| Godflesh - Purge RANKED
Now that the dust has settled, we should look back on Purge to see what enters the Godflesh hall of fame and what does not. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk. | 1 | | Godflesh Purge
1. Nero
The first single and the one everyone got to hear before the album dropped. It was very encouraging, signaling the return of the hip-hop sound that's been missing in Godflesh for a while. In the context of the album however, it comes across like a lightweight when followed by the two heavy hitters, which do everything Nero tries, but better. Defo check out the dub remix of it though, it's elevated a lot by that.
7/10 | 2 | | Godflesh Purge
2. Land Lord
Oh yeah, now we're talking! This one comes out of the gate swinging, with a loud, brash hip-hop groove and a driving, evil fucking riff by Justin to ride on top of it. The vocal effects work brilliantly and I feel battered by the time it's over. Benny's bass being a little higher in the mix would push this up and beyond (an issue with the album mixing in general, really), but as this stand, Land Lord beats you up and takes your lunch money.
10/10 just like a real land lord | 3 | | Godflesh Purge
3. Army Of Non
And it doesn't let up! Army Of Non is kinda more of the same, but if that same is so good as it is, then it's a good call. The hip-hop influence is at its zenith, with a Jeru the Damaja sample fairly prominent in the mix. This and Land Lord before it bravely rub shoulder with the best of Godflesh hip-hop heavy tracks like Mothra.
10/10 I wish I could live in that intro forever. | 4 | | Godflesh Purge
4. Lazarus Leper
Probably a smart idea to mix things up a bit, the atmosphere switches to more Streetcleaner than Pure. The snare is driving the rhythm of this track much like Pulp and it worked great then and it works great now. One of the harshest, most misanthropic feeling tracks on this album.
9/10 | 5 | | Godflesh Purge
5. Permission
I liked it a lot more first time than I do now. It doesn't have the same staying power beyond the novelty of being transported back to Us And Them. Still, for all it is, it's a good way to keep up the flow of the album.
6/10 | 6 | | Godflesh Purge
6. The Father
The Dud more like it. I don't know, it doesn't only feel like an unfinished Godflesh track, it feels like an unfinished Jesu track. I can dig that he's trying to go for a bare bones feel on this one but it does nothing for me.
3/10 | 7 | | Godflesh Purge
7. Mythology Of Self
Back to basics with this Swans tribute. Do what you do best and this definitely does that. A slow industrial sludge that is a missing hook and slightly clangier production away from being a classic on this album.
8/10 | 8 | | Godflesh Purge
8. You Are The Judge, Jury and The Executioner
From that very first harmonic squeal you can tell, that this is going to be something special. Once the slow ride bell starts dictating a nihilistic march tempo, you're completely drawn in. Justin's vocals come at you like a tsunami and when the guitar soars high, Benny's bass gets room to breathe in an all-timer Godflesh groove. A post-metal masterpiece that rivals Go Spread Your Wings. My only complaint is that it isn't longer.
11/10 True Godflesh all-timer. | |

08.27.23 | Your ranking threw me off at first sight because I didn’t realize it’s ordered like the track listing and not your ranking ha. Solid ratings, closer is definitely the peak. Permission is great though, hopefully you come back around on it | kkarron
08.27.23 | Aye, it's a cool one, and Godflesh tracks are in a constant flux where some of them come back around to me again after a while. |
