IronGiant
01.11.15 | Boyhood is easily my favorite too and it's nice to see Chef getting some love,I completely agree with you about it being a feel good movie. Plus it's like 50% food porn so that helped haha but it was shot beautifully and really made you leave the theater smiling...and hungry. Chef would be my 2 behind Boyhood, followed by The Babadook at 3, an Aussie thriller that is one of the creepiest films I can remember that has a solid story as well. Still need to see Whiplash! |
furpa
01.11.15 | IronGiant: Yeah I saw The Babadook. I thought the story about the mother getting over her grief was an incredibly strong plot and having to deal with her problem kid and what not, plus it was pretty genuinely creepy. But I dunno, something about the ending with the bowl of worms and the basement kinda made me roll my eyes a bit, but it was definitely a solid film. And yeah I'm glad to see someone on here likes Chef as much as I do. |
EyesWideShut
01.11.15 | cool list mane. my top 10 of the year looks like this:
1. Whiplash
2. Under The Skin
3. Birdman
4. Gone Girl
5. Borgman
6. Cavalry
7. The Immigrant
8. Wetlands
9. Inherent Vice
10. The Drop |
EyesWideShut
01.11.15 | imo Boyhood was the most overrated of the year |
furpa
01.11.15 | @Eyes Glad to see Whiplash at no.1 dude! Still have yet to see Under The Skin, and Inherent Vice wasn't really my thing, wasn't a huge fan. And that's fair to say Boyhood's overrated but like I say in my description, the story of the kid's journey was so close to my own I feel like it really did something to me personally. |
riffariffic7
01.11.15 | 1. Birdman
2. Whiplash
3. The Raid 2
4. Interstellar
5. Foxcatcher
6. X-Men: Days of Future Past
7. Guardians of the Galaxy
8. Joe
9. Under the Skin
10. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Overall, it was a solid year for movies. I still have many more to see, I'm looking forward to seeing Selma and Inherent Vice sometime next week so those two will probably change-up my list quite a bit. Still need to see films like: Snowpiercer, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Drop, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Babadook, Blue Ruin, Gone Girl, and plenty of other films that look spectacular. |
furpa
01.11.15 | @riff I just saw Selma yesterday. The only reason it's not on my list is because I'm technically qualifying it as a 2015 film. But fuck man, Selma is a brutal movie. I hope it contends for Oscar season because David Oyelowo deserves recognition as Martin Luther King. |
Calc
01.11.15 | really need to see birdman |
riffariffic7
01.11.15 | I think he'll get a nomination, not sure if he'll win, but he has to get nominated for sure, he was nominated at for Best Actor (under Drama) with the Golden Globes (which is on tonight, something that shocked me when I saw it on my newsfeed, but I don't really care for the Golden Globes anyway, the nominations are really all I care about; plus, it's usually a good sign on how the Oscar nominations will go down). Though I do hope that Michael Keaton can nab the Oscar, I have a feeling Oyelowo might shock some people and take home the prize given how great the reviews for the film have been. I can't remember being this excited to see a historical movie, it seems like it's going to be this generation's Malcolm X. |
Tunaboy45
01.11.15 | 1 is overrated as fuck
Nightcrawler was awesome |
Tunaboy45
01.11.15 | @Calc saw it last week, amazing film |
furpa
01.11.15 | @riff Yeah I think the thing that really makes Selma special is that it strays away from the traditional biopic formula, like how it doesn't focus on his life from birth to death but rather one incredibly significant moment (this particular moment being the march from Selma). And yeah I'm rooting for so many people to get the best Actor Oscar that I've lost count. I'd be happy if Michael Keaton, David Oyelowo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Steve Carell, Ralph Fiennes, or Bendy-dick Cumberbatch nabbed it. Fuck man it's been a good year for movies... |
Shuyin
01.11.15 | ive been wanting to check Nightcrawler. i dont know much about the movie itself but the cast is fucking awesome
also Interstellar |
JokineAugustus
01.11.15 | Jake Gyllenhaal deserves the globe, though I haven't seen Birdman yet. Ralph Fiennes was great as usual too. Surprised Guardians of the Galaxy wasn't nominated for anything. |
IronGiant
01.11.15 | Guardians was a great movie, but imo it only seemed to garner so much attention because it was a great movie in an otherwise stale, tired, and lackluster genre. Basically, it was a good fun movie that was accelerated even further because most of the other superhero movies have sucked lately |
JokineAugustus
01.11.15 | Top 10 would be (mind you there are still movies I haven't watched)
1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. The Grand Budepest Hotel
3. Gone Girl
4. Edge of Tomorrow
5. The Raid 2
6. Nightcrawler
7. Enemy (yes 2 JG films)
8. Xmen: Days of Future Past
9. Fury
10. Interstellar |
furpa
01.11.15 | Yeah Guardians was a fun movie but I agree IronGiant, I'm thoroughly done with the superhero genre. Wasn't really ever my thing though... |
furpa
01.11.15 | @Jokine Cool to see Enemy get some recognition from somebody. Would have made my top 10 as well but technically I classify it as a 2013 film. |
Flugmorph
01.11.15 | interstellar 4 sure. |
JokineAugustus
01.11.15 | Oh it says the release date was March of last year @furpa |
Kman418
01.11.15 | blue ruin and the one i love and starry eyes and the babadook and the guest |
Flugmorph
01.11.15 | Only seen planet of the apes, interstellar and edge of tomorrow. All were great. Ah seen guardians of the galaxy and the new expendables. They where both pretty meh. |
Flugmorph
01.11.15 | Really want to see 8,5,3,2,1 tho |
apert
01.12.15 | imo Boyhood was the most overrated of the year
agreed, its rides its gimmick so hard, once you get past that it doesn't do anything any coming of age film hasn't done before |
Shuyin
01.12.15 | guardians was entertaining at least, they never took it too seriously and it all ended up being a fun ride. cant say the same about all the other super hero movies as they end up being boring and cliched as fuq |
Flugmorph
01.12.15 | Heard that captain america wasn't that cliché this time hmm. |
ZombicidalMan
01.12.15 | you heard wrong, winter soldier was cliche garbage |
klap
01.12.15 | nobody does a plot twist like mr. fincher....except the author of the book the movie was based off of |
Flugmorph
01.12.15 | Guardians is most overrated Film of the year imo |
furpa
01.12.15 | @klap C'mon man... I assumed everyone would know I was talking about direction. To reiterate, no other film director working today can execute an effective plot twist as well as David Fincher. |
swagb0b
01.12.15 | big hero 6 is mad underrated that movie was awesome
fuckin hated gone girl tho felt like it was missing they didn't have a third act so they just stretched out the first two |
swagb0b
01.12.15 | Guardians is most overrated Film of the year imo [2]
not big on avengers either tho so i might be biased |
zoso33
01.12.15 | gone girl was so intensely good
personally gotta go with The Grand Budapest Hotel for just shockingly changing the pace of Wes Anderson's style; when is this man gonna get a best picture?
other than that i'd LOVE to see Inherent Vice if it ever makes it to a theatre that isn't like 50 miles away.... |
furpa
01.12.15 | @zoso Yeah Grand Budapest is such a fun movie! Stoked to see it won Best Picture - Comedy/Musical at Golden Globes. Definitely deserves all the recognition it can get. |
zoso33
01.12.15 | @furpa YES! so glad that it did well, I can't think of a movie he's made, I mean maybe Rushmore, that just so perfectly encapsulates you inside a book (or like a play within a play) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.12.15 | honestly boyhood is being way overrated. it was very nostalgic and fun but it wasnt anything mind blowing or life changing at all like damn. Grand Budapest and Birdman were both wayyyyyyyyyyy better. Those are my top 2 of the year but I didnt see much tbh. I liked Lego Movie and Guardians too |
SGGreenman
02.17.15 | I love boyhood but I can see where a lot of criticism is coming from. I feel like most of my love for the movie comes from nostalgia. Definitely feel like Birdman was the better movie, but as far as enjoyment goes...
1. Boyhood
2. Birdman
3. Gone Girl
4. Nightcrawler
5. Grand Budapest
6. Inherent Vice
7. Wild
8. The Drop
9. Guardians of the Galaxy
10. Selma
Still need to see Whiplash and Imitation Game.
Interstellar for most overrated movie of 2014. |
YoYoMancuso
02.17.15 | awesome list dude! Chef just came on Netflix so I gotta watch it sometime soon |
SGGreenman
02.17.15 | Anyone know if Whiplash will be streaming on anything anytime soon? Like Netflix or Amazon Instant? I can't pirate movies at college. |
Slut
02.17.15 | BOYHOOD IS FUCKING AMAZING I LOVE BOYHOOD BOYHOODDDDD |
Eloriaz
02.17.15 | Hey, nice list. Birdman was by far my favorite movie of 2014 (I believe it will age very well), closely followed by Budapest Hotel. Only Lovers Left Alive and Under The Skin would be on top of my list as well. Also enjoyed Whiplash/Boyhood/Gone Girl etc. |
ChoccyPhilly
02.17.15 | I'd have 5 and the hobbit as my top ones |
Clumseee
02.17.15 | 1. Boyhood
2. Birdman
3. Gone Girl
4. Whiplash
5. X-Men: Days of Future Past
6. Guardians of the Galaxy
7. Inherent Vice
8. Big Hero 6
9. 22 Jump Street
10. The Lego Movie |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.17.15 | 5,6 and 3 were all way better than 1 to be honest. boyhood was good but it wasnt as legendary as everyone seems to think. not even close. |
Crymsonblaze
02.17.15 | missing a bunch of stuff still but out of the stuff i've seen:
8. the lego movie
7. the interview
6. days of future past
5. snowpiercer
4. edge of tomorrow
3. guardians of the galaxy
2. the babadook
1. predestination
everything else i saw was like a 6/10 or under. still need to see nightcrawler, foxcatcher, gone girl, birdman, big hero 6, and interstellar. i know i'm missing some other big ones but they're things i'm not interested in (or it was an oversight)
oh yeah and worst movie i saw this year: a tie between
1. god's not dead
1. the identical |
Crymsonblaze
02.17.15 | oh and the imitation game. gotta see dat cumber. and john wick. keep forgetting stuff |
SGGreenman
02.17.15 | Still, Boyhood is unlike any movie with the way it was made. It's pretty remarkable to film the same cast for 12 years. |
furpa
02.17.15 | @Crymsonblaze Dude no way The Interview is a best of 2014, for me at least. And I know I'm missing a bunch of action movies and superhero blockbusters, but to be frank I kind of despise superhero movies and haven't been a fan of any recent action movies. X-Men, Cap'n 'Merica, Dawn/Planet of the Apes, Edge of Tomorrow, Amazing Spiderman 2, John Wick, Hobbit, Jack Ryan... all movies I have absolutely no interest in seeing unfortunately.
But on the bright side you've inspired me to do a Top 3 Worst movies of 2014:
-Annabelle (completely destroyed what made The Conjuring pretty cool...)
-V/H/S: Viral (WHS could've been a neat series if they stuck to the formula and kept bringing in fresh new indie filmmakers, but I guess fuck that.)
-As Above/So Below (nonsensical bullshit found-footage fuckery. God I fucking hate this awful bullshit disgraceful cash-grab excuse for a film.) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.17.15 | babadook is overrated as fuck tbh. i mean its cool once you realize its a metaphor for the process of grief but other than that i dont get why it got such amazing ratings. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.17.15 | "Still, Boyhood is unlike any movie with the way it was made. It's pretty remarkable to film the same cast for 12 years."
true, but doing something differently doesn't make it inherently great. its really cool that he filmed that same cast for 12 years and that makes it more impactful for sure, that and the fact that im only a handful of years older than him makes if very relatable as its a 'coming of age' that is literally about the generation that i also
'came of age in'. it was very nostalgic that way, but still, it was a simple film exploring simple topics. it had very high aspirations and i think it succeeded in what it set out to do, but nothing more. as far as impact go birdman and gone girl actually fucked me up and blew my mind and grand budapest was just top quality anderson, i feel all 3 of those films were superior. |
furpa
02.17.15 | @LordePots Thank christ I'm not alone in that opinion on The Babadook. So many folks saying it's revolutionary and the
most terrifying film in centuries or whatever the fuck. It's undoubtedly a great film and the best horror flick of 2014
(which is reasonable considering it's competition...), but it's not as groundbreaking or brilliant as so many are saying. And
fuck the whole grief metaphor for a second, I still find it stupid how they keep the 'monster' locked in the basement and
feed it worms. Kinda made me roll my eyes a bit, I don't care what it represents lol. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.17.15 | it was good for sure, one of the better modern horror films ive seen but it still suffered some typical horror movie tropes, so yeah not that groundbreaking or brilliant. especially when it goes from the babadook (which was actually terrifying for a while) to just the mom being 'posessed' where it just went downhill and wasnt scary anymore. but yeah i dunno the metaphor made me appreciate it a bit more even if i dont fully agree with the resolution either.
i watched this horror movie Mama recently and actually really liked it |
furpa
02.17.15 | Ah yeah I remember seeing Mama in theaters when it came out. Wasn't a huge fan of it, but I don't really remember much
of it now. All I really recall is the mother thing looked suspiciously akin to a potato... I dunno.
Speaking of horror movies (I mentioned this one in my other movie list shit thing), just saw It Follows at the Vic film fest.
Easily one of the most stylistic horror films I've ever seen, I recommend the hell out of it. It's worth the price of admission
for the intense skull-fuck that is the films score. It also starts out with an incredible 2 minute tracking shot that sets the
tone perfectly. You gotta see it if you get the chance. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.17.15 | I will! thank you for that rec |
Crymsonblaze
02.17.15 | i loved the babadook, but it's nowhere near the best horror movie ever or anything along those lines. it was creepy and had some great performances, but i just get disproportionately excited when an actual GOOD horror movie comes out |
DikkoZinner
02.17.15 | Joe was pretty good, Cage was solid. |
adr
02.17.15 | top 5:
Whiplash
Nightcrawler
Birdman
Gone Girl
The Grand Budapest Hotel
other movies i liked:
Boyhood
Interstellar
The Babadook
Guardians of the Galaxy
still need to see The Raid 2, Inherent Vice and The Imitation Game.
|
Mesm277
02.17.15 | Gone Girl was brilliant, Fincher is becoming one of my favourite directors. Guardians of the Galaxy was a pleasant surprise, too. |
Gmork89
02.17.15 | Babadook was #1 for me |
Clumseee
02.17.15 | 'Fincher is becoming one of my favourite directors.'
Weird statement in 2015. |
Kman418
02.17.15 | whiplash was one of the best movies ever probably and i still wouldn't even say it was the best from last year but i feel like that just goes to show what an incredible year for movies it was |
ArsMoriendi
02.17.15 | Out of this list, I've only seen 5. I've seen Inherent Vice too though.
I need to catch up, especially on 1, 3 and 6. |
zaruyache
02.17.15 | Grand Budapest/Lego/Guardians of the Galaxy are like my 123 in no particular order. |
SGGreenman
02.17.15 | Shit 2014 is going to end up being one of my favorite years for film, especially if Whiplash lives up to the hype. |
RivalSkoomaDealer
02.17.15 | Whiplash and Nightcrawler were prolly my favs. Birdman and Gone Girl were pre good.
I have no interest in seeing Boyhood though. |
SGGreenman
02.17.15 | Hm, I might actually watch the Oscars this year.
then again nah |
L4titudes
02.17.15 | 1. Birdman
2. Boyhood
3. Whiplash
4. Blue Ruin
5. Nightcrawler
6. Under the Skin
7. Snowpiercer
8. Lego Movie
9. Interstellar
10. The Grand Budapest Hotel
Have not seen a lot of potentials (Gone Girl, Chef, Foxcatcher, Starred Up, Calvary) |
zakalwe
02.17.15 | Boyhood is 'the' coming of age film of the last 40 odd years and is a masterpiece. It's what film was made for.
Overrated it most definitley ain't. |
apert
02.17.15 | think my favourites are Birdman, Whiplash, Inherent Vice and Grand Budapest not sure on the order though, Under the Skin if that counts as 2014 as well. |
furpa
02.18.15 | Under the Skin was a nutty movie dude. Kinda sick too with the scenes that were filmed with regular civilians without them knowing. |
ParanoidAndroid96
02.18.15 | 1. Interstellar
2. Whiplash
3. Birdman
4. Grand Budapest Hotel
5. Selma |
L4titudes
02.18.15 | Under the Skin was so twisted that's why it was great |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.18.15 | Under the Skin was an incredible film without being (for me) an enjoyable one. |
L4titudes
02.18.15 | yeah I felt disturbed and uneasy.. but then still loved it somehow |
Tunaboy45
02.18.15 | Did you know boyhood took 12 years to make? It's fucking magical you get to watch a boy grow up on screen, it took 12 years to make. |
EyesWideShut
02.18.15 | 12 Years a Boy |
michaelmyerstbh
02.18.15 | 1, 7 9 and 10 appeal to me greatly
