Two new Ulver songs

2024-05-31 by Raul Stanciu STAFF | 27 Comments
Ulver released two more tracks, "Nocturne #1" and "Forgive Us", which features fellow Norwegian jazz trompeter Nils Petter Molvaer.

In the band's own words, "this time we’re gonna keep dropping tracks till it becomes an album. It’s a backwards way, with no pre-order, promo people or anything, but that’s how we wanna roll. Quite liberating in these twilight years. We’ve made enough albums the conventional way, and the kids don’t care about that anyway. So feel free to spread it on the Tik Tok or what have you. Ultimately, you keep this old boat afloat through your conscious/subconscious acts of listening and whispering our name".

Listen to "Forgive Us" and "Nocturne #1" below:

Ending of Forgive Us was nice.

First half is still in their Ass-Flowers style.

Good, but my least fave Ulver period. And the more they do in that style, the less interested I am because there already is a lot of it out there.

Nocturne #1 is quite nice!

New Ulver is always a good thing. "Forgive Us" was promising, kinda harkens back to the Perdition City trip-hop sound, but more lighthearted. I dig it. "Nocturne #1" lost me a bit. I was hoping for something more akin to Forgive Us, less through composed ambient. Maybe in the context of an album it will make more sense, but as is it's a fine track.

"this time we’re gonna keep dropping tracks till it becomes an album. It’s a backwards way, with no pre-order, promo people or anything, but that’s how we wanna roll."

Don't know if Garm got the memo, but this is becoming the more effective way of releasing music in these modern times.

Good stuff unsurprisingly, both have great strengths for me, but I'll probably wait for the full album to drop

Ulver used to be that one band that was always reinventing itself between albums. Even if I didn’t particularly gel with one of the styles they aimed for, it was always something new. Their last two albums and that ep they dropped all sound the same to me tho, and that sound while fresh and enjoyable on Assassination, got progressively worse as they went. Their last album is only 8 tracks but it felt like a chore to get through. I really really hope this sees them being more experimental again

You have a good point Gyro. Ulver from black metal, to Perdition City, to Shadows of the Sun, to Assassination, and everything in between it was always a feeling of, what creative sound will Ulver think of next. Both of these songs sound really great, excellent performances, wonderful production, but they feel stagnant. New Ulver is better than no Ulver, but I don't believe Garm and crew are incapable of producing something fresh in the future.

Live albums are arguably where current Ulver shines the most (ATGCLVLSSCAP, Drone Activity, Hexahedron, Grieghallen).

I think they are on the right track with these two songs though. Nocturne 1 especially, but the second half of Forgive Us is really nice too

Man, forgive us is maybe the best song they've done of this style before. I agree with the shout that it harkens back to perdition city in a great way. I get if this isn't your taste but if the music still slaps I'm ok with them finding their comfort zone.

holy shit Nils and Ulver? hell fucking yes.

also:

"We’ve made enough albums the conventional way, and the kids don’t care about that anyway."

this used to be so common-place for mainstream pop but now even Ulver fans cant be arsed to consume an entire album worth of material, makes me wonder if we will be seeing less and less full albums in the future :C
