| My Top Ten Albums of 2016
With the year coming to a close, it's safe to say that my list is complete. Be prepared for a lot of metalcore my dudes (I mean look at my pie chart fam). I love you all | 1 | | Invent, Animate Stillworld
Progressive Metalcore
Blew my expectations out of the water, they improved their sound in every way imaginable. Powerful vocals in the form of yells, lows, and clean singing, riffy guitars that truly pack a punch, not a single bad song on here imo. This is what I wanted Northlane to become
Favorite tracks: Indigo, White Wolf, Celestial Floods, Dead Roots, Soul Sleep | 2 | | Annisokay Devil May Care
Metalcore/Post-Hardcore
Just straight up fun metalcore backed by two great vocalists. Dave's screams are vicious, and Chris truly has one of the better singing voices in the genre, albeit it can be a little high for some people. Fun riffs from the guitarists, overall solid record
Favorite tracks: Loud, What's Wrong, Smile, Hourglass, The Last Planet | 3 | | Bad Omens Bad Omens
Metalcore/Sempiternal 2.0
Ever wonder what would've happened if BMTH's Sempiternal was improved? This is that album, plus Noah can actually sing well. Nothing exactly new, but damn if they don't do this style well
Favorite tracks: Glass Houses, Broken Youth, The Letdown, Reprise, The Fountain | 4 | | Dayshell Nexus
Alternative Rock/Metal
Waiting three years for this record to come out was totally worth it. Not only did Shayley come up with more diverse melodies in his singing, but his guitar work improved drastically. The bassist continues to be one of the strongest components of the music, with the new drummer keeping up with the former in terms of skill and style
Favorite Tracks: Improvise, The Weapon, Spit In The Face, Digital Sand | 5 | | Crystal Lake True North
Metalcore/Hardcore
The boys from Japan are back for their fifth record, and they brought their best album to date. Ryo's vocals sound the best that they ever have; his lows are deeper and have more full sound, his mids are stronger, and his singing has improved. Guitars are more of the same, shifting from fast power chord riffs, to melodic leads in every song.
Favorite tracks: Omega, Hatred, Metro, True North, Waves | 6 | | Dance Gavin Dance Mothership
Post-Hardcore/DGDcore
Ah yes, the new DGD record. This album in particular seems to have a lot of fans split as to whether they love the album or hate the album. Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying how much better Tilian sounds on this album than his previous outings with the band. Will continues to amaze me with his guitar playing and songwriting, however it does feel too safe at times. It's certainly not Happiness, but good record nonetheless
Favorite tracks: Young Robot, Deception, Inspire The Liars, Betrayed By The Game, Man Of The Year | 7 | | Polyphia Renaissance
Instrumental/Progressive Rock
When this first came out I wasn't the biggest fan of this other than the singles and a couple of other tracks, but over the year it grew on me hard. Tim and Scott keep on improving with their guitar playing and songwriting, and Clay's bass work is drastically improved from their last album Muse, playing more of his own bass lines rather than just following Tim and Scott. Drums provided by Brandon are a little too calm for my liking, but they work for the music. Too bad he left after the album was done
Favorite tracks: Light, Storm, Bittersweet, Crush, Euphoria | 8 | | Architects All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us
Metalcore/Progressive Metal
Another album that grew on me as the year went by, due to the sad circumstances surrounding the death of their guitarist Tom. I revisited the album and found a deep respect for the album, and the lyrics hit even harder since his passing. As usual, Sam's vocals sound amazing, as he has fine-tuned the pitch screaming technique that he uses oh so well. Great guitar playing, great drum work, and haunting lyrics.
Favorite tracks: Nihilist, Phantom Fear, Downfall, Gravity, Memento Mori | 9 | | Normandie Inguz
Alternative Rock/Post-Hardcore
For a band that started as a run-of-the-mill metalcore band, it was a great surprise to hear sucha drastic change in sound. The guy who did the unclean vocals left the band, leaving the clean vocalist to do all of the work, which was such a blessing. Philip Strand was always the best part of the band because of his phenomenal singing voice, and it's put to the forefront of the music on this album. He does his fair share of screams on this album as well, and they sound pretty good, and with time they'll only improve.
Favorite tracks: Awakening, Believe, Calling, The Storm | 10 | | Polaris (AUS) The Guilt & The Grief
Progressive Metalcore
Australians really know how to make the metalcore that I love. This EP is in the same vein as older Northlane, and even has a guest spot from Marcus Bridge (he always sounds better on guest spots rather than in his actual band lmao)
Favorite tracks: Regress, Voiceless, Hold You Under | 11 | | Shokran Exodus
Deathcore/Progressive Metal
