sooooooooooo yr fav slithery serpent boi saw cap'n jazz's final show (most likely) in BK on saturday, and it will quite possibly be the best show i've been to before i see dillinger in december | 1 | | The Van Pelt Sultans of Sentiment
i've never really cared for TVP at all in the past but their performance kinda solidified my stance on them--bland, boring, and very uninspiring. chris leo didn't sound like he was trying and the crowd kinda learned pretty quickly that their set was just a convenient time slot to go get pissed just in time for cap'n jazz without dealing with the peanut gallery flooding out the double doors. it's a shame because i was really hoping to be proven wrong. | 2 | | Owls Owls
cap'n jazz's set was spectacular as a whole, but tim kinsella's performance was what made the show a complete banger. i wouldn't have thought that somebody well into their 40s would be full of that much energy, especially in a relatively primitive genre. i've never seen a lead vocalist dive off the stage as many times as tim did that night and it's hard to believe that he didn't spontaneously combust on stage. | 3 | | American Football American Football
the great thing about the earlier EPs of cap'n jazz is that the production and background noise make you feel like you're actually in the same room with the band. tim kinsella and co. tried to do exactly that, but only upping the ante on crowd interaction. some of the instruments used on stage (specifically the horn and tambourine) were handed out by the band during some songs without security interfering! the best moment of the night in this instance was the take on me cover, where tim threw the microphone into the crowd and let the audience sing the first two verses and chorus. mike kinsella was almost assassinated on stage by one of my friends with the tambourine! this guy bailed on headlining for my friends' band for the 25th and they're super pissed but they finally understand why: the guy cannot be bothered to play music. he kept fucking up the notes during take on me and finally decided that he was done playing the song, much to the chagrin of the rest of the band (and probably 90% of the audience). what could've been a perfect sendoff for this band but he had to get surly and act like a bitch. | 5 | | Cap'n Jazz Analphabetapolothology
despite bombing the end of the take on me cover, this show was absolutely incredible and i did not expect both the band and crowd to be as electric as they were. they've shown that even after being inactive since the 90's and breaking up to be a part of a wide array of different emo/indie rock endeavors, they still hold the fire that they kindled when they were recording shmap'n shmazz. the entire night was fantastic and i'm so glad i went. | |

stfu i saw cap'n jazz and you didn't i can do whatever i want | XingKing
09.26.17 | I saw Cap'n Jazz twice in Chicago the other week and both performances were fucking godly. Tim Kinsella was like Josh Scogin levels of insanity. | Futures
09.26.17 | wait have you heard ghosts and vodka? | Snake.
09.26.17 | nah I haven't even heard the owls' s/t yet
I'm slowly realizing how few perennial emo albums I've actually checked | Futures
09.26.17 | damn def get on those. owls is really tight, i dig tims voice a lot. ghosts and vodka is really fun instrumental twinkly jams with a little post-rock flair. two ex cap'n jazz guys in it btw if you didn't know which is why i brought it up. shame more don't know them considering their connections but it's really really good. | XingKing
09.27.17 | Owls is absolutely worth checking. The first song will have you hooked. | Trebor.
