Expecting to see the usual suspects |
BlushfulHippocrene
08.24.16 | Nostalgia. I've never been a huge fan of these, perhaps because of having to grow up watching them, but I was always at least a little impressed. |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | Hello, I'm there, my friend. It's always a pleasure to hear some talent from your country. It's always quality musicians, vocalists and it rocks and/or grooves. I'm looking forward to hearing 5 because of Ali Khan. |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | @Blush: Give it a try again, they've got some pretty cool songs in the new season. The first 2 I'd say are really good and have a harder edge
@Jethro: Always glad to share :-). Yeah I expected you to look forward to the last 2 :-D |
TheSpaceMan
08.24.16 | yes yes cool list, not enough omair in my life these days
gonna check 4 and 5, usually dont like folky stuff cuz it comes off as pansy music but I think I'm in the mood for it for whatever reason |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | Haha Space, always good to see ya around. 4 is amazing. Pakistani folk has more of a sense of mystery and anguish. |
TheSpaceMan
08.24.16 | thats awesome then, exactly what I'd want |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | 5 and 6 yeah right. What a keen voice Ali Khan has. For a moment, I thought he was the one who sat down on the floor on the video 5 but no...that guy didn't appear on 6 :) so yes.
5 is great. I like the lite progression into it and the vocal harmonies omg. On 6, vocals are also impressive, those from the lady too :) Will listen to the rest tomorrow. |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | The songs are pretty vocal heavy, since these sessions are meant to appeal to the mainstream audience. There's good experimentation music wise still |
LotusFlower
08.24.16 | 1 and 2 look good |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | Yes I see. There are a lot of room for the singers, but the music serves them well too. |
Asdfp277
08.24.16 | asking for a feature tbh |
TheSpaceMan
08.24.16 | omair 4 is so good thanks for that! |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | @Jethro: Yeah 5 has this really great mood. It never feels like 10 minutes, the vocal exchange is mind blowing. Yeah the producers have found a good balance between the vocals and the music
@Clover: Check 3 as well, catchy as fuck |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | @Asdf: Oh thanks man. I should probably add a lot more songs if that happens |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | 4 is so epic it could fit the SirLord's ''epics'' list! So intense and varied. It's easily among the best I've heard, all the seasons included. |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | Agreed Jethro. The second section of that song is fucking amazing. Muazzam Ali Khan takes the song to another level. And btw, he too is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's nephew. Brilliance is in the genes haha |
Spacesh1p
08.24.16 | Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn is such a great artist. |
TheSpaceMan
08.24.16 | cant stop listening to 4 like honestly |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | Damn right Omair. And I can see why the term 'World music'' appears into your description. And I can see where the song is taking a turn. The strings melody bring some magic to it and they announce the good things to come for the song. |
TheSpaceMan
08.24.16 | when the percussion comes in after that shift the vibe just becomes so ominous and you just know the song is going somewhere big and his vocal performance really nails the ending |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | Regah
Sal Sal ...Sal
Regah
(scuse my accent) |
TheCrocodile
08.24.16 | enjoyed last year's list quite a bit. First one is dope so far, will check the others next |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | @Space, Jethro: It's the dark and mysterious mood that I love so much. The build up instrumentation wise is gradual, and the bassline doesn't change much, but God dammit everything's still near damn perfect. The backing vocalists, the percussion, the orchestra, the funky guitar on the left channel, the brass section. And of course he kills it on the vocals.
@Jethro: Haha that sounds better than me! :-D. LOVE that part. Such a simple vocal melody, yet so memorable.
Also "Kande utteee utteeee kande utteeeee" (saxophone solo underneath) |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | @Spaceship: No doubt. RIP
@Crocodile: Wait until you get to #4 |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | Just a reminder, you can press the CC button to get English subtitles |
Mythodea
08.24.16 | First-timer here, this is pretty impressive. A breath of fresh air for me, wanted sth to challenge my ears!
I didn't quite grasp the concept. They are taking already existing songs and re-make them with more varied instruments? If yes, which song is which? |
OmairSh
08.24.16 | Yo Myth. Glad you're liking it. At times they take classic songs sung by Pakistani legends and change the instrumentation and arrangements to blend the eastern and western styles, while featuring younger singers to sing the songs.
Other times they'll take one of the singer's songs and give it a more diverse treatment.
They also have original songs just for these sessions, like #1 |
Mythodea
08.24.16 | Oh, okay, much clearer now! ;) 1 and 4 are both excellent. The rest I'm listening to right now. |
EvoHavok
08.24.16 | Cool list. Shahen-Shah is really good when it comes to Nusrat. |
Jethro42
08.24.16 | I really dig the funky groove of 1.
List is really a good bunch of songs. Thanks for sharing them.
I intend to give another listen to them all. |
OmairSh
08.25.16 | Glad you enjoyed them Jethro. Tbh I'm not surprised :-)
Yeah I was addicted to 1. Now it's 2. Don't know what I'll move onto next :-D |
Jethro42
08.25.16 | Yeah 2 is consistently good. It's reminiscent of some good Dave Matthews Band imo.
1 contains segments I don't really enjoy, but most of instrumental parts are great, also the chorus is catchy. And what an ending for the song!...
My favorite remains 4 for its second section, i can't get enough of it.
I love the vocals of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's nephew in 5 and 6, but I noticed that the vocalists all shine everywhere. It's probably the strenght of the Coke Studio sessions in general. Musicians are just as great for sure... |
PappyMason
08.25.16 | Nusrat is the man. True fact. |
porcupinetheater
08.25.16 | Oh Lawdy, 2 is tight |
Jethro42
08.25.16 | Yes it is.
My second favorite on here.
And yes, Nusrat is the man... |
smaugman
08.25.16 | ever heard turkish music?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um5fqrv9dHU |
Jethro42
08.25.16 | lol, song is way less interesting than these Pakistan stuff. Listen to 1, 2 and 4. |
smaugman
08.25.16 | hehe, just joking. my and my friend used to play that song in the background to troll while we were chat rouletting at 13 |
Jethro42
08.25.16 | Boooo! |
smaugman
08.25.16 | come on! you have to admit it's the perfect song to do so :D |
Asdfp277
08.25.16 | songs aren't downloadable, are they? |
smaugman
08.25.16 | you can convert youtube songs to mp3 files, tho the quality wont be as good i think |
Asdfp277
08.25.16 | listentoyoutube is working great as of now, but i wonder if there's any file out there with maximum quality |
smaugman
08.25.16 | iTunes got a broad variety of stuff, try there |
someguest
08.25.16 | I'm just here for the bread. |
OmairSh
08.26.16 | @Asd: they have an app where you can stream the songs. But I just listen to it on YouTube so I'm not sure about the apps quality. https://www.google.ca/search?q=coke+studio+pakistan+download&oq=cok&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j35i39j69i61j69i59j69i61j69i60.1724j0j4&client=ms-android-lge&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
Oh damn you said download. Not sure about that |
OmairSh
08.26.16 | @Jethro: 1 is so damn catchy and funky. I wish they that integrated the outro somewhere in t middle of the song tbh, but its still cool. The harmonium /guitar combination on 1 reminds me of moonsorrow a bit. Love the harmonium melody, so catchy. The second half of the song is also terrific, great fucking mood.
But yeah 4 is where its at. All about that ominous atmosphere
|
Jethro42
08.26.16 | Agreed hard with your comment, Omair. The outro of 1 must be the best part of all of them songs, if we're not including the second part of 4 :)
2 is definitely my second fave song, though.
By Moonsorrow, do you mean a song or the band? |
OmairSh
08.27.16 | Heh all about #4 eh Jethro?
Moonsorrow the band :-). Just a bit |
SitarHero
08.27.16 | Momina Mutehsan < 3 |
OmairSh
08.27.16 | She's purrrty |
Jethro42
08.27.16 | ''Heh all about #4 eh Jethro?''
It absolutely captivates me!...That constant simple, but mesmerizing beat!...
Also, near the end, the singer sings a la Nusrat (speedy mouth)...I thought only Nusrat could do that. It requires a big amount of technique no doubt!...
|
OmairSh
08.27.16 | I always love it when something musically minimalistic has a major impact.
Yeah most classical singers use that extreme vibrato technique. Some singers are better at it than others ;-) |
Flashmobba
08.29.16 | As a pakiboy gotta say this list rules, though 4 should be 1
Afreen is overrated imo |
OmairSh
03.03.17 | Dam listened to 4 again after a long time. Looks like I need to make a new list soon |
Jethro42
03.03.17 | Hell yes, 4 is epic and it nearly puts me in trance. And these guys in pyjama who clap their hands are so funny to look at. Sometime I would have to listen to entire albums. |
OmairSh
03.05.17 | Yeah Jethro the atmosphere is so damn good.
Haha yeah they definitely don't look like your typical back up singers that's for sure, but they do a damn fine job of it |
OmairSh
03.05.17 | New list is up |
