Round 2: Sharkattacks Continental Rec Tournament

Ok so round 1 was a doozy and big congratulations to Divaman for coming out of nowhere with a super underdog rec that somehow came out on top amongst a list stacked with heavy hitters. This one should be a bit harder though as we are now going to find the best albums from the Latin jungle South America. I’m not very well-versed in the region myself (although I know a bit) so let’s hope we all learn a little something here. I’m stealing tacos great idea and granting a .1 handicap to round winners which can be used at any time. Keep the records under an hour if you can and let’s get to reccin’!
1Los Diablos Rojos
Paseo Tropical

So for my hint I’m giving you this great chicha band! I doubt many of you know since I had to add it to the database. If you don’t know what chicha music is it’s like psychedelic Cumbia specifically from Peru. If you don’t know what Cumbia is well Wikipedia that shit or something.

I was feeling pretty eh about this at first. The first two songs are pretty breezy and float by in a pleasant but rather innocuous way. It wasn’t until I heard the third track that I started to get into to it. Still it took me a few listens to get the kind of feel and mood this guy is going for. He most certainly does succeed at his goal in creating soothing but rhythmically rich little songs that are as relaxing as they are intriguing. Even though this album enters in the game a little shy and unassuming at first it has enough character and plenty of great songs to keep me jamming this thing more and more. I can safely play this when the inlaws are in town and still enjoy it.

Damn for someone who was so apprehensive to this list at first you really swung for the fences there bud. This album is all over the place both in song structure and production. Some songs are almost just studio ambience, a simple guitar line, and vocals. Other songs with jump around from noisy riffs to bubblegum pop. Extremely varied instrumentation both in style and types being used. Definitely a late 60s album. The initial shock from how layered and stacked this record is creates a very wide-eyed perception at first. Then you get over all the studio trickery and it’s South American-styled brand of 60s psychedelic rock. After that, all you are left with is a bunch of great songs and beautiful vocal harmonies.

4Systema Solar
Rumbo A Tierra

Divaman

Colombia 🇨🇴

Every single song here is a fucking banger. Each track could theoretically be used in a Seth Rogan film where there is a montage of party shots. Scenes where everyone is drinking and smoking and having fun. Only one song here is in a minor key and the song still grooves like a motherfucker. Although there doesn’t appear to be a lot of depth to this record it doesn’t really matter because you can just dance and forgot all your worries. Doesn’t get tiresome but ends right when you’ve had your fill.

Papa universe

This band rides the fence between punk and post-punk in an ass-kicking but artistically satisfying way. Superbly pissed off and dripping with style. I want to know the language just so I can learn these lyrics. The short length serves the band well (as most albums do in my opinion) and this thing blows by in a stomping rage. Unlike Systema Solar though, it leaves you wanting more from these group of humans. If there was a runner up spot this would win it.

Butcherboy

More of a punk record not that dissimilar to The Ramones. Lots of fast songs and power chords. I’m into it, and I do keep liking it the more I hear it. It doesn’t get me too excited though as I have heard plenty of bands like this. Some better, some worse. Although they are a little more experimental than your average punk band, I’ll give them that. It’s fun and I’ll definitely come back to it.

This thing comes at you pretty wild at first. It’s noisy and all over the map. Jagged electronic beats are being pummeled. Effects-laden vocals are distorting and squirming in all directions. However, this thing isn’t as anti-social as it thinks it is and eventually smooths out a bit towards the second half. Definitely an interesting and original sound. I was on the edge of my seat with this record. The songs are unpredictable and experimental. While still not really my thing I enjoy this record more than I don’t. Again, the short length benefits this album greatly.

I almost like this lady’s style. She’s all suave and classy. It’s exotic but very expensive. But it almost seemed to Americanized for me or something. Sure the songs are catchy, they are fun and danceable. The vocals are not only adequate but quite good. How is this different than most pop on the radio? This is actually much better pop than most to be honest. I’d much rather here this than a Taylor Swift or a Beyoncé. I do think it’s pretty good but this type of album can’t survive in a list this packed with quality material.

Huskerdune

Brazil 🇧🇷

I’m pretty into this. Very heavy in mood. The vocals hold a lot of weight. The sound blend lots of traditional instruments such as strings, guitar, and bass. Despite that there is a electronic undercurrent that really helps these songs feel fresh. Synths wash over programmed drums and organic sounds mixed with live drums and none of it sounds out of place. This whole record is bursting with originality but completely real and raw. It’s personal as hell even with the language barrier. Gritty as fuck vocals with plenty of character that can express emotion without lyrics. I love the sound too. Lots of twists and turns and styles being employed but it all sounds cohesive and flows well in the context of the record.

Argentina 🇦🇷

This was described as the Radiohead of Argentina but I think it more closely resembles U2. That’s a bad thing believe it or not. I like Radiohead as much as the next guy. Not my favorite but I definitely like them more than U2. This record lies somewhere in between that. You get some pretty cool guitar tones and the guitarist is certainly more enjoyable to listen to than The Edge. It all sounds a little too pop rock or new wave or something for me though. Really couldn’t get into it the whole time. Not bad musicians by any means and some songs actually got me going a bit such as the third track. I could maybe see other albums tickling my fancy but the clean 80s style pop rock and lack of any real excitement brewing around this thing forces me to cut it loose.

SCREAM!

Chile 🇨🇱

Wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. It was described as both prog and folk simultaneously. I’m not too into either of those genres but this somehow worked. I think this sounds like both those genres but manages to blend them in a way that is both compelling and ambitious. Risky business maybe but ultimately it sounded good to my ears. And that’s all you need to survive to the next continent.
