01.30.18 | I'm sure of two things 1)there are some scenes I've missed and 2)there is no "best" scene, each have their own unique and nuanced sound with their own sets of positive and negatives. |
DungeonBoy
01.30.18 | Norway, duh
but that documentary you watched, "One Man Metal", is excellent. Striborg was a bit much, but the other two were generally unsettling humans. |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | Norway, hunh? Going classic.
I agree on the One Man Metal bit. Malefic in particular seemed so awkward, like he had never interacted with other people before. It was really interesting to see how that mindset and persona translates to his form of black metal and the ideals he instills in his music. |

01.30.18 | I've been really into the French scene lately: BAN, Alcest (i know i know its blackgaze but we've discussed this ad nauseam), TGOO, Deathspell... to name a few. I really like a lot of American BM too but I'm taking a large task in immersing myself into the genre as a whole.. I feel like the viability of my input is limited. Either way I'll be watching this list closely.
Also what about Belgium/Netherlands? Maybe less total bm bands but some high quality ones. |
DungeonBoy
01.30.18 | @TheSpirit, yeah man listening to Xasthur after watching that had an impact on the music for me. Even though my favorite part was when he got all excited to see his cat for a moment, and then shifted back into total despondency.
To be a little less sentimental, the Icelandic black metal scene is really great at the moment. Svartidaudi, Nadra, and Zhrine are all really amazing bands. Bandcamp did a cool little write up of several Icelandic BM bands for anyone unfamiliar:

01.30.18 | No UK scene? |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | Hmmm forgot about the UK |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | @Dungeon - my favorite scene was when they were asking Malefic about his job history and he just got so uncomfortable and walked out of the room.
Also, I'd agree that Iceland is killing it lately. I think they along with the US are the two best scenes going at the moment.
@PJ - I'm actually not too familiar w/Belgium/Netherlands BM scene. I know it's there, but I honestly didn't even think to put it on here. I'll fix that now. |
BigPleb
01.30.18 | Cradle noiiiiiceeeee
Altar of Plagues rule hard also. |
Orb
01.30.18 | No love for Papua New Guinea? Da fuq |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | I'm gonna have to jump into the Icelandic scene. As long as it isn't lo-fi... |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | it's not particularly lo-fi, but there is a certain murkiness that has all the elements blending together |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | I can handle Portal's murk so I think I can handle murk. I just can't do the Nattens Madrigal levels of production quality.
Crucify me.
Also fuck yeah Saor m/ |
DungeonBoy
01.30.18 | @pjquinones if you're more into melodic pagan black metal check Nadra, if you want something more DSO check out Zhrine and Svartidaudi, but to be honest you'll probably dig all three |
SCREAM!
01.30.18 | I agree there is no real winner. Iceland is killing atm but that French style was likely largely influential on them, Norway is just chock full of classics, US has a bunch of micro scenes that individually rules, Canada has the famed Metal Noir Quebecois scene going
Man oh man |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | DSO? |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | Deathspell Omega |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | AH excuse my naivete. I am but a young lad. |
SCREAM!
01.30.18 | nah it's dungeon's fault he should've said DsO ;) |
foxblood
01.30.18 | idk who's the best i like it all. the US always has an excellent selection when it comes to almost any genre |
tastepolice
01.30.18 | Norway was great back in the day, Germany has had some great things throughout the years and Sweden and Finland are still shitting out some of the best bm.
Poland most overrated scene ever. France was only good because of LLN. |
foxblood
01.30.18 | man poland has some dope shit though |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | Oh shit, I forgot about Poland. Not a big fan of Graveland, but I do enjoy some Gontyna Kry.
I generally don't really think Swedish or German black metal is too exceptional but my favorite BM release this year is a German BM band, so maybe that's changing.
Finland has some straight filth coming out of it, which I love.
France has some other great stuff besides the LLN. Obvs DsO, BAN, Alcest (if you're into them), Epheles, etc... |
DungeonBoy
01.30.18 | Sorry for the Deathspell confusion, lol.
"Poland most overrated scene ever."
Are you referring to bands like MGLA and Batushka, because I'm not sure I'd lump Behemoth in that mix since they've been DM for like 20 years now. |

01.30.18 | Thy Worshiper Popiol - Introibo ad Altare Dei>>>> |
MoosechriS
01.30.18 | Portugal has thrown up some cool stuff in recent years. Black cilice, candelabrum, black howling, mons veneris, dolentia and a fair few others that escape my mind at the moment. |
MoosechriS
01.30.18 | But in terms of picking a favourite, i just couldn’t so much amazing stuff all over the world. Also that doc you watched is awesome, i stumbled onto it a while back randomly and it was really good. |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | Added Portugal!
Glad a good amount of you guys have also seen the documentary, i think it's essential for any (modern) BM Fan. |
foxblood
01.30.18 | i'll check it out, haven't seen it. you should check that thy worshiper album sometime it's beautiful. |

01.30.18 | Spirit was the German BM release from 2017 you're talking about the new Der Weg? |
DungeonBoy
01.30.18 | One of my favorites of 2017 |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | It's from this year, 2018 ;]
It's Verheerer - Maltrér |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | Ah yes I am stuck in the past.
That Der Weg was awesome though. |
TheSpirit
01.30.18 | i actually need to check that out still |
pjquinones747
01.30.18 | Made my 2017 AOTY list if that does anything for ya. |
TheSpirit
01.31.18 | It does!
Also, I really like their debut. |
