Favourite Films Of 2014

My picks for best movies of 2014. Saw a fuck load this year so I'll rgive honourable mentions to Locke, The Babadook, Foxcatcher, The rInbetweeners 2, Bad Words, and Frank. Also, numbers 1 & 2 could rbe interchangeable since both are strong 10/10's.
1Boyhood
Richard Linklater

This movie was a fucking experience. 3 hours long and I could have watched it for
easily 3 hours more. This might not be at the top of others' lists but I think because
so many of the elements of Mason's story relate closely to my own upbringing it really
did something special to me. If your a fan of film in general then you must see this
movie.
2Whiplash
Damien Chazelle

Holy fuck this movie! J.K. Simmons has easily the best performance of both his career
and the entire year. I hope he, at long last, gets the mainstream recognition he
deserves. And Miles Teller in this movie, equally as brilliant (considering he actually
played the drum parts). This movie is bar none the most brutally intense movie I've
seen all year, and it's about fucking drumming. Though it is about a jazz drummer,
this is undoubtedly a war movie.
3Gone Girl
David Fincher

One of my most anticipated of the year, because I'm a major fan of David Fincher,
and it absolutely delivered. I had my mind blown multiple times during the 2 times I
saw this film in theatres. Nobody does a plot twist like Mr. Fincher.
4Chef
Jon Favreau

Jon Favreau's passion project Chef was biggest feel-good movie of the year, and an
incredibly fun film. It's just such an easy movie to watch and the whole father-son
dynamic really gets me too. I usually tend to gravitate towards really dark, gloomy
movies or movies that demand tons of afterthought, but sometimes it's just as fun to
sit down and chill out with an incredible movie about food...
5The Grand Budapest Hotel
Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is a directing genius. One of the best and most carefully thought out
shot movies of the year. Plus the dialogue is so sharp, and it's execution by a
perfectly cast Ralph Fiennes and his lobby boy (sorry can't remember his name) is perfect.
Probably the most I've laughed in a movie all year, and justifiably so; this movie is
goofy as fuck.
6Birdman
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu

This movie requires some serious afterthought. This film is just so dense and rich with
underlying commentary and meaning that it demands multiple viewings. Michael
Keaton and Edward Norton, and fuck it Emma Stone all kill it in this movie. But the
direction... jesus man, this is near-flawless filmmaking. The way this is shot is so
unique and challenging, but it's perfect. If this doesn't take home the academy award
for cinematography then something's fucked up...
7The LEGO Movie
Chris Miller, Phil Lord

The team that made the Jump Street reboot movies also made this. That's awesome.
But seriously this movie is far more than just a movie about LEGO (which is why I'm
not embarrassed to have an animation so high up on my list). There actually is some
pretty solid social commentary underneath the goofy little lego dudes. Plus the
transition into live-action in the third act was incredible, taking a story about a silly
lego revolution, and then suddenly putting that in the backseat to a real story of a
strained father/son relationship. This movie has far more real depth than any regular
animation.
8Nightcrawler
Dan Gilroy

This was Dan Gilroy's first feature length directing endeavor, and it doesn't show one
bit. One of the more interesting screenplays of the year, backed up by one of the most
incredible performances of the year by Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal is fantastic in this
movie because he plays the best example of a textbook psychopath since Christian
Bale as Patrick Bateman. Also this movie's climax is one worth shitting your pants
over.
9Big Hero 6
Don Hall, Chris Williams

Disney/Pixar once again knock it out of the park. There's really not much I can say
about this movie, it has all the expected elements one would find with a Pixar film
(tons of heart, near laugh-out-loud comedic moments, beautiful animation, and solid-
ass voice work), yet still manages to seem fresh and exciting. If you're a fan of
Disney/Pixar, or animation in general, check this one out cause it's a really good time.
1022 Jump Street
Chris Miller, Phil Lord

This movie is absolutely hilarious, and I don't mind admitting that sometimes I just
enjoy the hell out of a mainstream comedy. As far as I'm concerned, if a comedy
makes me laugh then it did something right. And fuck did this movie make me laugh.
The whole meta/self-awareness thing with sequels this movie has throughout is a
highlight and Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are, as expected, hilarious. The dudes
have great on-screen chemistry. Yeah this movie's way funnier than the first one...
