Review Summary: A great album surging from a more serious Bon Iver like tragedy This is a great album. "Hospice" makes" For Emma, Forever Ago" look like it was written by a whining bitch. Musically it's soft, partially electronic and absolutely riveting for long portions. The story is this, Peter Silberman locked himself away in his apartment after his lover (girlfriend I think) had finally passed away from cancer after a prolonged time. The album paints a chilling, dark sense of grief and impossible heartache. I mean, pain seeps through all over.
The lyrics suggest honesty from a mourning soul. The vocals are reminiscent of a quietened Noel Sharky of the Undertones. It's brutal and beautiful. I mean this is uncomfortable at times, times when it seems unbearable for Silberman.
Prologue is eerie and powerful. Kettering is soulful, haunting and moving. This one reveals the story. The vocals hit hard first time round and almost continue to each time afterwards. Sylvia is an emphatic tribute thats very endearing and possibly my favourite on the record. Great song. Wake also is full of all these qualities but is the more of a journey at 8mins 44secs and is almost religious in it's delivery.
There's also some lighter more uplifting moments like Bear and Two.
It's a downer, it's depressing but that's Hospice's strong point. It is just so emotional that you possibly don't want to listen again because it's so overpowering for alot of the time. It's weakness is that there is no single song that would rocket this to massive fame, but so what. Also I can imagine myself listening to this five times and that's it. The reason being it's literally uncomfortable to listen to at times, but then again that's the attraction.

I'm not going to lie..all I got out of this review is that its depressing and songs like Bear and
Two are the only uplifting tracks.
Your middle paragraph could probably be split into 3 or 4 paragraphs if you added some much needed
insight.
I noticed you have three reviews already, space out your writing time, I've been on this site for
almost a year and only have 13 reviews. Thats nothing compared to others on here, but seriously
don't write 4341390439 reviews a day or they will all be crap.

You need to actually refer to the music. The review is a bit too conversational in style without being unique or quirky enough to make for an enjoyable or informative read; we get that the album is emotionally heavy, but how's that achieved?
Also, opening a review with This is a great album is hardly dynamite. J/s.
It's a start because you clearly have a good grasp of language but as far as this being a music review it's not very helpful at all.

i don't think you have a good grasp of language. stop saying "I mean", notice the difference between "there is" and "there are", "it's" and "its", and really think through what you are writing. Sentences like "the lyrics suggest honesty from a mourning soul" don't really make sense. When you say "the album paints a chilling, dark sense of grief and impossible heartache" there is some nice imagery but it doesn't really make sense. The album paints a what where?
anyone can read a dictionary and memorize heavy words but (almost like music) it's the spacing and relationship (meaning!) between them that counts

You should probably stop attempting to write reviews.

Review is awful, album is certainly not.

Wow, some stupid reactions here. This is far from deserving all those negs, 'cause this isn't badly written at all - it's just short and undetailed. That said, while you describe the sound well enough, you just don't say enough for this to qualify as a review in the analytic sense of the term. If you just put in more effort and practice I think you could write some really good stuff.

you're probably right streetlight, he should definitely work on a more engaging introduction though, first 2 sentences kind of ruined it for me

Nah, I don't need a Sputnik staff reviewer to tell me this review doesn't suck, cause it does
