| Regarding Shelved Albums
In the past couple of months, two bands/artists I listen to, Against the Current and Kim Petras, had an EP and an album respectively shelved by their record labels. This has caused me to become increasingly more interested in the stories behind shelved albums, as well as the content of the albums themselves (there's an allure to music that is not easily accessible). So I'm making this list to ask you all if you know of any shelved albums, whether or not they have ever been released (either offically or via a leak), and to give any context you know of as to why the album was shelved. | 1 | | Against The Current Fever | 2 | | Kim Petras Slut Pop | 3 | | I Set My Friends On Fire Astral Rejection | 4 | | I Set My Friends On Fire Astral Rejection (OG) | |

12.03.22 | david bowie's "toy" album was shelved for like 20 years and was finally officially released like last year i think (though it did kind of exist already in leak form). the album is basically big budget re-recordings of various songs of his from the 60s. record label thought it was stupid and coming off the commercially not so successful "hours" they were basically like try again pal and then he made "heathen"
his "diamond dogs" album was supposed to be an entire musical rendition of george orwell's "1984" but had to be heavily altered after he couldn't get the rights (a few tracks from the original made it to the diamond dogs album, most obviously "1984" and "big brother"). don't think its known whether the original album still exists today
lastly, he made an album called "the gouster" in between diamond dogs and young americans that was shelved for reasons i don't entirely remember. its basically young americans with a few different tracks swapped in and out (most notably "fame" had not been written yet) and entirely different more stripped back arrangements. the album does exist today though still not officially released, and the demos for it were released as part one of those "eras" boxsets his estate has been putting these past couple years... also can hear some of the unreleased songs on some of the live albums from that period
also recalled he got like 90% through making "outside 2" but got bored with the concept and made earthling instead | Get Low
12.04.22 | Not even surprised to hear Bowie has a collection of shelved stuff |
