New Pillows in FLCL trailers 2018-03-27 by dimsim3478 | 10 Comments | Two years after their first announcement, the sequels to the cult Japanese anime series FLCL are finally set to air in the US in June and September of this year! The return of FLCL is inevitably accompanied by brand new material from Japanese alternative rock legends The Pillows, who will provide the soundtrack for the entirety of both new seasons, just as they did for the original FLCL series.
Two separate trailers were released to announce the US airdates and Japanese theatrical premiere dates, and both feature clips of two new Pillows tracks which will act as the theme songs for the sequels. "Spiky Seeds", which was first glimpsed in the Anime Expo 2017 teaser trailer, will be the theme song for FLCL: Progressive, the first new season; while "Star Overhead" makes its debut in the trailers as the theme song for FLCL: Alternative, the second new season.
The Pillows previously stated at a live show in October of last year that they had finished recording for the FLCL soundtrack, and that it will consist of 14 songs, although only some of the songs will be new. It is currently unclear whether this means that the soundtrack will contain re-recordings of old songs from the band's back catalogue, or simply the same recordings as those included on the band's previous records.
The trailers also offer fuel for speculation that the soundtrack will be limited to material from The Pillows' King Records/Delicious Label catalogue, which includes all of the band's material from 1994 to 2006, and 2016 to the present. The US trailer includes an easter egg from an upcoming episode showing one of the characters listening to The Pillows on their smartphone, but the album covers depicted are only of The Pillows' King Records albums. This potentially indicates that the producers of FLCL did not seek the rights to utilise either visual images or music belonging to Avex Trax, who The Pillows released six albums and twelve singles with between 2007 and 2014. The Pillows left King Records for Avex Trax in 2006, but after their contract with Avex Trax was not renewed, The Pillows went independent in 2016 by inking a unique deal with frontman Sawao Yamanaka's Delicious Label that included distribution with King Records.
In addition to the airing of the FLCL sequels and the expected CD/digital release of the band's soundtrack for the show, The Pillows are currently recording their 22nd studio album, less than a year after releasing their last album Nook in the Brain and two more non-album CD singles in 2017. Yamanaka stated in the band's fan-club magazine (rough translation):
"I have strong feelings that the next album may become the last album. That probably isn't so, but I am recording with those feelings so that I can make an album without having any regrets. Until the 30th anniversary in September next year, I will give it my all and burn myself out!"
In addition to the new album, The Pillows are also demoing another non-album single (most likely for release during their upcoming Return to Third Movement Vol. 2 tour, on which they will be playing their classic albums Runners High and Happy Bivouac back-to-back in full each night), and are set to provide the theme song for an upcoming movie. Vinyl reissues of their albums Runners High and Happy Bivouac are also expected to coincide with the Return to Third Movement Vol. 2 tour in May, as vinyl reissues of Please Mr.Lostman and Little Busters previously accompanied the Return to Third Movement Vol. 1 tour last year.
Yamanaka said on his radio show in early 2017 that The Pillows are intending to return to the US for another tour in 2018 or roughly after the new FLCL series has aired, as the show is responsible for much of their notoriety outside of Japan. The band have not played a show internationally since 2011 when they last toured the US with all-girl Delicious Label act Noodles. The Pillows will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of their formation next year; the anniversary will likely involve several celebratory retrospective concerts and releases, which the band has done for their 20th and 25th anniversaries.

Cant believe im living in a reality where FLCL is coming back.
It's a wonderful timeline.
Also I know people are always saying "FLCL IS A FUCKING COMPLETE STORY DON'T TAMPER WITH PERFECTION" but I remember when I first watched it six years ago, I wanted a continuation more than anything. Although I guess it's good that we're getting all-new characters cuz it's hard to argue that Naota's story wasn't pretty much complete. Anyway FLCL coming back after so long with what seems like a less subversive style than the first time perhaps warrants comparison to the Trainspotting sequel, and I have a feeling that I'll be just as satisfied with FLCL 2&3 as I was with T2 (i.e. quite satisfied, even if it doesn't live up to the amazing thrill of the original).
| | | Good shit, good shit. I'm not expecting the new sequels to be as amazing as the original but I'm still probably going to enjoy them regardless. Plus I can't argue with getting new Pillows music.

| | | Never could get into this show but good news for everyone else I guess. And I'm always on board for more Pillows.
