ThroneOfAgony
03.19.12 | Atm me and my friends have no money to get any fancy equipment so we're just using the old school play |

ohfoxxxycole
03.19.12 | how do you get the music from the guitar to audacity |
Hyperion1001
03.19.12 | if youre ignorant on the subject then dont give advice
honestly if you dont have a very good environment to record anything with mics, its best to look into a cheap interface (the presonus audiobox is pretty cheap iirc) and learn to work with VST's. It will give you a pretty good sound and isnt to hard to figure out. of course if youre looking for album quality stuff its best to get studio time, but for home VST's work fine
oh and download reaper, it has full VST support and you can pretty much use it forever if you dont have any problems about ignoring a BUY ME NOW message every time you start it up |

03.19.12 | recording music really became easier when I gave up and jerked off instead |
EasternLight
03.19.12 | myspace.com/eastatthelight (used almost only guitar, amp, and webcam mic)
http://sonofminesunofshine.bandcamp.com/ (more electronic, with vst keyboard that plugs directly into the computer)
All I had to record this shit was like four things, and it turned out pretty ok. |
EasternLight
03.19.12 | So yeah, just get a webcam and vst keyboard and run with it |
SgtPepper
03.19.12 | Okay i used to be in a band.
In that spare room, invest in some egg carton foam and tape it on the walls, The purpose is to reduce, but not entirely eliminate resonance within the room- better sound quality.
People are telling you about Audacity- that's a good program, another one is GarageBand is similar but for macs.
Now as for the creative aspect, listen to the music you love, let the sounds speak to you and inspiration will come. But other things like movies, environment- help too. Also, dont stress about songs, let them develop on their own- if that makes any sense. |

I recorded this song using a $40 mic, a free recording program called mixcraft and a drum machine I "found".
I used little equalizers and no compressor. It's all about finding the right levels for your mic. Play around with things till they sound good, almost any mic can get a decent sound if you fuck around long enough. |

03.19.12 | Thanks a lot, guys. I'm really not looking for studio-quality stuff. Just simple recordings in a spare bedroom. |
Hyperion1001
03.19.12 | then a mic and amp might not be bad for that, but i seriously urge you to download reaper, not only is it a powerful system but learning how to use it will teach you a lot about recording techniques |
Imperial
03.19.12 | yeah just fool around with stuff. Acoustic and clean electrics are easy to get a good sound from. The
more distortion the harder it is and the more you'll have to play around with it. *EDIT* I just place
my mic in front of my amp. |
BlueW
03.19.12 | I use Audacity with a bit of FL |
paxman
03.19.12 | Reaper seems pretty cool, but I can't figure out how to HEAR the stuff I'm recording.... |
AsoTamaki
03.19.12 | Right click the red Record Arm/Disarm button on the track and then check "Monitor Input" or "monitor track media when recording." I think. |
KotoFtw
03.19.12 | If you have Rock Band, you can record your amp with the microphone and run it straight into your
computer, since it has a USB cable. |
