| Umbrella Contest 2021 Round 8: Prop Umbrella
2 more out and 11 still in. Also Protokute didn't make the deadline, so he's out as well. | 1 | | Frank Zappa Sheik Yerbouti
1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.
2. The theme this round is Comedy. This is a MUSIC competition, so I want an intentionally humorous SONG, not just a comedy sketch. No songs that are meant to be serious, but are ironically funny. I want comedy as a musical art form. Comedy rock, parody music, satire, meme rap...etc
3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.
4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.
5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)
***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.*** | 2 | | Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Album

Amadou N'Diaye Samb
“Niani”
(Senegalese Griot Music)
That’s a cool string instrument and damn those vocals are abrasive for something so old. A bit repetitive at this point, but also I kind of predicted a lot of these would be. Ooh that instrumental section is cool though. This probably didn’t need to be 5 minutes, but it was cool regardless.
3.4/5 (Passed to next round) | 3 | | Myrkur Folkesange
Pangea
“Harpens Kraft”
(Scandinavian folk)
Fancy acoustic guitar and female somber vocals. Is that cello? Simple, and pretty, but also kind of boring.
3/5 (Passed to next round) | 4 | | Naftule Brandwein Kallarash / Rumeinishe doina
JohnnyoftheWell
“Kallarash”
(Austrian Klezmer)
This feels like a triumphal march from an old cartoon. I appreciate the lead clarinet. Now it sounds like one of those Jewish chair dancing songs, is this song for a Bar Mitzvah, or does all klezmer work naturally for a Bar Mitzvah? Fun to say the least, in an old people kinda way.
3.6/5 (Passed to next round) | 5 | | Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Album

“Jazz Funeral”
“Rhythm of the jazz band” *sax sample* Okay this is very off-theme, but I’ll comment on it further anyway. Cool sample, cool percussion, very danceable. The organ/keys are cool too. The chanting brings a lot to the intensity of this song. I could see this going over well at a dance party with more open minded guests. His rapping feels like he’s just narrating the dance. My brain kinda tuned out for a second because it’s very long and repetitive (like many good dance songs,) but it’s still cool. Follow the damn theme next time though grrr.
3.7/5 (-1 for not following the theme) = 2.7/5 (ELIMINATED!) | 6 | | Zabelle Panosian I Am Servant of Your Voice: April-May, 1917

“Groung”
(Armenian Folk)
Pretty operatic vocals with minimal piano and crackling. I know that because the crackling isn’t intentional, it’s not really an element to the song, but it’s adding something anyway. As if she’s singing a lament in the rain. This got old fast, but it’s not awful.
2.9/5 (ELIMINATED!) | 7 | | Carlos Paredes Guitarra Portuguesa
Zig
“Canção verdes anos”
(Portugesue Fado)
A guitar and a mandolin. I guess this is instrumental. It’s slow and romantic, and flashier than a lot of the other entries, as if it’s too win over a local suitor. I like it well enough, it’s got that melancholic feel I dig sometimes.
3.5/5 (Passed to next round) | 8 | | Huun-Huur-Tu The Orphan's Lament
SlothcoreSam
“Chiraa Khoor”
(Mongolian Tuvan Throat Singing)
I do not recognize any of those instruments in the video, but they sound similar to violins and cellos. Wow his voice has a cool whistling to it. This is very jaunty. There’s so much more to this than just weird throat singing, it’s an experience.
4.1/5 (Passed to next round) | 9 | | Gjallarhorn Ranarop – Call of the Sea Witch
garas
"I Riden Så"
(Swedish Folk Music)
Simple acoustic guitar and harmonized vocals. I like how she has a brogue, but she’s Swedish? I guess the Swedes can have rhotic rolls too. Pretty violin section. This was engaging for sure, but I don’t love it.
3.7/5 (Passed to next round) | 10 | | Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun Divine Music from a Jail
Ryus
“How The Shadow is Clear”
(Tuvan Throat Singing)
Accordion? The throat singing here is much uglier than on the other song. I wonder how many cigarettes you need to smoke before you can sound like this. For some reason this reminded me of Tom Waits, so that’s cool I think?
3.2/5 (Passed to next round) | 11 | | Oumou Sangare Ko Sira
Trifolium
“Kayini Wura”
(Malian Wasselou music)
Cool strings, cool vocal harmonies, and cool guitar (or it might be something similar.) I like that soloing. This is probably the most “modern” sounding song on here that won’t lose points. It’s weird to read that this genre (Wassoulou music) apparently almost exclusively features women as vocalists. Regardless, this is sick as hell.
4.5/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 5/5 (ROUND WINNER! handicap (for others) of +0.5 for the next round) | 12 | | Dorival Caymmi Caymmi e seu Violao

“É Doce Morrer No Mar “
(Brazilian Samba)
More pretty guitar with romantic vocals. This gives me a similar feel to contemporary folk where it’s just a man singing his feelings over a guitar with nothing else, but I will at least add that the guitar work is certainly more interesting and the vocals are still able to be very resonant. Good, but not amazing.
3.3/5 (Passed to next round) | 13 | | Yma Sumac The Spell Of Yma Sumac
botulist
“Malaya !”
(Andean Folk)
Flashy guitar again! Oh damn those handclaps give it a flamenco vibe. Is she singing opera? Now there’s harmonizing, whoa, this is like a mishmash. Holy shit those notes were insanely high, like Queen of the Night aria high. And now she’s going low. Impressive stuff that kept me on my toes.
4/5 (Passed to next round) | 14 | | Oumou Sangare Seya
Minushuman24
“Iyo Djeli”
(Malian Wasselou music)
What’s that instrument? The strings are cool again and I like the harmonizing. Those drums (djembe, I think) and super quick and dancy. Flute and brass instruments? Hmmm this is probably the most involved of all of the choices this week. This is obviously great, but I can’t help shake that it’s too modern sounding to count? Lucky for you even if you lost a point, you’d have enough to pass.

08.29.21 | @bgill: prob like a 3.4, it's cool, but not the best delta blues song I've heard
I stand by not counting it because it's so on the line between modern music and traditional folk that you could argue that this style was the genesis of pop/rock/r&b etc | bgillesp
08.29.21 | Not sure where you get R&B from but fair enough. I’ll concede and cease further grumbling | ArsMoriendi
08.29.21 | Not my point, my point is that old blues lead to most modern genres | SlothcoreSam
08.29.21 | Hey Arse, are you rating on how funny the song is, or how good of a song it is? | ArsMoriendi
08.29.21 | Technically: how good it is
BUT
How funny it is will probably factor into that, but I guess if a song is intended to be funny, isn't funny at all, but has mind-blowing instrumentation, it'll still do well | Trifolium
