Pangea Jazz (Jazz Week 4)

Hallo everyone! I have the honour to host jazz week for this edition. I got here two very different approaches to jazz, but hope you all can appreciate both.
1Charles Mingus
The Clown

The Clown is the first time that Mingus' more excentric side really worked for me. The spoken word of the titletrack and bonus track 'Passions of a Women Loved' could easilly have been a vibe-ruiner but they remain engrossing. It's a somewhat depressing story but told with a lively spirit. This is a spirit that is captured throughout the album with its wandering bass, piano and horn instruments. Charles Mingus really is a master of breathing life into his compositions that make them so exciting to dive in to.
2Mark Hollis
Mark Hollis

Although, admittedly an album more inspired by jazz as being jazz itself, I think that the way Mark Hollis uses those influences is fascinating. Mostly moving away from the post-rock of the latter Talk Talk era, he creates in what is essentially a singer-songwriter album rooted in 50s and 60s jazz and classical music, Mark Hollis is one of the best in using silence in his music. Every instrument and melody is given so much space to breathe and thereby creating such a beautiful, minimalistic atmosphere
