The Pillows return to the US

2018-05-30 by dimsim3478 | 14 Comments
For the first time in 7 years, Japanese alternative rock veterans The Pillows will be touring the US! Sponsored by Adult Swim, the Mono Me You Sun Tour will begin on July 10, and will span over seven dates in six cities. The support acts for the tour will be fellow Delicious Label band Noodles, and Sub Pop's Cullen Omori from Chicago.

Dates and tickets:

The tour will coincide with the airing of the long-awaited anime series FLCL Progressive on Adult Swim, with the first episode premiering on June 2. New songs and new recordings of old songs from The Pillows will be featured as part of the soundtrack of FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative (airing in September), both of which are sequels to the 2000 anime cult hit FLCL. The original FLCL featured a soundtrack consisting almost entirely of songs from The Pillows' catalogue. In contrast, Progressive and Alternative will utilise much less of The Pillows' music, instead opting for a score that will be primarily composed by R・O・N of the music production company VERYGOO. Adult Swim previously aired the first episode of Alternative as an unannounced surprise on April 1 (April Fools Day), and showed the first episode of Progressive at the conventions C2E2 and Momocon.

Fans of The Pillows are strongly advised to attend these concerts, as they could very well be the band's last shows outside of Japan. Frontman Sawao Yamanaka has discussed the possibility of breaking up The Pillows in the near future, with their upcoming 22nd studio album (which they have almost finished recording) being their last. From the band's official fanclub magazine (rough translation):

"I have strong feelings that the next album may become the last album. That probably isn't so, but I am recording with those feelings so that I can make an album without having any regrets. Until the 30th anniversary in September next year, I will give it my all and burn myself out!"

The Pillows are currently on the Return to Third Movement Vol. 2 tour in Japan, with a setlist consisting of every song from their classic albums Runners High and Happy Bivouac; for the tour, the band released both albums on vinyl for the first time. They have confirmed that they will embark on a third Return to Third Movement tour, which will likely see them performing the albums Smile and Thank You, My Twilight in their entirety (with vinyl reissues of both those albums also being expected). The band has also stated that they will tour their 22nd studio album after completing Return to Third Movement Vol. 3.

The Pillows celebrate their 30th anniversary next year, which they have announced will be "big". Although they have ruled out the possibility of another performance at the legendary Nippon Budokan arena (where they performed on their 20th anniversary), the anniversary celebration is expected to consist of multiple large concerts and retrospective releases.

i unno man, regardless of what you think of the records, i'm pretty sure their live show is still pretty kick ass. in fact, i think they've gotten waaaay better as players over the years, judging from the live DVDs at least. and i don't think they're gonna be playing that much new stuff; they know the american audiences love that FLCL soundtrack.
Super stoked for FLCL.

i'm pretty disappointed about the serious lack of pillows songs in comparison to the original series where pillows songs were in almost every scene, and alternative episode 1 was also kinda weak, but progressive looks fucking awesome and i heard from someone who watched ep 1 at momocon that it's pretty good so fuck yeaaaaaaaaaa

Holy crap, MA, NY and LA all sold out in one day. And the actual tour dates were only officially announced three hours ago (although tickets were already being sold about 24 hours ago)! It's been confirmed that both the MA and LA shows will be getting bumped up to bigger venues; hopefully there'll also be a NY venue switch for those who missed out on tix.

First tour outside of Japan in 7 years, and relatively little promotion for this one.

Yep. People have really been waitin' for The Pillows to come back, and the new FLCL has probably got everyone hyped up too. Anyway, the MA show was moved to a bigger venue and they're selling more tickets for that now. LA is also being moved so more tix for that show soon. Dunno about NY yet.

San Fran and Portland have sold out. So far, there hasn't been any confirmation that NY, SF and OR shows are getting upgraded to bigger venues, but a tweet has come out from @FLCL_USA saying that they are in the process of booking bigger venues (presumably for at least one of the sold out shows other than LA), so stay tuned.

The Cambridge MA date sold out right away, got upgraded to a bigger venue in Boston, and now that bigger venue is sold out! The only date that hasn't sold out the original venue is Seattle.
