounded like "post-rock guitar tutorial part 2" overdubbed with blast beats and some clips of one of those "how to do black metal vocals" videos from youtube. Maybe the rest of the album has more to it?
4Brand New
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

Always seeing this worshipped around these parts. It must be above average if nothing else.
5Coldplay
A Rush of Blood to the Head

I've never listened to an entire Coldplay album even though I loved "The Scientist" and "Clocks" back in the day.
6Public Enemy
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us

One of the few "classic" hip hop records I've neglected.
7Emerson Lake and Palmer
Brain Salad Surgery

Kansas, Genesis, Rush, Camel, The Moody Blues...love them all. I don't know why I've never owned an album by these guys.
8Mastodon
Leviathan

Saw these guys live and they were good yet I never bothered with any of their recordings. Will start here.
9Depeche Mode
Violator

Already know and love half of the album, but I've never listened to it in full.
10Garth Brooks
No Fences

One of the most critically acclaimed country music albums of all time.
11Ke$ha
Animal

Recent Top 40 pop albums. Maybe there are some hidden gems within and the radio singles are misleading. I'll start with the what I believe to be the worst and work my way up. This method may make Katy Perry's material seem like the gifts of a goddess. We'll see.
12Judas Priest
Painkiller

I've already taken far too long.
