Unlocking the Truth get signed 2014-07-16 by trackbytrackreviews | 36 Comments |
Upcoming metal band Unlocking the Truth have signed a 1.7 million record deal with Sony Music.
The group, which hails from Brooklyn, consists of guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, bassist Alec Atkins, both 13 year olds, and drummer Jarad Dawkins, aged 12.
In the summer of 2013, UTT performed on a Times Square street corner for spare change. Said performance was filmed and posted on Youtube, afterwards going viral on Facebook,
getting more than 1.5 million views on the original video. The band suffered a huge surge of popularity, leading to dates on Coachella and even Warped Tour.
But Sony Music isn't stupid. The band is "only" getting $60,000 in an upfront advance for the recording of their first album, with the label expecting to recuperate it on album
sales. If their first album sells 250,000 copies, Unlocking the Truth could get upwards of$350,000 upfront for their second album. Sony Music is committed to 2 albums, which the
option to release up to 6.
As a matter of fact, the deal could get possibly get them 1.7 million dollars, assuming they actually manage to sell. If anything, the band is $60k in debt to Sony Music.
Godspeed, Unlocking the Truth.

Heard about this, good for them but they should read up a bit on what major labels practice business-wise
|
| |
Good for these kids and all, I suppose, but what's going to happen when theyre 15-16 and not 'cute' anymore still making shitty music. May be Im too negative, but I dont see much good coming out of this.
On a lighter note, I did happen to catch a little bit of their set at Coachella, and theyre having a blast with all this attention.

Still a better band than Emmure.

Yung Chugga Chugga
|
| |
lol they got a fucked contract
|
| |
That was the whole point why I wrote this article Treb, 250k copies on a metal debut, made by 8th graders and before they release the second. They're so fucked.
|
| |
Lol yeah they did get a shit contract, if they don't become an instant hit they will be in deep shit financially.
|
| |
Trvth gets signed
|
| |
I'm confused, do they need to sell 250,000 to recoup the 60K advance or just to get not be dropped and owe money?
|
| |
Hopefully they write some catchy tunes.
|
| |
They need to sell 250k copies of their debut to get any money for their second album.
|
| |
these dude bring the breakdowns.
|
| |
I'm rooting for these kids but that is ridiculous. A debut album metal album to sell 250,000. Sony took advantage of the fact they were kids and really put them in a shit spot.
|
| |
@Deva I highly doubt these kids were persuaded without parental consent - sony might actually have faith in these kids, as i'm sure their parents/guardians do.
|
| |
250k is an absolutely ridiculous number, wtf is wrong with them?
|
| |
Verbing the Noun
|
| |
They got shafted by Sony. That was the point of the article.
|
| |
Lol Sony's such a tool. These kids know no better, they're screwed. Would've been better to just stay DIY. I heard they were making like $1200 a day on the street, they'd be better doing that.
|
| |
I don't even believe Metallica now can sell that much
|
| |
"so what? being this young and getting 60k is amazing."
They don't get to use it dude, it's for studio costs
|
| |
Would've been better to just stay DIY
stay DIY? did they make their own instruments or something?
|
| |
Since they are kids they will probably use all 60K on the first album.
|
| |
literally everything that's wrong with the heavy music industry
|
| |
music industry is so crazy nowadays. making kids doing such things
|
| |
Awful band name for sure.
|
| |
This is why contract law should be taught in elementary school just like how condensation works and why there is no such thing as subtraction, just the addition of negative numbers.
|
| |
Haha never heard about these guys. That clip is pretty solid considering they're 12 and 13 years old.
|
| |
Oh man. LOL they're so fucked
|
| |
an advance is an advance, they don't owe the label back. Sony expecting to recoup the 60k doesn't mean they won't see a penny until they do that. They still have publishing rights, they aren't in debt to anyone quite yet.
|
| |
"Sony expecting to recoup the 60k doesn't mean they won't see a penny until they do that."
Give it another shot, bro
|
| |
And man it's Sony, how much money would you expect these kids to be in for while Sony doesn't get
their money back?
|
| |
The kids don't understand how messed up of a contract that is. Blame their dumb parents.

These guys are such a novelty, they may sell 250,000k ... I mean look at Babymetal
|

Nice article there
Yeah well i say and i repeat, the kids are fucked. Like someone said before itt, in 5-6 they will be the typical age of a new Metalcore/modern metal band ever made and probably even well before that they will be drowning in debt and have only a few people listening to them. I mean what are the odds that they become the next big thing? The kids played Chelsea Grin etc on the streets k, does that mean they can be successful as a band? Right

Is it me or does every member of this band look like an anime's interpretation of what an African American looks like?
