My Bandcamp Treasure Chest Pt.I

I was kind of late to the bandcamp party, but since I downloaded the app and really started taking advantage of it late last year it's become one of my main resources to discover music. Assuming I can motivate myself once a week, this will be an ongoing series sharing some of my favorite finds.
1Tebotjf
Pronounced "Tee-bot-jeff"

Existing somewhere between mathcore, screamo, and grind, these guys are a maelstrom of noodle riffs, erratic leads, cracked screams, and intense melodies. This was recorded in different sessions so the production and style slightly varies from song to song. You would think this would make for an incongruous listen, but it kind of matches their completely off the wall style. Think Dillinger Escape Plan meets Pretty Little Flower meets Failures and you have an idea of what this sounds like.
2Woddrea Mylenstede
Cwylmendeap

Another project from George Proctor (Sump, Mors Atra Crucis, White Medal, a literal million other bands) Woddrea Mylenstede is some of the most fucked up and barely listenable black metal I've ever heard, and I absolutely love it. It's very LLN inspired but not like ... Belketre or Vlad Tepes or a band you expect, it's something much closer to the sonic soup of Brenoritvrezorkre. The music has an eerie and entrancing ethereal quality to it and it's actually quite melodic at times, but my god the production is A W F U L. If you're not into uber raw black metal avoid; if you are, enjoy.
3To Destroy A City
Go Mirage

To Destroy A City refer to themselves as "cinematic rock" and while that's not exactly inaccurate, they're essentially just a post-rock band with vocals and lot of electronic bells and whistles (literally). I'm not exactly an expert on post-rock, but I did find this album very enjoyable and like the fact there's someone at the mic. To me this album feels very subdued and seems like it rather enjoys to dwell in the build than experience those cathartic peaks which can be a bit of turn-off at times. Still though, the music is very pretty and does have its moments of grandeur.
4Dark/Light
Kill Some Time

Coming to you from the excellent Dirt Cult Records, Kill Some Time is punk/alternative/surf rock album that also has a very distinct mid-western feel as well. A lot of tracks feature dual male/female vocals reminiscent of RVIVR. There's a lot of energy behind this album and musically, as you might have guessed by my previous description, it's quite adventurous, but never comes off as awkward or wrong. Beach Boys-esque riffs will sneak in next to a Nirvana-y bridge and somehow culminate in a Bad Religion sounding chorus, but it just sounds RIGHT. Definitely recommended to punk/alternative fans.
5Tyrannus
The Warden

Although I've always had a basic knowledge of dungeon synth and have heard works by Mortiis and well.... Mortiis, it wasn't until I started frequenting Bandcamp that I truly delved into the genre. Tyrannus' The Warden was one of the first albums I happened upon and I immediately fell in love. Not quite traditional DS, this record easily falls into the dungeon noise sect of the genre, which basically means listening to this is like stumbling around in a castle made of ear-splitting white noise. Even though I am a huge proponent of black noise, the static of this record ALMOST beat me. However I stuck around and eventually grew to enjoy my ears slowly being tortured. This mostly because The Warden is actually a very melodic and well-constructed record, it just so happens the melodies are dressed in twenty layers of violent hissing. Definitely recommended for noise fans but not for people who value their hearing.
6Kashyyyk
Demo

Not reinventing the wheel in any way, shape, or form, Kashyyyk's premiere demo sadly doesn't feature any Star Wars references, but is still a ripping screamo record. It's three songs that comprise of less than three minutes of music and while that seems disappointing, the demo feels oddly complete. The music is intense and very melodic and does a great job creating something memorable in such a short amount of time.
7Crusty Old Toad
Turn People Into Food

Okay listen, I was as WTF as you probably are right now, BUT I PROMISE this is worth at least one listen. It's surprisingly competent POST-BLACK METAL (another eye-brow raiser) with some of the best guitar harmonies I've heard from a black metal band in recent years. It can be a bit monotonous and "standard" black metal at times and the production isn't as powerful as I would like, but holy shit does this have some genuinely great moments.
8Ur Pale
Water Tombs & Crimson Horizons

Sea-faring new age/dungeon synth. It's absolutely gorgeous and oddly inspiring. It makes me want to jump into Pirates of the Caribbean and take the Black Pearl for a joyride. Seriously, this is the soundtrack for conquering the world.
9Remete (AUS)
Forgotten Aura

Sine he's put Woods of Desolation on hold, D has reformed Forest Mysticism (YAYYYY!) and formed two new projects, Unfelled and Remete, which solely performs instrumental black metal. I can't for the life of me figure out an Australian managed to capture such icy beauty, but here we are. There's something so palpably sad about this demo and even when it picks up in a wintry tempest it retains this sad, glacial beauty. I'm not usually a fan of purely instrumental music, but I can't get enough of this one.
10Mortespermia
CCCXXXIII

Hailing from Brazil, Mortespermia's frontman Grim (reallllll original buddy!) often spits out those ridiculous statements that go with any egotistical black metal musician, but he has the chops to back them up. CCCXXXII is raw black metal at it's finest; the playing is sloppy and out of time and the production is obviously a bit hard to handle, but there's just something so GENUINE about this release you want to keep coming back. Not to mention the playing, unkempt as it is, has some really original and impressive riffs. Is Grim secretly a genius? Probably not, but he can write one hell of black metal song.
