Review Summary: Slightly generic, Emo lyrics, and breakdowns. Approach with caution.
"Oh, goody!! Another Metalcore band that scene kids can "Hardcore Dance" to. Just what the world needed!" - Words of a Metal Elitist
While Corpus Christi are by no means groundbreaking, original, or innovative, they at least know how to play their instruments. The only problem I have is with their vocalist. Don't misunderstand me, he definitely has his moments of "Holy crap! What a voice!", but they only come during the clean-vocal moments. To put it bluntly, I think they need to do what Scar Symmetry is now doing, which is having a screaming/growling vocalist and a singing vocalist.
The guitars are normally simple, but can put some definitely necessary melody to the songs. The best and most memorable guitar riffs belong to "It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn" and "The Sacrifice", which would easily be the best songs on the album,.... If not for the wildly Emo lyrics. Here's the chorus for "It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn"
"The taste of cold steel on my lips, the rope around my neck,
These bitter pills and razor blades, seal my fate."
Maybe that Metal Elitist was right. They pretty much are just like any other Metalcore band, except with worse screams than most. Except, guitar solos, while short in length, are sprinkled throughout, whereas most Metalcore bands replace them with mindless breakdowns *cough* Emmure *cough, cough*. You know who you are.
In summary, this IS generic, and should only be picked up by Metalcore fanatics. However, if you are completely new to the genre, I wouldn't recommend this until you listen to better bands, and then decide whether or not you should even consider purchasing this record.
If you have heard good things and are thinking about buying this, listen to "It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn" (In my opinion, the best track), and then listen to "Marilyn" (My least favorite) in order to compare the best and worst ends of the spectrum of this album.
