AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | Was inspired to do this after seeing Distant Worlds live Saturday night. Truly incredible.
Recs for more modern stuff would be greatly appreciated. |
Hyperion1001
05.09.11 | Awesome list, Bach and Wagner have always been my favorite of the classic composers.
Howard Shore's scores are always phenomenal. Have you ever listened to Vangelis's score for Bladerunner? It rules. |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | I love Bladerunner, but I don't think I have the score downloaded, so thanks for reminding me. |
Crysis
05.09.11 | Tchaikovsky and Arnalds are my two favorites from here. |
Acanthus
05.09.11 | Sweet list, glad to see some John Cage love. |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | Yeah, the Russian composers have always been my favorites (primarily Tchaikovsky and Lidov). Their incorporation of Russian folk music throught some of thier symphonies and ballets are superb. |
Hyperion1001
05.09.11 | You should look up Iannis Xenakis's Metastaseis. It's an orchestra comprised of 61 players and none of them play the same part. It's mindblowing.
|
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | That sounds really awesome. |
Hyperion1001
05.09.11 | My favorite classical work has always been with choir. Krzysztof Penderecki's St. Luke Passion is probably the closest thing i've ever heard to the world ending with fire and brimstone.
|
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | I'm familiar with Penderecki, but I don't believe I've heard that particular piece.
Just realized I forgot Mussorgsky. Shit. |
Ovrot
05.09.11 | Carl Orff man...
|
Ovrot
05.09.11 | Also, fuck yeah for Gustav Holst |
Wolfhorde
05.09.11 | Damn, so much good stuff.
Modern stuff:
Roberto Cacciapaglia - Canone Degli Spazi and Ten Directions
Adam Hurst - Elegy
The 13th Warrior OST
Tan Dun - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
(If solo stuff is also acceptable:
Zoe Keating - One Cello x 16: Natoma
Fabrizio Paterlini - Viaggi In Aeromobile
Brian Crain - Piano Opus)

Yotimi
05.09.11 | Philip Glass and Steve Reich are great |
geng
05.09.11 | Amazing list. 32 might be the best thing in the history of music. |
ConsiderPhlebas
05.09.11 | Cool. I've only heard the really famous stuff off here, will check the rest. |
vanderb0b
05.09.11 | List is wonderful. Check out Verdi's requiem, it's pretty great.

demigod!
05.09.11 | wow dude, you know your shit. Props for that. |
Dreamflight
05.09.11 | Wagner is too low man, otherwise great list, totally agree with 1.
Have you heard Elliot Goldenthal's soundtrack for Final Fantasy: The SPirits Within? Amazing stuff too. |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | It's not ranked in any sort of way other putting a lot of the post-1910/20 composers in the latter half of the list.
I remember not caring for Spirits Within when I saw it, but I don't really remember much about the score. |
foreverendeared
05.09.11 | Chopin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Henryk Gorecki, Max Richter, and Carl Orff are prob my favorites.
Also, Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet by Nino Rota is SOOOO much better than the ballet version you have on here by Sergei Prokofiev. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z0__7sfNm0 |
Dreamflight
05.09.11 | Fair enough.:) I love the Spirits Within, so I might be biased, anyway you should really give that soundtrack a try. |
Pachelbel
05.09.11 | Great list. Bach, Chopin, Schubert and Wagner are my favorites. |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | Not Pachelbel lol? |
sniper
05.09.11 | no love for stravinksy and shostakovich? |
sniper
05.09.11 | nvm there's starvinsky. listen to some shostakovich string quartets dude they're mindblowing. have you listened to any shoenberg? |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | I'm pretty sure I've heard some of Shostakovich's work at some point, but never Shoenberg. I'll be sure and get on it. |
Bloodbirds
05.09.11 | John Powell - How To Train Your Dragon OST
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ei2HSGeLHo |
Bloodbirds
05.09.11 | Terry Riley - Requiem for Adam (Performed by Kronos Quartet)
Karlheinz Stockhausen - Klavierstücke, Gesang der Jünglinge |
sniper
05.09.11 | shoenberg is pretty wacky. shostakovich was some of the first really dissonant modern classical music that actually moved me. i've since fallen for a lot more, but he's awesome. you can really hear post-WWII russia in his compositions. |
Pachelbel
05.09.11 | Not Pachelbel lol?
^No :D
BTW I think Handel should have been included, Water Music Suite is amazing. |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | Yeah, I suppose forgetting Handel was a serious oversight. |
AngelofDeath
05.09.11 | Had the music to Ronfaure from FFXI stuck in my head all day. |
porch
05.09.11 | cool list |
balcaen
05.09.11 | dude i think 27 and 50 would have been bffs had they lived in the same time. mad props for including them |
BlackJesus
05.10.11 | i approve of this list |
AngelofDeath
05.10.11 | I think you're right. Satie was ahead of his time in both his inclination toward minimalism and ability to craft an atmosphere. |
wabbit
05.10.11 | holst- planets is probably my favourite.
Mass Effect 2 has my favourite of any video game |
AngelofDeath
05.10.11 | As far as video game soundtracks, I kept it to stuff that was more orchestral and less ambient or electronic. I could have easily filled this joker up with video game OSTs like Metroid Prime and ME2. Though, I guess ME2's has quite a bit of horn and string stuff. |
AngelofDeath
05.10.11 | Also, Tchaikovsky and I both have the same birthday (May 7, this past Saturday). |
Ovrot
05.10.11 | IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING!!!!!
