Down With Digital

Electronic albums that have changed my opinion about non-guitar music forever. I love these. Recommend me similar artists and records, por favor.

Themes for an Imaginary Film

Initially slated to be the soundtrack of the 2011 sleeper stunner "Drive," the now stand-alone record, which nevertheless makes many nods to its original M.O., is packed to the brim with detail, nuance, and stunning production value. The record is sprawling and engrossing; it makes excellent mood music, as well.
14James Blake
Enough Thunder

Devestating, authentic, and threadbare, "Enough Thunder" is James Blake's nod to the world, his self-assured, closed-eyed smile at the rest of humankind; it is the sound of a young man finding himself before he was really ready, but accepting and embracing his enlightenment fully in spite of it. This EP has me very excited about the future and the music likely to emenate from one of England's brightest and boldest talents.
13Ratatat
Ratatat

I know, I know. This is still a guitar-rock record, techincally. However, for a majority of the its run time, "Ratatat" sounds like rock music from a thousand years in the future. Songs such as "Germany to Germany" and "Chery" lift this record into the stratosphere, conferring upon it a gravitas and transcendence that betrays the light-hearted tone of the vocal interlude. One of my all time favorite albums.
12Apollo Brown
Clouds

These beats are certainly not terrestrial, that's for sure. "Blue Ruby" is one of the most incredible things I've ever heard. I cannot wait until someone gets ahold of this and turns it into the most mind-bending mixtape of all time. I'm looking at you, Jay Electronica.
11J Dilla
Donuts

The man was a genius, and we lost him far, far to soon. This is his magnum opus.
10Caribou
Swim

"Swim" is the kind of record that begs to be danced to just as fervently as it begs to be listened to calmly and contemplated. Absolutely mind-numbingly beautiful and haunting. I really fucking love this record. It's funky.
9Nosaj Thing
Drift

I caught this dude before an xx show at The Church in Philly two years ago. I was immediately blown away by how seamlessly and energetically he wove these creations together. "Drift" simply percolates with a blissful, though sometimes rather dark, vibrancy. I very much enjoy the sort of trance-like rhythms he creates.
8John Talabot
Fin

"Fin" is starting to grow on me in an astounding manner; it feels like the very first inkling of inebration; gut warmed, body suffused with good will and euphoria, skin slightly flushed, all doubts and sadness subverted into reckless world-fucking joy.
7 James Blake
Love What Happened Here

While the entire EP is fanatastic, it's really the first, title track that steals the show here. I have no idea what it is about those synths, which could be dopplegangers for triumphant horns, that endear me to the track so much, but perhaps it has something to do with their playful interaction with that trickling keyboard line running throughout, or those oddly-shattered vocals dancing atop the icicle beat. Amazing.
6Burial, Four Tet and Thom Yorke
Ego / Mirror

Two of my favorite producers that I've heard thus far teamed up with the best songwriter and vocalist of my generation. The resulting EP was nothing short of breathtaking. Dark, dreamy, and full of that dim angelic glint that makes Radiohead so unique and powerful.

Untrue

Picture London at the precise moment during T.S. Eliot's "The Wastland" when "Under the brown fog of a winter dawn, A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many, I had not thought death had undone so many." Textured, gritty, and resonantly realistic, "Untrue" is the kind of record to play in the rain and think about what the fog means.
4Benn Jordan
Pale Blue Dot

It's a tribute to the wonderful, late Carl Sagan and it's a concept record about traveling from the Earth into deep space and back again. This one connects with me in a very profound, sublime way.
3I Am Robot and Proud
Uphill City

Evocative of an imaginary place both whimsical and surreal, "Uphill City" is the kind of electro-pop record that absolutely never gets old and sounds as refreshing, inviting, and invigorating as the first time I listened to it in my early twenties. I love falling asleep to the now-familiar sounds of its imganiary cityscape.
2James Blake
James Blake

I've never heard anything like this; the fusion of mournful soul vocals with glitchy, deep-bass synths really puts this over the top. I like Mr. Blake quite a bit.
1Four Tet
There Is Love In You

Absoultely my favorite electronic album of all time. It's brilliant; beautifully layered, elegantly conceptualized, and executed with pristine, crystaline brushstrokes, creating textures and moods I've not yet encountered anywhere else in music.
