Showcasing a preference for the alto sax he pioneered the free & avant-garde jazz movement of the '60s. In 2012, his groundbreaking release The Shape of Jazz to Come was added by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry. He died on June 11, 2015, in Manhattan.
