A Sample of DinosaurJones
Just jamming with my iPod on random at work today, and covertly playing Hearthstone on my phone. Not planning on skipping anything. There's some stuff on here that I don't really like anymore, this might help me do some pruning. I'll do this for a few hours. I started the list at 6:30 AM EST.
Also, I had the title as "A Sample of Dinosaur," but I had to add the Jones because there's a user named Dinosaur on this site that is much more trve kvlt than I am. |
1 | | Radiohead In Rainbows
All I Need
To be fair, Radiohead is one of those bands that I've never really gotten into. I've listened to a lot of their stuff, but it's never really clicked for me like it has seemed to for many others. That said, I really dig this song. |
2 | | Five Iron Frenzy All The Hype That Money Can Buy
Four-Fifty-One
A band that I feel is criminally underrated. I know that Ska is a niche genre, but damn, FIF just plays some feel-good music. They can get a little preachy, which might turn people off, but overall a very good band. |
3 | | New Found Glory Coming Home
Pain And Love
Not their best album, but there's definitely some good stuff on here. They pull of the "mature" sound much better here than on Catalyst, which was kind of a train wreck. Probably one of the better songs on the album, along with the title track. |
4 | | Funeral for a Friend Hours
History
I NEVER GOT TO SEE THEM LIVE. Damn. |
5 | | Lucius Good Grief
Dusty Trails
These girls are amazing singers. Unfortunately, this album is produced so razor sharp and sleek that it kind of ruins it. It needs more grit and punch. I suggest checking out their Tiny Desk Concert to really see what they can do. While the album is okay, they shine much more in a live setting.
A band I discovered because of Sowing. Surprise, surprise. |
6 | | Stick To Your Guns Diamond
Such Pain
These guys have really improved a lot since their early bro-core days. They're not amazing by any means, but I find their brand of inspiration-core to be pretty appealing, for some reason. |
7 | | Carly Rae Jepsen E MO TION
Gimmie Love
I am unabashedly in love with this woman. I am unabashedly in love with this album. What a shining gem of pop music. |
8 | | Jamiroquai Rock Dust Light Star
Angeline
Jay Kay has such a wonderfully smooth voice. This band still kills it. |
9 | | 311 From Chaos
Champagne
A band I used to be way more into than I am now. They still have some good jams, but they're very much a band that has been doing the same thing forever, and peaked about 16 years ago. |
10 | | Stone Temple Pilots Core
Crackerman
RIP Scott Weiland. STP were always a great band. Velvet Revolver... not so much. |
11 | | Mogwai EP+6
Rollerball
Mogwai have always been a bit hit-or-miss, but for the most part play a solid brand of post-rock. I tend to prefer their more peaceful tracks, personally. |
12 | | From Autumn To Ashes Holding A Wolf By The Ears
Underpass Tutorial
A band that I have their entire discography, but haven't really listened to. This song is pretty decent. Might have to finally give them more of a listen. |
13 | | CocoRosie Noah's Ark
Bear Hides and Buffalo
Probably one of the more eclectic artists I like, since I am extremely basic. But I just find something about them very appealing. |
14 | | James Brown The Godfather: The Very Best of...
It's a Man's Man's Man's World
James Brown is just classic. Gotta love James Brown. He may have been slightly insane, but a great musician nonetheless. |
15 | | The Chicharones Swine Flew
Banker's Bonanza
An underrated rap group, IMO. I got to see them live opening up for Streetlight Manifesto, and they were great. |
16 | | Between the Buried and Me Alaska
Alaska
A band that's gone downhill, IMO. Not that their current output is terrible, but it used to be better for sure. Selkies still best BTBAM. |
17 | | Creed Human Clay
Beautiful.
hahaha... nope. Found one to prune. I used to like Creed for the music, but now Alter Bridge and Tremonti exist, so I don't have to give a crap about Creed anymore. They're not as bad as they get a rap for, but also not great, for sure. They're kind of like a better Nickelback. |
18 | | Matisyahu Youth
Fire of Heaven/Altar of Earth
I used to think Matisyahu was way more of a gimmick, but he's proven me wrong with a respectable discography. I think I prefer his earlier, more reggae-oriented work though. |
19 | | Zebrahead MFZB
Over the Edge
I was super into this band about 10 years ago. But they're really just... not that good. They've got a few good songs though. This album is all right. But yeah, I might get rid of this one. |
20 | | Daft Punk Homework
Teachers
I love Daft Punk, but I've always found Homework a little too vanilla for me. |
21 | | Steve Vai Passion and Warfare
Sisters
I used to be way more into virtuoso guitar players like Satriani and Vai. And while they're obviously skilled, I just don't find myself enjoying this style of guitar playing or music as much anymore. |
22 | | Portugal. The Man Church Mouth
Telling Tellers Telling Me
I have nothing interesting to say about this one. It's a groovy track. I enjoy it. |
23 | | Death Cab for Cutie We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes
Company Calls
I have a man crush on Ben Gibbard. |
24 | | The Littlest Man Band Better Book Ends
Always Saying
Scott Klopfenstein was the unsung hero of Reel Big Fish. The Littlest Man Band seems him in a much more laid-back, mellow vibe. It's a nice change of pace. |
25 | | The Strokes First Impressions of Earth
Juicebox
WHY WON'T YOU COME OVER HEEERRRRE. What an infectious groove. |
26 | | Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication
Get On Top
I love this album, but Jesus, the production on it is terrible. This is the album that made me pick up guitar and bass though. |
27 | | The Darkness One Way Ticket To Hell And Back
One Way Ticket
I loved their first album. This one... not so much... |
28 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Jesus Christ
Good album. I don't think it's the holy grail like Sput, but it's definitely good. |
29 | | The Postal Service Give Up
Clark Gable
I have a man crush on Ben Gibbard [2] |
30 | | Explosions in the Sky The Rescue
Day 5
One of my favorite bands. I can see why other people would find them not so compelling, but I adore them. |
31 | | Billy Joel Piano Man
Ain't No Crime
I love Billy Joel. I feel like he's an artist that's kind of forgotten about. His material started to get a little... lacking near the tail end of his recording career, but he's got so many quality songs and albums. |
32 | | Blue Sky Black Death NOIR
Fire For Light
Another band that I feel is underrated, though I can understand that it wouldn't be everyone's style. I really dig them. I enjoy instrumental music quite a bit, and they make some tasty beats. |
33 | | Devin Townsend Project Addicted
Numbered!
It's very hard to describe Devin Townsend. He seems to be very polarizing though, as I know a lot of people that say he's a love him or hate him kind of musician. Luckily, most of the people I know love him.
Shoutout to AtomicWaste, who is the reason I listen to so much Devin Townsend. |
34 | | Steve Vai Flex-Able
Bledsoe Blvd.
Again. Super talented. Just really not my cup of tea anymore. |
35 | | Deftones Saturday Night Wrist
Kimdracula
This is a band that I only really got into because of Sput. I'm glad I did though. Saturday Night Wrist is possibly my favorite 'Tones album. |
36 | | Bruce Springsteen The Rising
You're Missing
I have a couple of friends from New Jersey that say you're either a Bon Jovi guy or a Springsteen guy. I've gotta say, I'm a much bigger fan of the Boss, personally. |
37 | | Scale the Summit The Collective
Black Hills
I love Scale the Summit. They write some of the most triumphant sounding music I've ever heard. There are so many moments that just make me feel good, in general. I'm pretty sure that this album is my favorite of theirs. Its unfortunate that they're probably done as a band now.
The bass is audible and played very tastefully, which is a gigantic point in their favor. |
38 | | Yellowcard Southern Air
Rivertown Blues
I love Yellowcard. I pretty much grew up listening to them, since I was 12 or so. I'm 27 now, so... yeah. I still haven't listened to their self-titled, probably because I don't want it to be over. For the same reason that I usually stop right at the end of video games, or have trouble finishing books or TV series that I really like. I don't want it to end.
That said, this may be my favorite Yellowcard album. Hard to say though, I love them all. |
39 | | Glassjaw Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence
Motel of the White Locust.
I remember the first time I heard this album. The reason I got it is because I was in love with Finch's "What It Is to Burn." In the liner notes, they thanked Glassjaw for "being the best fucking band ever." I think I was 13 or so when I first heard this.
It was an eye-opening experience for me. It was honestly too much for me at that age. I put it away. And a few years later, when I was filled with plenty of teenage angst, I pulled it out again. I still can't relate to everything on it, but damn, do I appreciate it. I may prefer their later work, but this album is still wonderful. |
40 | | The Aquabats Myths, Legends and Other. . . Adventures
Pizza Day
The Aquabats are one of the most fun bands around. You should love the Aquabats. Unless you take yourself too seriously and hate fun. |
41 | | Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fever To Tell
Black Tongue
I'll admit it, I only have this album because of "Maps." On the other hand, this song is pretty great. I'm sure if I sat down to take the time to listen to the entire album, I'd enjoy it thoroughly. |
42 | | The Antlers Familiars
Revisited
I couldn't tell you what my favorite Antlers album is. I used to say Burst Apart, but every time I listen to Familiars, it grows on me more and more. There's such a subdued beauty to this album.
Hospice is great, but it's a heavy listen, and not one that I find myself wanting to listen to very often. Unless I feel like weeping. |
43 | | The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Question the Answers
Kinder Words
Ah, yes. One of the pioneers of "ska-core." I think it has more to do with how Dicky Barrett sounds like he gargles gravel on the daily. Their more aggressive style was greatly appreciated at the time though. |
44 | | Owl City Ocean Eyes
Butterfly Wings
Harmless, vaguely electronic pop. Hopelessly saccharine.
A huge ripoff of the Postal Service. Most of this is pretty forgettable, including this song, but there are a few good ones, such as "Cave In" or "Hello Seattle." |
45 | | John Frusciante Curtains
The Real
A far cry from some of his earlier solo work, and pretty different from his RHCP work as well. This album, as far as I know, was recorded in his living room, similar to "Smile From the Streets You Hold." I find this one much more listenable, however.
This album also contains my favorite solo Froosh song, "Anne." |
46 | | Devin Townsend Project Addicted
Bend It Like Bender!
Hey, another duplicate! I like this one much more than Steve Vai though. Also, Futurama is possibly my favorite show, so the shout out to Bender is always appreciated. |
47 | | The Killers Hot Fuss
On Top
Half of this album is good. Half of it is very non-descript, or just very bland. This is one of the better songs though, I think. I like the bass on this album though. |
48 | | Dustin Kensrue Thoughts That Float On A Different Blood
Round Here
This acoustic cover album is pretty good. And I absolutely adore this cover. I love the original song, but I feel like Dustin takes it to another level.
This one comes highly recommended. |
49 | | Blue Sky Black Death Slow Burning Lights
Tokyo Underground
Blue Sky Black Death are a very good band in general just to chill to, but this album in particular is great for that. The ethereal vocals from Yes Alexander just add to the dreamy feel that this album provides. |
50 | | 311 Grassroots
Homebrew
The best 311 album, IMO. These days though, that's not saying much. On the other hand, at least there was some aggression in their earlier work, whereas they feel like they've been phoning it in for about 10 years now. |
51 | | The Decemberists What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World
The Singer Addresses His Audience
Sometimes I feel like Colin Meloy is just a more folky Ben Gibbard. or Ben Gibbard is a more contemporary Colin Meloy. |
52 | | The Antlers Burst Apart
Hounds
I got to see the Antlers live several years ago when they opened up for Explosions in the Sky. I bought Burst Apart in vinyl there. I wish I could have gotten it signed.
Seeing the Antlers live was almost like an out of body experience. So dreamy, ethereal, relaxing, and beautiful. |
53 | | Audioslave Out of Exile
#1 Zero
Audioslave could never live up to the hype, as is the common case with most "supergroups." Their first album was all right, if a bit bloated. I feel like Out of Exile was the height of their career though.
Songs such as #1 Zero, the Worm, and the Curse are great slow burners that explode with energy, before settling back into their gloomy, beginning fill. They made some good music on their own, without living off of past success. |
54 | | Blue Sky Black Death Late Night Cinema
Legacy to Fuel
I LIKE BLUE SKY BLACK DEATH, CAN YOU TELL?
Also, I mentioned that I'm playing Hearthstone... I don't know if anyone else here plays, but goddamn, I am fining Shaman to just be the most bullshit class right now. I've just gotten back into it after months of not playing, and I used to hate mages, but now Shamans are my bane. |
55 | | Nobuo Uematsu Final Fantasy VII Piano Collections
Gold Saucer
The piano collections made for the Final Fantasy games are absolutely great. I love the Gold saucer theme. I occasionally just find myself whistling it idly when I'm working on stuff. |
56 | | Colin Stetson New History Warfare Vol 2: Judges
In Love and in Justice
I saw Colin Stetson open up for Godspeed You! Black Emperor several years ago. I had no idea who he was or what to expect. And he blew me away figuratively, and almost literally. This man can do otherworldly things with a saxophone. |
57 | | Manchester Orchestra Cope
Trees
I actually really liked what they did with Cope/Hope. I think I prefer Hope a bit more overall, but the punch with some of the songs on Cope is great. |
58 | | Dethklok The Doomstar Requiem
Morte Lumina
Let's be honest, Dethklok have always been ridiculous. And I actually really enjoyed Brendon Small stretching his wings creatively a bit with the Doomstar Requiem. Sure, the metal was great, but tracks like "Do It All For My Brother" and "Givin' Back to You" are super well done.
Morte Lumina, on the other hand, is just one hell of a victory song. Placing it in the actual story, it makes a lot sense. I wish there was more Metalocalypse, but if there never is, this was a good way to go out. |
59 | | Protest the Hero Kezia
No Stars Over Bethlehem
Damn, this band was so much better when Arif was writing the lyrics. |
60 | | Trapt Trapt
Stories
I don't find this album to be all that great anymore. I thought it was great when I was in like... 7th grade though. This is still one of the better songs from it for sure though. I used to play it in coffee houses back in college. |
61 | | The Dangerous Summer Reach For The Sun
A Space to Grow
I love the Dangerous Summer. They kind of make think of what the Hold Steady might sound like if their singer actually sang. But yes, the Dangerous Summer wrote some damn good music, and never got the appreciation they deserved, I feel.
They have some truly massive choruses. |
62 | | BABYMETAL Metal Resistance
No Rain, No Rainbow
I don't know Japanese at all. I also don't listen to much metal. I still love BABYMETAL though. The music is fun and infectious. Though this ballad leaves a little to be desired, to be sure. Maybe I'd enjoy it more if I knew what she was saying. |
63 | | The Mars Volta The Bedlam in Goliath
Ouroboros
People always talk about De-Loused and Frances, but I think this album is great. Reading the story behind the album is also interesting, as the band feels like they were "cursed" while recording it, having a string of terrible luck and shitty events happen during the recording process.
After reading about it, one of my friends won't even listen to the album, stating that it creeps her out. |
64 | | The Avalanches Wildflower
Frankie Sinatra
Another album that I feel could never live up to the hype, they did a damn admirable job. Personally, I enjoy the album as much, or nearly as much as SILY. A lot of people don't seem to enjoy this track very much either, but I like it quite a bit. It's definitely quirky. Given how much Sput loves Danny Brown and MF DOOM, I would have expected this song to be better received. |
65 | | Sufjan Stevens Illinois
The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts
The first Sufjan Stevens album I ever heard, and still my favorite. Carrie and Lowell comes close, but this is still tops for me. |
66 | | Dethklok Dethalbum III
I Ejaculate Fire
While I think this song is actually pretty damn good, I find this album as a whole pretty lacking. Maybe it's the lack of tie-ins with the show, but there's something about it that never clicked with me as much as the others. |
67 | | Lionize Destruction Manual
Dumb & Dangerous
I got to see Lionize live at the same show I saw the Chicharones and Streetlight. Lionize are a band that needs far more love than they get. A soulful, groovy mix of reggae and blues, they are phenomenal.
Plus the lead singer has got some pipes. Tim Sult from Clutch shows up on a lot of their albums, this one included. |
68 | | Fall Out Boy Infinity on High
I've Got All This Ringing In My Ears and None On My Fingers
Fall Out Boy still hadn't fallen out of their habit of stupid long song titles at this point yet. While Take This To Your Grave will probably always be my favorite FOB album, I can appreciate their steps towards a more pop-oriented sound.
Up until they broke up. I have not enjoyed much they've done since the reunion except for "Alone Together." That's a good song. |
69 | | Souleye PPPPPP
Passion for Exploring
Such a great soundtrack for a cool game. This album has so many groovy little chiptune jams. If you haven't played the game, do it. It's a super fun platformer. And if you don't want to, at least check out the soundtrack. it's very well done. |
70 | | Haywyre Two Fold - Part 2
Do You, Don't You
Monstercat has gotten huge since they started out 5 years ago. In my opinion, they've gotten worse, but there's still some good artists on the label. Haywyre is one of them for sure.
Two Fold Part 2 isn't as good as Part One, but there's still some good stuff on here. |
71 | | Protest the Hero Kezia
Nautical
Man, this band was so much better when Arif was writing the vocals [2] |
72 | | Zebrahead Waste of MFZB
Lightning Rod
I used to like this band so much I bought an album of their B-Sides. THEIR A-SIDES AREN'T EVEN THAT GOOD. |
73 | | The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Let's Face It
The Impression That I Get
If you grew up in the 90s, you know this song. And hopefully, you love it. |
74 | | Bomb the Music Industry! Vacation
Felt Just Like Vacation
Jeff Rosenstock is my spirit animal. |
75 | | Michael Jackson Blood On The Dancefloor: HIStory In The Mix
Morphine
Michael Jackson may have been a fucked up individual, allegations or not. But he was an amazing artist. |
76 | | Televisor Venture EP
Deluxe
I had to add this to the database myself. Finally, something somewhat obscure?
If you enjoy funky music, check out Televisor. It falls under the EDM umbrella, and the subgenre is Nu-Disco, but that sounds stupid. It's just catchy and fun.
Recommended for fans of Daft Punk |
77 | | Reel Big Fish We're Not Happy 'Till You're Not Happy
The Bad Guy
The first band I was a part of back in High School was an 8-person ska band. I played guitar and keyboard. We used to cover this song. Good times. |
78 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Yanqui U.X.O.
Motherfucker=Redeemer (Part One)
I tend not to listen to this one as much, as it gets overshadowed by Lift Yr Skinny Fists and F#A#, but this is still amazing.
Good timing, too, as this song is about 20 minutes long and took up most of my lunch break. |
79 | | Trivium Ascendancy
Ascendancy
I actually got into this band because of my ex-girlfriend, a long ass time ago. She was like "Can you play this song on guitar?" And I was all "Of course I can, baby." Except I never called her baby. And I couldn't play this song. At least not at the time. I could probably handle it now.
Good song, at least. |
80 | | All That Remains For We Are Many
For We Are Many
Huh, I guess my iPod wanted to go on a Metalcore kick. What the hell happened to this band? |
81 | | 65daysofstatic The Destruction of Small Ideas
Primer
65daysofstatic is love, 65daysofstatic is life |
82 | | Mad Caddies Keep It Going
Pyramid Scheme
Probably the worst Caddies album, IMO. Not the best note to go out on, so I was very pleased when they released Dirty Rice just a few years ago, which was a much more satisfactory album. |
83 | | The Dear Hunter Act V: Hymns With The Devil In Confessional
A Beginning
Quite possibly my AOTY 2016. This isn't meant to be a 2016 list, clearly. But it would have to be either this or WORRY. by Jeff Rosenstock.
Phenomenal album. |
84 | | Eric Clapton Pilgrim
Fall Like Rain
Wow, what a boring ass album. Clapton's solo discography really leaves a lot to be desired. |
85 | | The Black Seeds Solid Ground
Bulletproof
Some chill ass reggae/dub from New Zealand. Fun fact: Bret from Flight of the Conchords used to be in this band.
The song "One By One" was also used in an episode of Breaking Bad |
86 | | Madvillain Madvillainy
Great Day
Pretty choosy about rap in general, but I guess it should be no surprise that I think this is great. |
87 | | Coheed and Cambria The Afterman: Descension
Dark Side of Me
Bleh. Probably the worst Coheed, IMO. They're one of my favorite bands, but this was pretty disappointing to me. I even really dug the Color Before the Sun. But this half of the Afterman didn't do much for me. |
88 | | Modest Mouse We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
March Into the Sea
Isaac Brock's drunken ramblings are some of the best things that anyone can experience in life.
CLANG CLANG |
89 | | Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium
Turn It Again
Guys. Why did you have to make a double album? Seriously. This could have been so much better if you had trimmed the fat and released a single disc. So much unnecessary bloat.
This song would have made the cut, though. One of the better tracks. DAT SOLO. |
90 | | Rx Bandits Gemini, Her Majesty
Meow! Meow! Space Tiger
I love the Rx Bandits, and was very upset when they broke up a few years ago. Luckily, they reunited, and I was able to see them live, which I'd always wanted to do.
This album kind of flew under the radar, I feel. I consider it better than Mandala, which was too meandering, and about on par with And the Battle Begun. I miss the horns, but this is a great album. This is possibly my favorite track.
OH MY, OH MY...
SHE'S NOT COMING HOME |
91 | | Minus the Bear Infinity Overhead
Empty Party Rooms
An underrated album from a great band. This album is very low key, very similar to Planet of Ice, but it's unfair to compare it to that album, which is amazing.
Still though, this manages to beat the piss out of Omni, IMO |
92 | | System of a Down Hypnotize
Dreaming
NEW SOAD HYPE. If it's at least on par with these albums, I'll be satisfied. If they manage to blow us away after 10 years, I'll be amazed.
More Serj > Less Daron |
93 | | The National Boxer
Racing Like a Pro
I've seen people discussing the best 3 album runs from bands. We'd all be remiss to not mention The National's Boxer-High Violet run.
Absolutely stellar. 3 Amazing albums. |
94 | | Protest the Hero Scurrilous
Tandem
Man, this band was so much better when Arif was writing the lyrics [3]
Still an amazing band though. |
95 | | Mastodon Crack the Skye
Ghost of Karelia
Crack the Skye Mastodon = Best Mastodon, IMO. |
96 | | Amy Winehouse Back to Black
Valerie
I miss Amy Winehouse. She was an amazing singer. So unfortunate that she couldn't get her shit straightened out. |
97 | | Head Automatica Decadence
Brooklyn is Burning
It's so weird to listen to Glassjaw, and then Head Automatica.
Daryl Palumbo is a weird dude. |
98 | | A Tribe Called Quest The Low End Theory
Show Business
RIP Phife. 2016 sucked balls. |
99 | | Buckethead Electric Sea
Kansas Storm
Before Buckethead started going insane with his Pikes and put more work into his releases, he actually released some pretty damn good music. |
100 | | Explosions in the Sky Take Care, Take Care, Take Care
Trembling Hands
I remember when this song came out, I was so excited. EitS are one of my favorite bands. I also remember being thoroughly confused and disappointed when the song was only 3 and a half minutes long. THIS IS POST-ROCK, DAMMIT.
It makes a lot of sense though. They couldn't really take this one anywhere else, and kudos to them for realizing that. |
101 | | This Will Destroy You Young Mountain
The World Is Our _____
Oh hey, I made it to the end of the list. This is one of my absolute favorite songs in general, and definitely my favorite TWDY song. Their later work is a bit more drone-y, and a lot heavier. But this song is a beautiful expression of optimism and hope. Check it out, if you haven't heard it. |
|
