10.11.23 | This started off fairly accurate in when I first heard it but ended up a bit of a mix up
All hugely important albums to me |

10.11.23 | was starting to list off some of my favorites from here but it was over half the list lol, some great choices. I feel the same ways about birthdays as I get older, they feel more and more existential with each one. Hope you were able to do something celebratory or entertaining on some level |
Shemson
10.11.23 | Thanks Tim! Yeah it’s the wife’s birthday the week after mine so we’re actually enjoying Edinburgh for a few days right now, hadn’t been before, lovely place |

10.11.23 | Born in ‘88.
A good year.
Early teen years spent in the 00s I don’t envy in any way whatsoever. Bloody abysmal.
Happy Birthday for a few weeks ago mate. |

10.11.23 | happy birthday! sweet list |

10.11.23 | Happy birthday mate. I'd have a good few of these on my version of this list too. I'm only a year behind you. |

10.11.23 | Thanks guys, I always think you can tell a lot from peoples lists like these, not just their age, so glad to hear it resonates with a few!
Zak I may well agree with you but what specifically about the 00s sucked for you? |

10.11.23 | Musically
The ‘scene’ was comprised of imposters and parodies
T’internet killed excitement and the organic process of it all
Nothing truly revolutionary came out and no artist was in anyway shape or form ‘iconic’
In general
Football became big business and we imported the foreign method of rolling around on the floor acting a complete tart to get people booked.
Society became homogenous as fuck
Pub ‘culture’ started to get bought out and all that pub dining bollocks became a thing.
Social Media
Superficiality on steroids
Every Cunt had a tattoo

10.11.23 | Absolutely agree on football
Social media, steroids and tattoos haven’t played a part in my life so that’s all fine
Pub culture in Aldershot took decades to catch up with London so don’t worry about my youth there, it was suitably scuzzy 🤣
In terms of music I disagree. Things were iconic, you just didn’t like them because you weren’t on that culture wave. I was a part of the MySpace music boom where my band could suddenly get gigs in London supporting big bands because we had decent tracks and following online - it was awesome. |

10.11.23 | MySpace was quirky but did it unite the people and create anything that has stood the test of time?
Arctic Monkeys were the ones where the internet played a key role in building the mystique but there was undoubtedly something missing. Something I can’t quite put my finger on just seemed incredibly forced. “This is the future and you WILL enjoy it!!”
The Strokes and the ‘garage band’ revival of 2000-2003 was probably the last remnants of how things were but even then there was something missing. There was more superficiality flying about.
Then there’s the festivals. What were mass gatherings of relatively normal people all with a shared purpose just turned into sponsored events attended by credit card waving bunch of complete wankers.

10.11.23 | I think the addictive community elements of MySpace got perfected by Facebook and Instagram and unfortunately the incredible music sharing platform became extinct because the listeners all jumped ship because the social media elements were outdated
I think MySpace was pivotal in bringing metalcore and extreme metal to the masses where it just wasn’t before. Everybody at my college knew who Whitechapel, JFAC and BMTH were and a lot of those kids then expanded their horizons and got into more credible stuff shortly after
I went to loads of festivals, multiple Downloads, Sonisphere and Reading and it was definitely not commercialised at that point, it was raw af - kids living in their own filth and starting the day with beers and shots 🤣 |
bellovddd
10.11.23 | ahhh some classics and life changing albums there for me to. hope you had a great birthday. |
BitterJalapenoJr
10.11.23 | Aldershot you say? You know the band Reuben?
Also would agree that the 00s festivals I attended were filthy, wild and fantastic (Download, Leeds, Sonisphere, T in the Park) and I certainly had no credit card. Barely ate for those weekends so I could spend the pittance I had on cigarettes and alcohol.
That said, I appreciate that I've no concept of what the 90s festivals that Zak experienced were like. |
Pikazilla
10.11.23 | Happy cake day!
Gonna jam 1 alongside, it absolutely rips. |
Shemson
10.11.23 | Thanks bellovddd
Yes jalapeño! My first ever life show was supporting Reuben at a shitty festival at camberley football club! We were playing metalcore and did not go down well 🤣
Thanks Pika - yeah Wildhearts are chronically underrated. So many great songs with huge choruses and it’s not from that album but Caffeine Bomb is still one of my favourite quick adrenaline hit songs! |

10.11.23 | "Yes jalapeño! My first ever life show was supporting Reuben at a shitty festival at camberley football club! We were playing metalcore and did not go down well"
That's fucking brilliant. I loved Reuben in school and saw them plenty times in Glasgow. Jamie Lenman is sound as fuck with his fans too. |
VaruunZealot
10.12.23 | Slayer "dissonant"? I think someone needs to google dissonant meaning
Happy birthday though man : ) Hope you've had a good day |
Mort.
10.12.23 | 'I saw these on top of the pops when I was about 6 years old'
big up top of the pops for shaping many a young brits music taste
still watch the reruns on bbc4 occasionally, my god theres so much dogshit filler and like one good act at most per episode |
Shemson
10.12.23 | Haha yeah Mort, even simply by having a zep riff as the opening theme TOTP definitely helped shape my music taste!
VaruunZealot - I’m surprised you say that. Slayer and dissonant riffs and chords is a pretty common shout.
Thanks for all the good wishes sput folks |

10.12.23 | Wooo I'm 33 and this list resonates with me a lot too
Every time I see Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation, I have to listen. Off to relive that one again! |
Shemson
10.13.23 | Yes mate, it’s on of those albums you can come back to again and again and it never sounds old |

10.13.23 | "Juneau" is like...THE sound of when I was 17-18. Once those opening guitar bits start I'm transported right back. So gooooood |
