New Drones album in March

2016-01-18 by dimsim3478 | 11 Comments
Australian alternative rockers The Drones have just premiered a new video for a single entitled "To Think That I Once Loved You" on The Guardian, accompanied by the announcement of their seventh studio album. Entitled Feelin Kinda Free, the record is set to be released on March 18 through the band's new label Tropical Fuck Storm. Pre-orders for the CD and vinyl have already gone live. Frontman Gareth Liddiard drew comparisons between the new single--which features fellow Melbourne alternative band Harmony--and artists like Einstürzende Neubauten and GZA, as "To Think That I Once Loved You" is representative of a stylistic departure from previous Drones material on Feelin Kinda Free:

"We went 'fuck it' and went spaz. It's a pretty weird record and you can dance to it. It's time to have a groovy Drones record. We're sick of being a bunch of drags." -- October 23, 2015

The new album follows a huge year for The Drones who re-released their entire back catalogue in 2015 after the band reacquired the rights to all their previous records. In addition to a national tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of their breakthrough album Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By, the band played through a series of dates in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK, including the Le Guess Who? festival as part of a huge lineup including Deerhunter, Titus Andronicus and Julia Holter. 2015 also saw the release of the first single from Feelin Kinda Free, "Taman Shud", which caused a mild stir with controversial conservative columnist Andrew Bolt who flamed The Drones in a post responding to their criticism of him in the song. Finally, Liddiard joined Courtney Barnett, Jen Cloher and Adalita at the Melbourne Festival for two high-demand performances of Patti Smith's Horses album in its entirety.

As 2016 begins without a let-up in the band's momentum, Liddiard said the following of Feelin Kinda Free:

"The record is really out there. We've recorded some pretty whacked out shit in the past but certain annoying factors have always gotten in the way of us going full throttle, in that respect. I think the fans who go for that whole guitar-and-songwriting schtick might get a shock."

"Maybe not, I don't know. But the people who like us for our weirdness and who know what we personally get into will think we've finally done what we were supposed to do."

jam I See Seaweed ASAP; it's a good introduction to the band and is less weird but 100% Drones nonetheless. or Wait Long By the River cuz the opener is regarded as one of the greatest Australian songs of all time.
