Review Summary: boring weather, isn't it?
By the looks of the album cover, this should be something epic. I mean for crying out loud, the album art is a picture of an ice sculpture, an ice sculpture that is in the shape of the band’s already bizarre title, !!!. So this album is going to be cool, cool because of its insanity - yes, I’m definitely going to love this. I can’t explain to you just how awesome it is that this band named themselves !!!, it’s just so clever. For those who buy LPs impulsively without knowing what certain albums sound like, this is the ultimate consumer’s trap. If you expect anything special from this LP at all, prepare to be disappointed. The album is not as incredible or even as unique as they make it out to be.
Before listening to this album, you must ask yourself a simple question: do you like elevator music? You know, the kind that is barely audible and for good reason. Elevator music is hated by all because it is blatantly forgettable, about as forgettable as the taste of air if you could consume it. In a similar fashion, trying to find substance in this album is like attempting to grab hold of air itself, which is quite impossible. The premise of attempting such an action is exciting at first, but once known that it is unachievable, all hope is lost. Or in other words, why bother with an album that doesn't stick in memory, and is also void of substance? I can't imagine why anyone would want to listen to it.
Strange Weather, Isn’t it? does not sound like it should have been released in 2010. Everyone knows that disco has been dead for a very long time, well, everyone except !!!. You heard correctly, Strange Weather, Isn’t It? encompasses the long dead genre of disco. The album is stuffed to the gills with groovy basslines, tasty vocals, trippy guitars, dreamy keys, and quirky synthesizers. Depending on if you like that kind of thing, you may actually find something to enjoy here. However, the problem is that the music is too tasteful, and consequently tame. This is feel good music, the relaxing sort with breathy vocals and the like. It’s certainly good background music, but considering the loud punch of the band’s title, !!!, the sad irony is that the music itself will never be as good as the title. Oh well.
