This is my second review

OK first of all, i know that there are already 4 reviews for this cd but i am writing this becasue i have a completely different opinion of this album. As you probably know, this is thrice's 4th full length album, and was expected to much different then their other realeases.I have been looking forward to this for weeks becasue i was expecting to hear a great album with some new twists. However, i was dissapointed on my first listen. I have listened to this several times since then, and i still cant get into it. I generally dont like bands like thrice, but what got me into them was the catchy songs, awesome riffs and good lead guitar. This album almost completely lacks those three things. Im not going to do a track by track review on this, im just going to try to explain a few of the songs, the weak points, and the strong points.

The opening track, Image of the invisible is one of the only songs on here that i enjoy listening to. It has a good catchy chorus. After that comes a few songs that really dont intrigue me: between the end and where we lie, the earth will shake, and atlantic. I admit, atlantic is a nice slower song, but i quickly got sick of it. For miles is comes next, and it isnt a bad track, it just... isnt anything special. Thats how i think of the album as a whole; mediocre. It seems like they wanted to improve their sound, so they said "hey lets add some piano intros to every song and take away teppei's lead guitar riffs". I have nothing against piano in rock music(i play piano myself), but really, adding a cheesy piano intro to half the songs on the album didnt really improve anything. This album is really bland overall and though i dont mind listening to it, i wouldnt pick it over any other thrice album.

I know this review was really short, but i dont have much to say about this album...it just mediocre

pros: .some interesting new sounds

cons: .The new sound gets boring
. Almost no good lead guitar riffing
. bland

Gotta go with sv on this one. It's always good to hear different views about a record, but you could go a bit more into detail why you don't like it.

Still, good work so far :thumb:

I like the album just not as much as the other ones. The review could use another paragraph or two then it'd be pretty top-notch This Message Edited On 10.22.05

This review is really insufficient. I understand why you would dislike the album but I also understad why you have no authority on the subject of whether or not the album is actually good. "[C]atchy songs, awesome riffs, and good lead guitar" is a pretty simple take on what made Thrice's previous albums especially since the two latter points you pride Thrice on are pretty much the same.

dude, no one has authority on the subject of wether or not the album is good. Its all opinion. Also, iwasnt saying that catchy songs etc is what made thrices' previous albums. I was saying that that is what attracted ME to them when i normally dont like the genre. Also, riffs and lead guitar arent necessarily the same by any means. Riffs are often played as rythem while lead guitar is soloing over them .

I should have included some more detail to make my points clearer though, i agree with you there

Riffs are a subset of lead guitar. Many riffs happen to be low pitched and rhythmic and mostly exist in classic rock. They can also be subsets of rhythm guitar but are also undeniably lead. Also, with a band like Thrice where both guitars often are soloing/riffing/playing something that doesn't fitting into the vernacular of typical rock music, lead and rhythm guitar are often interwoven. However, I mentioned the two being that same because after reading your review I didn't believe you really could discern any difference between the two.

Also, some people do have authority on whether or not albums are good. They're called critics. Some critics are more astute ro intelligent than others and you can agree with their opinion all you want. It isn't fact but when you have somebody who is educated and produces an interesting and solidly backed up opinion on the subject, they sure are more of an authority than somebody like you who happened to churn out a half-baked review on an album I feel you don't understand at all.

Take a look at Dfelon's insanely in depth review, the difference between it and this review is staggering in a number of ways. First not only does he offer his own opinion on the album throughout the whole thing but he also covers what it sounds like as well and by the end of the review you know, more or less, if it will appeal to you. Another difference is the depth of knowledge of subject that he reveals in his review that tells the reader that he really knows what he is talking about.

Nicetoknowyou, you might actually have the knowledge to back everything you have said up but you just don't display it in your review which makes it rather weak against the other reviews.

Yeah, each of those reviews containing a score of 4.5 or up. What you can get from that is that it is a heavilly defended album which would require a strong countercase to push your point. Seeing that your review is even shorter than a standard review leaves us to question the validity of your points/strength of your case.

If I wasn't at work wasting time, I'd feel like I had wasted my time by reading this review...

I agree with most of what was already said... if you're going to offer the counter-view to a bunch of well-written and thought out reviews then you need to make yours as well written and thought out as possible or you lose before you've started.

Whut a gr8 ritten review...see that was me giving an opposing, but inept response to the majority of the other opinions. Which is exactly what you did.

This review sucks but it was written a long time ago when standards were much lower on this site so it's pretty pointless criticising. Some staff have reviews this bad in their early days.

I'm going to have to actually write a review about this album that defends this viewpoint, because I actually share it. I understand what you're trying to say, but sadly, not very many other people are going to. I'll have to do that at some point.

If there was ever an example of two styles clashing, Vheissu would be it. Some of the songs I quite like here, but some are just boring. Thankfully, Thrice actually did their homework on how to create atmosphere on Vol 2 of The Alchemy Index (see: night diving).

Poor review, at any rate.

lol... I'm sitting very close to a 5, There are certain songs though like "atlantic", well good, it gets a little boring, and "lullaby" isn't anything amazing either. Everything else just seems flawless. I don't think the alchemy index has much on this. I'm wondering what their next album will sound like, I really hope it's something like this.

i pretty much jizz to every single song on here. the only one i haven't always liked is image of the invisible but that's grown on me too. the earth will shake, for miles, like moths to flame and stand and feel your worth are complete mind sex for me.

also wtf is lullaby
