Come Now Sleep

Considering how substantial this album is, it's unsurprising that I keep going back every few months and digging the shit out of it. Coincidentally, I haven't been sleeping well for the last 10 days or so. My love life is a fuckin sideshow.rCome rNow rSleep
1As Cities Burn
Our World is Grey

'What's it look like from your side? From here I can't see why it's worth one more coming out cursed.'
I used to love the chorus about men being 'thieves and saints alike', but recently I've waxed sentimental over this line. My friend says Come Now Sleep is a concept album about a Christian and his doubts, but I think it's just songs about the doubts that should be present in any intelligent believer.
2Contact

'Remember we used to speak? Now I'm starting to think your voice was really my own bouncing off the ceiling back to me.'
I was taught that the foundation of Faith must be based in answers to prayers, which is a terribly flawed way of knowing anything. The human mind is perfectly capable of convincing itself of any number of things unconsciously, especially the things it most wants to be true (or the things that it's been told are true). And what a poetic way of putting it.
3The Hoard

'Steady, steady breathers who won't lift a finger for the gasping weaker. You just hoard your hollow completion like it's something wearing thin, like it's gonna get you in when Heaven comes.'
I love this condemnation of the most arrogant of the 'saved'. Let's see how your god feels about that attitude. This song also some bitchin guitar work.
'Good boys don't make mistakes to learn from cause when heaven comes, they won't be caught being young.'
Have you ever met a proper Utah Mormon? Poor souls...
4Tides

'Automated exchanges make us not lovers, but feigners, we are only strangers.'
Cody takes a page from the book of Thiessen and writes about God in a subtle, romantic way that can be taken as being about a skirt. And as usual, it is beautiful. You can't fake that kind of sincerity, which makes the accompanying worship a sickening ordeal.
5Empire

Lyrics be damned, this song fuckin rocks. It was my introduction to As Cities Burn by a buddy of mine from Orem. That dude plays drums for A Lot Like Birds now. You learn something new every day
6New Sun

First of all, o my God, the tapping section. I want it inside me.
'Soon she'll become my new sun. Soon she'll become dim reflected love, to light my way after I trade loving you for loving to obey.'
I'm still not sure I understand the metaphors used in this song and Tides, but I maintain that it's naive to claim that either are about romance.
