Favorite 2016 albums
Both a great and terrible year for music. Many losses yet many great albums too. List is albums I managed to check out and I liked at least for a few listens. Feel free to recommend any stuff. The middle part is a blur mostly because I moved them up and down ten times already (for example I just started listening to Whores - Gold). |
1 | | The Dear Hunter Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional
The most ambitious and consistent Act, I love it. |
2 | | David Bowie Blackstar
An amazing album. I still can't get over the fact he died. |
3 | | Chevelle The North Corridor
Great stuff, but it requires a certain mood to be truly rewarding |
4 | | Deftones Gore
Not as majestic as previous albums, but I keep going back at it and songs constantly get stuck in my head. |
5 | | Moby These Systems Are Failing
Nobody expected this from Moby and it delivers. A wake up call with matching music |
6 | | Underworld Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future
Lovely stuff, melodic and fun. |
7 | | Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool
Hauntingly beautiful. |
8 | | SUMA The Order of Things
Heavy as fuck. |
9 | | Thrice To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere
The only album of theirs I dug so far. |
10 | | Swans The Glowing Man
Seeing them live only confirmed me how great they are. |
11 | | Motorpsycho Here Be Monsters
Lovely hippie/summery vibe. |
12 | | Red Hot Chili Peppers The Getaway
Some songs are darker, some were the soundtrack to my holiday at the sea. Great album nevertheless. |
13 | | Filter Crazy Eyes
Richard finally went out of his comfort zone and released something less conventional. |
14 | | Gozu Revival
Bad ass attitude. |
15 | | Ulver ATGCLVLSSCAP
More engaging than previous stuff, I like it. |
16 | | Causa Sui Return To Sky
They can't go wrong. |
17 | | Nine Inch Nails Not the Actual Events
Very late addition. Great EP as a whole. |
18 | | Conan Revengeance
Brutal! |
19 | | Opeth Sorceress
The best of the prog series so far. More powerful, however, I would love to hear again something similar to Ghost Reveries. |
20 | | Zaum Eidolon
A darker sequel, I admire the attention to the atmospheric details. |
21 | | Yawning Man Historical Graffiti |
22 | | Khemmis Hunted |
23 | | Beastwars The Death of All Things
Too bad this is probably their last album... |
24 | | The Brian Jonestown Massacre Third World Pyramid
The easiest digestible BJM record. |
25 | | Hammock Everything and Nothing
I am still amazed how these guys manage to release 70+ minute albums and make them so easy to listen as a whole. |
26 | | Chihei Hatakeyama and Dirk Serries The Storm Of Silence
A soothing ambient listen. |
27 | | Zippo After Us
I recently fell in love with this again after seeing them live. It's much better than the rating on the website. |
28 | | Wilco Schmilco
A different side of Wilco. I like the sarcastic, pessimist attitude. |
29 | | Bat For Lashes The Bride
God she's so hot!!! |
30 | | Wo Fat Midnight Cometh
They could easily write groovy riffs during their sleep. |
31 | | Kayo Dot Plastic House on Base of Sky
Cool stuff but hard to get into. After seeing them live, everything clicked. |
32 | | The Pineapple Thief Your Wilderness
Good album. They should write some heavier songs from time to time though. |
34 | | Earth Ship Hollowed |
35 | | Green Day Revolution Radio
I like this. If only Billie wrote better lyrics... |
36 | | Tycho Epoch
Not as good as Awake, but a cool record. |
37 | | Lionize The Voyage
Too bad it's only an EP. |
38 | | Chihei Hatakeyama Coastal Railroads in Memories
Another soothing ambient listen. |
39 | | Tim Hecker Love Streams
I recently started listening to his music. I like it. |
40 | | Throttlerod Turncoat |
41 | | Inter Arma Paradise Gallows |
42 | | Santana Santana IV
Better than expected. Still, a bit too long for its own good. |
43 | | Church of the Cosmic Skull Is Satan Real? |
44 | | Wes Borland Crystal Machete
I hope Black Light Burns is not dead yet. |
45 | | Buckethead Buildor
There are no big highlights within the Pikes this year, however, some of them are great. |
46 | | Primal Scream Chaosmosis |
47 | | Marsen Jules Shadows In Time
More soothing ambient. |
48 | | Mogwai Atomic |
49 | | Metallica Hardwired... to Self-Destruct
I recently had time to listen more to it. It's great. However, Lars drags it down like always and it's a shame since Hetfield did his best. |
50 | | Demonauta Tierra del Fuego
Cool, fuzzy stoner. |
51 | | Christian Fennesz and Jim O'Rourke It's Hard for Me to Say I'm Sorry
Nice stuff. However, I want a new Fennesz album. |
52 | | Graves at Sea The Curse That Is |
53 | | Haken Affinity
A bit cheesy, but cool stuff anyways. |
54 | | Tauusk Hunter |
55 | | Black Mountain IV |
56 | | Nosound Scintilla
Too bad it went unnoticed on Sputnik. |
57 | | Buckethead Florrmat |
58 | | New Keepers of the Water Towers Infernal Machine |
59 | | Explosions in the Sky The Wilderness
Not a big fan of these guys, but this is nice. |
60 | | Moby Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep.
Long journey, but does the job. Btw, it's free. |
61 | | Rob Zombie The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy...
The songs would've been better if they were developed more. Still, it has some fun moments. |
62 | | Valerinne Monumenta
Post rock apocalypse bonanza. Too long, but delivers. |
63 | | The Living End Shift
Lacks the catchiness of previous records. |
64 | | Caronte Codex Babalon |
65 | | Garbage Strange Little Birds
More of a guilty pleasure, I like listening to their stuff every once in a while. |
66 | | Blink-182 California
Better than expected, however Tom's departure left a big hole in the creative process. Still, Travis and Mark done a good job in bringing back that uplifting atmosphere. I wasn't a big fan of Neighborhoods, I think this is a step up. In the end, they should've continued as +44 and leave Blink behind. |
