09.09.11 | I'm not the authority on this, but this is how I understand it: It's a combination of everything you do on this site. The number of reviews aren't as important as the quality of your writing, but it is still important to be consistent and show that you won't fall off the face of the earth immediately post-promotion. It is also about how you handle yourself on the site - how you handle criticism, how you interact with other users and the staff, what you contribute to the site outside of reviews (do you post news items regularly? do you make interesting music-related lists, or ones that get deleted every time?). Personally, I had around 70 reviews when I got promoted but it's not like there is a time frame...it kind of happens on a need-to-have basis, meaning that if a bunch of staff become inactive, it is probably time to place the emeritus tag on them and bump up some contributors or in rare cases, regular users. Typically, it seems this happens about once a year (?) but I'm basing that off the limited time I have seen since I have really only been active for 2 of my 3 years here and I have seen 2 batches of promotions over that stretch. Sometimes they also choose WHO to promote based on what types of genres/bands you review in order to try to keep the site balanced.
But as a whole, how good of a writer you are is probably the most significant determinant. |

09.09.11 | Back in the day it took about 20 reviews and you got it instantly, but in these days contributer got thrown around too much, became bloated and then the great purge took place. Forcing us to earn them again. However, that said I still feel the staff/contributing reviewer population is bloated but not that it really matters, seeking a internet title is pretty lame, something I learned over the years. |

09.09.11 | Basically what Sowing said. After the re-working of the contributor system, it took me until I had 100-something reviews to get the spot. But yeah, character, work ethic and simply overall writing quality is far more important than quantity. |

09.09.11 | I thought it was always the quality of your writing. When I think about it, Staff Writers on Sputnik are all really, really good. Technically sound of course, but more importantly they know what they're talking about.
My only real criticism of staff writers is that they review too much stuff right when it comes out so they have no time to digest it really. But then again, I think that comes with the job of being a (semi-?)professional reviewer. |
FromDaHood
09.09.11 | It would be pretty irrelevant to review a new release two weeks after it came out |

09.09.11 | Yeah that's exactly the problem. Hell I see it all the time, where albums will have a "3.0" review and then the reviewer comments on it with "1.5" on it lol |

09.09.11 | After awhile though the same staff keep reviewing the same genre (hint: Davey) and so even if the review is the day after release you can be relatively safe in trusting them. |

We almost always get promos from the labels, so we generally have the album a good month or so before the release date. For example, I got the new Insomnium last week and it isn't out until October.
I got contrib when they were giving it away, and lost it when they did 'the great contrib' purge. I think I got it back a week later with maybe 40 reviews. As for staff, I think Jom and Dave just wanted to piss off the other staffers with my promotion. |

09.10.11 | --I know I've read before that you guys do, but it does sometimes feel like some reviews were made after one listen, maybe to beat internal competition for the feature (or maybe not, just my own speculation)--
The mods feature albums and we know when a staff writer plans on doing a write up, so there's not really any competition. If staff is doing it, we'll wait for them until they say otherwise (unless they're really late on a big release). |

Athom
09.10.11 | I think that's one of the cool things about the site (and also a negative at the same time). On one
hand there is the staff/contributor side of things (and those aspiring for those positions) that put
out quality and informative reviews that cover a broad base of music, but on the other hand the
community aspect of a the site can be kind of off putting to those that are unfamiliar with the in-
crowd of sputnik. It's just finding a balance between cultivating good writing and putting up with the
hivemind. |
