| Some More Awesome Stuff I Discovered Lately
Part 2, yo. | 1 | | Takako Minekawa Fun9
Laid-back and filled to the rim with brilliant pop licks, Minekawa's fourth full length album remains her most solid moment to date.
Recommended to fans of: Hikaru Utada, Cibo Matto. | 2 | | Kahimi Karie Trapeziste
While most of Karie's albums are indeed memorable, "Trapeziste" is arguably her finest album to date, as it wondrously balances
electronica and mellow avant-garde.
Recommended to fans of: Bjork, Bonnie Pink. | 3 | | B-Flower Clockwise
Jangly and glittery, B-Flower's fifth full length album is perhaps their best display of their unique bubblegum-alternative style.
Recommended to fans of: Teenage Fanclub, Pale Saints. | 4 | | Surround New Age
Creating an intriguing mixture of electropop, new wave, avant-garde and traditional hip hop, Surround (or ((((Surround))))) is
easily one of the most unique groups to break out of the Japanese underground in recent years.
Recommended to fans of: Yellow Magic Orchestra, Yello. | 5 | | Koji Kurumatani Wear Off
The first full length album under the alias of Air, Kurumatani whimsically executes his marvelous display of lo-fi shoegaze and
90's-esqued alternative. The end result leads "Wear Off" to be one of Kurumatani's finest moments, and one of Japan's best rock
albums of the 1990's.
Recommended to fans of: Cornelius, Ride. | 6 | | Grapevine Lifetime
A charming blend of melancholic alternative with some minor pop elements, the songs on "Lifetime" are full of atmosphere and
distortion. At only their second album, Grapevine reached their peak, commercially and critically.
Recommended to fans of: Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins. | 7 | | Yutaka Fukuoka Ur Words
With "Ur Words", Fukuoka managed to step out of the huge shadow of his former band, Pink, and deliver beautiful ambient-
esqued electronic tracks. Needless to say, descriptions fail to describe the album, and one must listen to it in order to fully
grasp its truly stunning nature.
Recommended to fans of: Susumu Hirasawa, Loscil. | 8 | | Berry Roll Put Up Your Dukes!!
Bubbly and fun as hell, Berry Roll's second album makes for a rather enjoyable audial sugar rush.
Recommended to fans of: No Doubt, The Muffs. | 9 | | United Bloody But Unbowed
One of the most influential groups in the Japanese underground thrash scene, United's debut album consists of progressive-like
elements with traditional heavy-thrash embedded into the mix as well. Undoubtedly a true Japanese heavy metal classic.
Recommended to fans of: Voivod, Anacrusis. | 10 | | Totsuzen Danball Kanshou Ongaku
After over two decades of activity, cult band Totsuzen Danball finally released its magnum opus in 1999 with "Kanshou Ongaku".
With "Kanshou Ongaku", Totsuzen Danball managed to cleverly contort their experimental psychedelic sound to highly addictive
levels: a feat which they never achieved before in their 22 years together, and one that they never could fully recapture either.
Recommended to fans of: Ween, Hikashu. | |

11.12.14 | In all honesty, I'm quite confident that fellow Sputnik's would be quite fascinated with #2. All the avant-garde glamour of Bjork, but with a heavier pop punch. Just brilliant. | discovolante
11.12.14 | Keyblade: Yeah, B-Flower's stuff is all really good. Really catchy 90's Japanese folk-inspired indie jangle pop. | Havey
11.12.14 | "you guys must not use rym, I've seen powernerds with >20000 there"

11.17.14 | is that girl on 2 like 8 yrs old ? | FadedSun
11.19.14 | Some cool stuff here. I liked Kahimi Karie. I listened to another album from Takako Minekawa and didn't hear anything related to Utada. It was way more out there. I liked it, but I was expecting something else based off you listing for fans of Utada. Maybe her newest album is more straight forward. | FadedSun
11.19.14 | I'm going to plug this band while I'm here, The Girl and The Robots. Electro-pop from Taiwan with female vocals. They need more attention out of Asia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDlp5MTHH10 | discovolante
11.27.14 | Faded: True, most of Minekawa's stuff is more experimental than Utada. But the melodic, electronic R&B-driven style of Fun9 definitely can be compared to Utada's style. |
