The Shape of Post-Metal to Come

2024-10-01 by DatsNotDaMetulz | 24 Comments
Swedish post-metal group Cult of Luna have released their cover of "Tannhäuser/Derivè" by fellow Umeå natives Refused.

The song, the penultimate track of Refused's 1998 magnum opus The Shape of Punk to Come, has been covered as part of a tribute album released to mark the beginning of Refused's farewell tour, which is set to conclude in 2025 after originally being delayed by frontman Dennis Lyxzén's heart attack in June this year. The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated will be released on 8 November by Epitaph Records.

Track list:
1. GEL – Worms Of The Senses / Faculties Of The Skull
2. Quicksand – The Liberation Frequency
3. Brutus – The Deadly Rhythm
4. Snapcase – Summer Holidays Vs. Punkroutine
5. IDLES – New Noise (remix)
6. Ho99o9 – New Noise
7. Fucked Up – Refused Party Program
8. ZULU – Protest Song '68
9. Cold Cave – Refused Are Fucking Dead
10. IGORR – The Shape Of Punk To Come
11. Cult Of Luna – Tannhäuser / Derive
12. Touché Amoré – The Apollo Programme Was A Hoax

What a weird lineup. A bunch of post-hardcore-ish stuff, a couple noisy industrial jawns, and then Cult of Luna lmao

@Thycross

Don’t see how that’s weird; both bands are from the Umea hardcore scene, and even when CoL took a different path, they still maintained ‘core’ elements. That track is a perfect fit for them, too. It’s like saying ISIS covering The Melvins was weird.

IGORRR is on the setlist. I can't even begin to predict what that's going to sound like, and that excites me.

I'm actually not sure if I ever heard the original tSoPtC to the end to hear Tannhauser / Derive in full. That said, I know the first 7 tracks pretty well. Anyways, Cult of Luna are at their top game here. Can't wait to hear the other pieces (IGORRR hell yeah).

Most tribute albums suck but this might be cool. And yeah, they should've stayed a touring act at most or cooked on a new album for a few years after reuniting because Freedom and War Music were underwhelming at best

@kkarron

Ya! They actually released a new album a few years back (thought 2023, but it was 2021) and it's great!

Gotta respect how these guys built a decade-spanning career based on one good record.
