2k16 Underdogs

Haven't made a list in a while, so might as well make one sharing some underlooked records from this year that deserves a bit more attention.
1Charles Bradley
Changes

Soul

No joke, this guy has one of the best voices in music today. The passion this man puts into his performances is astounding. Plus, some great songwriting to boot. I wrote a review for this if you want a more fleshed out take on this.

Swiss Army Man OST

A-Capella

To fit in with one of the strangest concepts to a movie I've heard of in a long time, the soundtrack to Swiss Army Man is not only equally creative, but it's also fitting given the movie's concept. But without the movie, this soundtrack is still an incredibly beautiful batch of a-cappela compositions that can range from serene, to haunting, to amazing ly uplifting. Plus the single that came out for it, "Montage", would definitely appeal to fans of Animal Collective.

Shoutout to Rowan5215 for giving this more attention, and getting me on it
3Atlanter
Jewels Of Crime

Progressive Pop

If you want some pop and rock music that packs quite a creative punch instrumentally, give this a shot. It can sound a bit too cleanly produced at times, but it's worth it. Plus, if you want to get into some bands not from the typical US, UK, AUS music scenes, now is your chance.
4The Suffers
The Suffers

"Gulf Coast Soul"

They may not be breaking any serious boundaries, but this band's debut self-titled is a great slice of soul and funk that takes bits and pieces of reggae and jazz to spice things up. "Giver" is probably one of the best songs of the year as well.
5Soda Island
A Trip To Soda Island

Future Bass

If you're really into really upbeat, high-energy future bass that's all the rage rn, there's quite a bit of that in here. The first few tracks on this record are incredibly solid executions of that sound. On the flip side, the middle portion of this record is filled with much more low-key tracks that act as great chill-out music. The back half of this record is a bit spotty, especially the more overblown future bass cuts, but the first ten tracks on here are a real great treat for people who are into this type of music.
6Dr. Lonnie Smith
Evolution

Jazz-Funk

The funk is real on this record, and Smith's keyboard skills are prevalent throughout 'Evolution'. The only real lull is the kind of bland cover of "My Favorite Things", but other than that this is a real solid funky jazz record that is prefect for people in search of more music of that variety.
7Meilyr Jones
2013

Baroque Pop

Leaning way towards the refined, Meilyr Jones's '2013' is an incredibly charming record that makes up for any drawbacks with a batch of beautiful arrangements that sometime remind me of 'The Smile Sessions' (but that may be because I was listening to that a lot when I listened to this record). Not ever track will stick in your head, not including the infectious opener, but it's very pleasant on the ears, that's for sure.

Shoutout to CL0VER (that's your name and nothing or nobody is going to tell me otherwise) for exposing me to it

Feel The Night

Pop

While the appropriate season for these types of songs is just about gone, these four tracks are a total blast. Songs like "Dive/Argentina" and "Halcyon" are absolute jams that bring serious tropical vibes that I personally love to bits. He's got a new record coming out this year, so this is a guy I recommend keeping up with. I wrote a review for this too, so check that out as well (if you want).

9Oddisee
The Odd Tape

Instrumental Hip Hop

It may seem a bit odd considering this is just an instrumental record, but this is actually my first time listening to any Oddisee project. This first impression couldn't have been better, because this is probably my hip hop album of the year. The beats that fill this record are very laid-back, making this a wonderful record to listen to while working on something else. But when the album is front and center, the infectious, jazzy loops and grooves present throughout the album can be quite hypnotizing.
10Bullion
Loop The Loop

Indietronica

If I could use one word to describe this record, it'd be "quirky". The beats throughout this record are incredibly playful, if not a bit overly silly at times, and produce/songwriter Nathan Jenkins shows off his ear for melody more than once.

Shoutout to Potsy for reccing me this, with the compliment that "it fills the void that ****ing s*** animal collective album left"
