The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 8: Umbrella Music

2 shockers out, and 8 in.
1Fela Kuti
Sorrow Tears and Blood

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is jazz! Swing, bebop, modal jazz, jazz fusion, free jazz, nu jazz, jazz rap, jazzcore. Anything jazz, man!

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***
2Townes Van Zandt
Delta Momma Blues

“Tower Song” (Frippertronics)

Is this round boring singer/songwriter with only a guitar round 2? God I hope not. I’m pretty sure country has WAY more to offer than that. I guess I’m supposed to focus on the lyrics, but my brain always goes to the instrumentation first which is just a slowly played simplistic acoustic guitar that doesn’t stand out at all. If you make it to the next round just know that you’ll NEVER do well with these kinds of songs. Unless they’re as catchy as like Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds. This isn’t.

2.5/5 FAILED!
3Gillian Welch
Revival

“Orphan Girl” (AlexanderMR)

Another simple acoustic guitar track, but there’s harmonies in this one, so it’s a little more interesting. If you guys knew my taste better your recs would be more on the maximal side. There’s some steel guitar in there too, so I guess that’s nice, but this is totally just background music and I’m not really feeling it at all. Fun fact: I actually like how the banjo sounds.

2.7/5 FAILED!
4Peter Grudzien
Unicorn / The Garden Of Love

“New York Town” (SandwichBubble)

Oh my god it’s the “Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere” gay outsider music guy! I love him.Songs in the Key of Z is life. Psychedelic country from the 70s? Now THIS is pandering to me. I like how commanding his voice sounds. Good atmosphere here.

4/5 PASSED!
5McGuinness Flint
Happy Birthday, Ruthy Baby

“Jimmy's Song” (Minushuman24)

Cheerful southern rock with a playful sounding piano. We’re approaching the kind of music my dad really likes with this one. Oh wow those harmonies remind me of The Grateful Dead and I hate them, but wait that sax is pretty cool. This isn’t the most engaging this, but it’s harmless and would probably fare well in a social setting that called for chill summer music. Oh nice, the sax got a solo.

3.3/5 PASSED!
6Bruce Springsteen
Nebraska

“Atlantic City” (RikRoach7)

His voice is alright and the harmonica is nice enough when it comes in. The acoustic is fine. Yeah, not my cup of tea, but not bad at all either really.

3/5 PASSED!
7Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
So Far

“Ohio” (ZombieToyDuck)

Neil Young’s voice isn’t my favorite, but it’s mixed with the rest of CSNY, so it’s not too overpowering. Not really the most country, but the vocals make it close enough. That riff is pretty catchy. It feels like it floats in and out in a forgettable way a little though.

3.2/5 PASSED!
8Willie Nelson
Red Headed Stranger

“Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” (bgillesp)

Well mixed bass that super simple, but present, The acoustic isn’t the main focus of the instrumentation so I can instead appreciate how it adds to the whole instead of being forced to focus solely on it, and there’s a nice guitar solo to top it all off. Nelson’s voice feels so comforting and fatherly. This is good.

3.9/5 PASSED!
9Those Poor Bastards
Vicious Losers

“Give Me Drugs” (Grimlin)

As sad as this theme is, I also somehow find it mildly goofy, which if you know me, is a great thing. Bassy, with accordian? Nice. I like the chorus sing along feeling to it too. Simple instrumentation that manages to be rather engaging.

4.1/5 +0.5 = 4.6 (ROUND WINNER!) (handicap of +0.5 next round)

Lost Blues and Other Songs

Palace Music - Lost Blues and Other Songs
“Riding” (NeroCorleone80)

Is this cowpunk? Hmmm First minute was amped up Meat Puppets worship, but now it feels like a slow outlaw country song. Neat. It may be drawn out, but the suffering in his voice makes that drawn out nature feel necessary and the guitar, bass, and drums all keep me engaged. I feel like this is an epic tale or something.

4.4/5 PASSED! (post listen note: this was my favorite of the round, but Grimlin used his own bonus from last round to win this round too lmao)
11Silver Jews
American Water

“Smith and Jones Forever” (Pheromone)

Now this is bassy and oh boy this is the Pavement dude? You know I tried Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and I found his lack of enthusiasm to be annoying, but here it fits better somehow? I’m not in love with this, but it’s actually pretty good.

3.6/5 PASSED!
